To wonder why no one seasons food anymore

Visiting my daughter for lunch - cooking a roast. I remarked that she hadn't added any salt and pepper to the meat before cooking. She looked at me as if I was mad and said of course not - salt is bad for you.

I'm in my 60's and growing up all meat was seasoned before cooking (no other way of doing it) and of course people could add more afterwards to suit their taste.

But it seems everyone wants their food to be unseasoned (tasteless) nowadays.

Or am I out of touch?

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t season food when cooking! You must know some strange people if nobody you know seasons.

Haydenn · 05/05/2024 16:27

my mum stopped seasoning food when
she had kids because salt is bad for you, but she’s the only person I know who does this. Everyone else seasons when cooking

Summerbay23 · 05/05/2024 16:28

It depends, I add a lot less than I used to (I’m in my 50s), I don’t for instance add salt to boiled veg. My DF and his wife (in their 70s) add sooooo much salt and pepper to everything, all their food is massively over seasoned (I sometimes wonder if they’re losing their taste buds).

FlyingPizzaMonkey · 05/05/2024 16:29

Well too much salt is bad for you.

I still remember my grandparents chucking salt on veg and boiling them til the end of time. No thanks.

mitogoshi · 05/05/2024 16:29

Depends on what it is, meat contains salt so i wouldn't add extra, salt is bad for you. Gravy has plenty of salt. My roasts are full of flavour

HyggeTygge · 05/05/2024 16:29

I love how you've confused "your daughter" and "everyone" Grin

frankentall · 05/05/2024 16:29

My food tastes fine without adding salt and pepper thanks.

cranberrypi · 05/05/2024 16:30

it you add salt to everything all the time your sense of taste becomes dulled and you are at risk of heart disease - much healthier to be used to the taste of food without salt.

mitogoshi · 05/05/2024 16:30

@frankentall Not just me thenGrin

OverthinkerTinker · 05/05/2024 16:30

I don't add salt whilst cooking if I'm cooking for my two children (both under the age of five), but I do use spices and other seasonings.

EmmyPankhurst · 05/05/2024 16:30

Does she just add less than you like (which might mean none!).

One of my friends complains I don't add enough salt to veg/ pasta etc.

I grew up in a low salt household and just don't really like the taste of stuff if lots of salt has been added.

I hand her the salt cellar!

Lyricallie · 05/05/2024 16:31

Literally don’t know anyone who doesn’t season their food and I’m in my 30s.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 05/05/2024 16:32

I work in a school (3-18) - kitchens, dining rooms and staff rooms do not have any salt or pepper. It’s not allowed. Sugar is only allowed in staff rooms, dining rooms get honey as a sweetener. No home economics taught either.
I don’t think we are the only school to do so either, .. So no, it’s not going to be that rare that people do not use seasoning, as that is what they are used to and grown up with.

This.

DrJonesIpresume · 05/05/2024 16:33

Ask yourself why you think you need to put salt on food before cooking it?

MiddleagedBeachbum · 05/05/2024 16:33

Who is everyone?!

I season food, as does my family and to be honest I can’t think of a time when I’ve eaten anyone else’s cooking and it’s not been seasoned, but if I had, not sure I’d even notice other than seasoning it myself?

but of course, everyone (!) no longer seasons food 🙄🤣

This is what I was going to say.

I never add salt when I am cooking food. I use other herbs and spices a lot, and black pepper, but not salt.

My FIL always added lots of salt to the end product, but nobody else did/does. I thought he needed so much more salt in the end as that was what he had got used to over the years. I think, in the end, it can dull your taste buds.

I am in my 60s.

Iscreamtea · 05/05/2024 16:35

We don't generally add salt, it's bad for you and your taste buds adapt. When we eat food that has added salt it just tastes salty to us because we aren't used to it any more. I think people who add salt end up adding more and more because their taste buds get so used to it they need to add more to taste it.

vodkaredbullgirl · 05/05/2024 16:35

Well I have put some salt on my pork to make pork crackling.

Stressyfab · 05/05/2024 16:36

Seasoning doesn’t always mean salt though, could use lemon and herbs etc. It’s definitely a pet peeve of mine 😬

Soigneur · 05/05/2024 16:36

Likewise, why does no one have milk in coffee anymore? My brother doesn’t have milk in coffee so that means no one does right?

🤣🤣 she says everyone her age does the same. Everyone I know (of my age) does add salt and pepper beforehand. I must admit though that my parents who are in their 80's add loads of salt to their cooked meal before even trying it, which also seems odd to me.
Just to add, my parents are as fit as a fiddle.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 05/05/2024 16:37

I've never added salt in cooking. It's mostly unnecessary and if you never do it, you don't miss it.

I just use other herbs and spices.

Roselilly36 · 05/05/2024 16:38

It does make food tastier I agree, DS2 cooks a lot and swears by adding MSG to certain foods.

RandomUsernameHere · 05/05/2024 16:38

I never add salt to food. Pepper, yes. I think you quickly get used to less or no salt and the more you have of it the more you want.
