To wonder why no one seasons food anymore

Visiting my daughter for lunch - cooking a roast. I remarked that she hadn't added any salt and pepper to the meat before cooking. She looked at me as if I was mad and said of course not - salt is bad for you.

I'm in my 60's and growing up all meat was seasoned before cooking (no other way of doing it) and of course people could add more afterwards to suit their taste.

But it seems everyone wants their food to be unseasoned (tasteless) nowadays.

Or am I out of touch?

Salt isn’t seasoning though. Fine for mixing or if you’re making something extra special (pork crackling needs it for sure), but seasoning is so much more than salt and pepper. I do add a pinch in gravy though, one thing I can’t give it up in. So many options to go to before salt when cooking.

Porridgeislife · 05/05/2024 16:54

Oh and salads taste awful without salt! The word literally means salted herb.

LordPercyPercy · 05/05/2024 16:54

I use a fair amount of salt on my food, but I don't eat anything processed so I'm not using up my RDA that way. Also I tend to low blood pressure.

But chips........

I love chips but cant stand a salty taste, in fact I'd go so far as to say I wouldn't eat them if someone had added salt

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 05/05/2024 16:55

@Kalevala I have no idea. In the kitchens they use a lot of other spices, but no salt or pepper allowed.

CountingCrones · 05/05/2024 16:56

Meat, potatoes, eggs, pasta and tomatoes all need salt. Veg is all the better for it, but not with such a heavy hand as meat and spuds.

GingerAndLimeCurd · 05/05/2024 16:56

I'd put salt on pork joint for crackling - but tend to favour low salt dishes so use lemon/spices more than salt.

Salt is often hidden in things so we consume more than we realise.

I often leave it out of sweet baking recipes - which I increasingly find it's added to -(it's very common in USA cooking shows) but that often after doing a run though first with every step and then next run though without and finding little difference.

ClipClopperDontStopper · 05/05/2024 16:57

A lot of poor cooks on this thread.

'but salt is baaaad for you'.

Hugosmaid · 05/05/2024 16:57

My cousin bought MSG the other day 😭😭😭

But yes I season.

Laserwho · 05/05/2024 16:57

I suffer from high blood pressure. Adding salt when cooking could be fatal. In my house if someone wants salt they add it at the table

utilitarianism · 05/05/2024 16:58

I've always heard that too much salt is bad for you, but I also thought that most people used it anyway.... There is a difference between using it sparingly and with a heavy hand. I didn't realize it was a trend for younger people to avoid salt. If anything I would have thought middle-aged or older people would be more worried about it, as they are already at an increased risk of the problems that excess salt can exacerbate.

I would consider decreasing the amount of salt I use, but life is too short to be cutting salt out entirely!

Waitingfordoggo · 05/05/2024 16:58

I used herbs, spices and pepper when cooking. I only really add salt to the cooking water for potatoes and pasta. Anyone who wants salt can add it to their food before they eat it. My personal preference is to put it on potatoes and some veg but I don’t find that meat needs salt added.

Overly salty food is unpleasant to eat- and once that salt is on there you can’t reverse it. Much easier to leave it as is and let people put on however much salt they want.

HopeOneOfThosePeopleIsAMonkeyBecauseThisIsBanana · 05/05/2024 16:58

I stopped doing it when I had a baby to wean. They are now 20.
I do add salt to things like chips though, but DC never sprinkle salt on their food, which I’m pleased about.

pinksheetss · 05/05/2024 17:01

31 here and I don't salt anything other than the water when boiling pasta/potatoes

Hate the taste of it. My partner adds it to his food after we have cooked and is fine with that.

I'm the person who will ask for vinegar only when at the chippy

catlady7 · 05/05/2024 17:02

I add salt and pepper to food. Love sea salt added to my massive salad

Sillyjane · 05/05/2024 17:03

I fifty and realise salt is terrible for you, I don’t add it and put it on the table for people to add their own.

Can't eat them without salt. I do like a salty taste but try and be careful about salt input.

AnitaLoos · 05/05/2024 17:03

Salt is delicious! Butter with salt crystals is food of the gods. My blood pressure is perfect so it’s not doing me any harm. If I had high blood pressure I’d probably rein it in, but I’m so glad I don’t have to.

ValueAddedTaxonomy · 05/05/2024 17:03

I'm the same age as you, OP, and like most people I cut down on the salt I added to food decades ago, in line with all the public info on the subject. However, I didn't stop adding it. No one I know has stopped adding it either. My son chucks it in by the handful.
It think you are generalising huh-yuuuugely from a very small base. You are also making me feel ancient!!: I had a convo with my mother-in-law two decades ago that was similar to the one you had with your daughter. She was the one whose salt practices were out of line with modern health messaging and she is about 85 now.

Got to have gravy with a roast lol

Controversial I know, but gravy is gross (I'm not British 😉)

Has to be made from the meat juice to make proper gravy, not that crap stuff you just add boiling water to.

When you’re cooking, it’s relatively easy to reverse saltiness by adding some kind of acid eg lemon juice.

Obviously a bit trickier once it’s plated and in front of you, granted.

Idiotic. I would be bringing in those little packets of salt and pepper you get in restaurants. I always used to save those up at work for my packed lunches. I try not to go overboard with salt, but I've never heard of any reason not to use black pepper.

It is if you have high blood pressure or are very young. Check out the NHS website for the information.

I would rather be considered a bad cook than someone who harms others.
