To ask the simplest way to wash your kitchen floor?

I'm really struggling with the kitchen floor.
If I hoover it, it doesn't pick up areas around the edges, sweeping it leaves stubborn bits, if I mop it with bleach it's wet and sticky, if I use floor wipes it takes ages, there must be a simple way.

Please be kind this is my first time living away from parents and I have mastered the rest of the housework, I just want to know the easiest way to clean the kitchen floor.
My mum would scrub every inch and then dry it and polish it etc but I don't have that sort of time, I just need to do in 10 minutes to fit into my cleaning routine.

This is the floor.

Steam mop with plain water or maybe a few drops of lemon juice in the water.

I was replying to a pp who said they had read that steam mops are for finishing touches after mopping !

I do a quick vacuum then one steam mop. I do floors twice a week and they never look bad even with 2 dogs and 2 cats.

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 08/05/2024 11:35

I use Method Floor Cleaner, but don't use it neat, I dilute it in the bottle of one of those microfibre mops that spray the floor. Mop every few days or so. Every now and then I get a bucket of hot water with a squirt of floor cleaner and properly scrub the floor with a brush, but that's only a couple of times a year.

If I'm hoovering downstairs I do the kitchen as well.

For about 4 years in my teens I worked in a commercial kitchen and thing the manager got an absolute bee in her bonnet about was making sure the floor was clean. We worked late and would often be finished at gone 11, and there was times I'd be home in bed and she'd ring each of us to go back and do the floor again because she wasn't happy with it. Admittedly it did get really greasy with the big friers and high humidity. We soon learnt!! Good old fashioned metal mop bucket, inch of bleach and then boiling water. String mop head changed as soon as it starts leaving strands behind on the floor. But i totally accept that was industrial flooring so bleach might not be as suitable for domestic floors.

Teamarugula · 08/05/2024 12:26

I hoover, using the nozzle for the edges, then use a spray mop with a little drop of floor cleaner. My house is a bleach-free zone.

BertieBotts · 08/05/2024 12:28

My main problem with bleach is that it ruins clothes. Our bathroom towels and bath mats are all splotchy because DH splashes it about in there without being careful about it. I wouldn't use it on floors because I know someone would walk on it and then make bleached footprints in other rooms.

I make sure I'm wearing my gardening clothes if I use bleach (or Cillit Bang which is basically bleach in spray form).

I do think that straightforward detergent and warm/hot water is a better choice than bleach unless you actually need bleach's specific powers of germ killing or stain removal.

Most floors aren't carrying dangerous germs, just dirt which you can remove with detergent and varying degrees of elbow grease. Bleach won't magically make dirt disappear, it'll just make it lighter.

PinotDragon · 08/05/2024 18:09

Chef here, used to mopping floors.
Use boiling water, a small squeeze washing up liquid (fabulous degreaser).
Once you've hoovered and used the hose attachment to get in all the nooks and crannies then mop, using a mop bucket that you can wring out. If it's super dirty don't wring it and wet mop, then squeeze all the water out the mop head and damp mop up the water. If it isn't scummy just Use a damp mop all over. Do it before you head out or go to bed and then you can let it dry without stepping on it.

Rubyupbeat · 08/05/2024 18:36

Twice a week I do a hot, flash liquid wash with a mop and bucket, and the other days I use a spray mop. I always hoover before and use the nozzle for corners.
I must admit, before I had dogs I hardly washed the kitchen floor.

Rubyupbeat · 08/05/2024 18:42

This is the mop system I have used for years, stops the floor getting too wet and the foot pedal is easier than by hand.

Marry a cleaner. Then he does it 😉

IoWfairy · 08/05/2024 18:51

For my first encounter with my own floor, I'd get on my knees and use a floor cloth and a bucket of diluted Flash. Otherwise I'd go with vacuum then flat mop.
Good luck!

Washing up liquid makes the floor sticky IME.

I find the best thing is either a dedicated floor cleaner which you can buy, diluted to the instructions on the bottle, or I just use a multipurpose surface cleaner spray and spray this in front of my steam mop which I use with water only. These combinations seem to work and not cause stickiness. Use as hot water as you can - from the kettle is fine.

I would sweep or hoover first, because it's annoying to be scraping little bits around.

I think another potential cause of stickiness might be if your floor was very dirty to start out with and you've sort of diluted the grease and spread it all around. It could be worth cleaning twice, to see if this helps.

If washing up liquid makes your floor sticky, you're using too much liquid.

Nannyfannybanny · 08/05/2024 21:45

My first H had his own cleaning company,he never did any at home! I see there are a few of us who actually vacuum! I now tell people I shark or Dyson my floors.

agncndmkd128494 · 08/05/2024 22:24

I hoover (nozzle attachment for the edges if needed), then steam mop. I have a dog so have to hoover but just for a few crumbs a floor brush/dustpan and brush might do instead. Occasionally I'll give it a proper "old fashioned " clean on hands and knees with a sponge and bucket of floor cleaner

WonderingWanda · 08/05/2024 22:29

Use the hottest water you can - I usually use hot tap water and boild the kettle to top it up. No need for bleach, just a general floor cleaner, not too much and a squirt of disinfectant if you have a pet or people wear shoes inside etc. Wring out your mop. The really hot water will help lift the dirt and make it dry quickly.

TicTac80 · 08/05/2024 22:48

The robovac hoovers the floor (every day as I have two DC and four cats) then I use steam cleaner on it 1-2 times a week. I’ve got a tiny kitchen and it has quarry tiles.

The steam cleaner (an old Vax one) is great as it has different attachments (mop section, detachable section with scrapers, brushes etc) and makes things v easy and quick. It also has an additional tank for detergent. it took me ten minutes to steam clean the floor and for it to dry this evening (I should do this each day really).

justasking111 · 08/05/2024 22:56

I have a long handled brush and dustpan set. The brush gets into corners, then I run the hoover over it. It's good for cobwebs too

Ferngardens · 08/05/2024 23:11

Spray mop with a bit of all purpose mixed with water. The problem with bleach and steam mops is sometimes they can cause damage and it looks worse then. Otherwise a robot mop, I love mine!

newnamethanks · 09/05/2024 00:14

Steam mop OP, it's the only way. No floor cleaners, no bleach, just steam. Cleans and sterilises. Hoover first. Don't put tap water in it. They are wonderful and it will take less time than all the other faffing.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 09/05/2024 13:53

If the floor is Vinyl of any type, as it appears to be, I was advised not to use a steam cleaner as they heat can damage the adhesive and loosen the floor
Mine was heat welded, but still not advertised.
I dyson mine and use well diluted flash or similar in a spray mop

uncomfortablydumb53 · 09/05/2024 13:56

For anti slip textured flooring which mine is I use a rubber broom

NewNan21 · 10/05/2024 18:38

White vinegar spray from Robert Dyaus or Clinell spray from Amazon, both drys quickly
