What do you think?

I guess you have otherwise you wouldn't have been on a page that was for that specific purpose.

So then.

pointythings · 06/05/2024 12:22

@Allergictoironing and you are the kind of Tory voter the party have now lost - centrist, moderate and a decent human being. And there are far more of you than there are of the right wing headbangers.

That is the big problem the Tories have, and they are delusional if they think lurching ever further to the right will solve it. Coalition after the next GE? By all means let them keep going on about it, it will motivate the GTTO brigade to go out and vote, but basically hahahahahahahaha.... No.

Define "democracy" first.

A really good way to waste everyone time - and stir up a lot of emotions - is to have a debate over something which means different things to different people.

"Democracy" is a great example. What does it even mean ?

Good point - what does it even mean ??

A large % of the electorate have (stayed at home and) not voted in recent elections.

What does that mean?

IMO it shows they are not engaging with the election process.

What it says about their opinions about 'democracy' is another question.

Turnout was 40.5 per cent in the London Mayoral election, down from 42.2 per cent in 2021, and 45.3 per cent in 2016.

So it appears that 59.5% didn't want Khan as Mayor again or they just didn't care.

IsoldeWagner · 06/05/2024 14:01

They didn't care. Voting is optional, a lot of people can't be bothered.

In that case then they can't moan about what they get.

I have always gone to vote even if it mean writing across my ballot paper " none of these eejits".

(BTW if you do choose to spoil your ballot paper. that make sure none of your writing goes anywhere near a box, otherwise they could count it as a vote !!)

You’re right but I am saddened that the Tories think being rabidly right wing would win them more votes. Do they think that little of us? Because we are better than that. The UK public is better than that.

Very true. After the Brexit vote, I spoke to my students - only one had actually bothered to vote! I said well don't complain about the outcome, then! (They did).

Let them think that - I'm quite happy for them to spiral into oblivion.

Do they think that little of us?

Yes.

It’s because Reform is picking up vote share. It’s not just the U.K. though, it’s similar to some EU countries

IsoldeWagner · 06/05/2024 14:20

Absolutely. Right wing parties are doing well in Europe.

Yep. It’s impacting differently here due to the voting system and not having PR

DuncinToffee · 06/05/2024 14:35

So what if right-wing parties doing well in other countries. Do yo really want to follow suit or would you prefer to buck the trend?

I know which is my preference

IsoldeWagner · 06/05/2024 14:38

It's an observation. I was reading about it this morning.

You can read lots of things.

For example I read that Sadiq Khan was well on course to lose the London Mayoral election .

It's just a normal cyclical system. Every few years, and particularly after something as big as COVID, and a war, and a COL crises, none of which were created by our government (or most of our nearest neighbours) no-one is pleased with how their government handled it. Left or Right, it just swings back and forth. That's how it goes. In reality, in the current world of conflict and climate, local country governments can only really tinker around the edges. We are all at the mercy of the global shifts.

EasternStandard · 06/05/2024 14:46

If people think it’s not likely I’ll guess we’ll see soon with the June EP elections

But as we know, EP elections are treated differently to local and national elections. The UK elected Farage for fucks sake. Who proceed to do fuck all apart from count his wages and not vote for anything. Then he came back here with tales of corrupt Eurocrats who took their wages and did nothing,.

What the likelyhood of a right wing European countries got to do with the UK GE?

Are you in favour of a more right wing government here? Or would you like to go a different direction?

It still impacts policy. They tend to be slow moving, see recent policy agreement on migration, but it’s that sort of thing that will follow if it shifts politically.

Maybe you have it correct and the articles are wrong, so I guess we’ll see in June.

And then US presidential elections, who knows who’ll take that.

QuickDraining · 06/05/2024 14:58

The Tories surely know their time is up. And at this point, I doubt they care two figs. They'll have until November to strip the public purse even further. Then leave the next Government in a woeful position. I'm amazed they got this far. Can't really see Labour with a majority. So doubt they'll even have much wiggle room to do anything useful. But we live in hope.

SerendipityJane · 06/05/2024 14:59

Trump does. And it ain't him. He's already started inoculating his followers for a loss in a way winners don't.

Interesting then that in the UK Right wing parties did much less well than they did last time those seats were contested and centrist and centre left parties did better thsi time?

Yes, I'm just watching the trends. My sister lives in Europe and has noted a move to the right. We shall see.

Good job we left Europe then, so we can happily move to the left in the UK and not worry about what Europe is doing then.
