To ask how much you spend on your holiday?

grassseed · 04/05/2024 18:47

How much do you spend a year on your holiday and how much is this as a percentage of your income?

E.g. do you earn £30,000 as take home pay and spend £1000 a year (3% of your take home pay).

I'm just wondering as I earn an above average amount, but when I'm on holiday I feel like I'm scrimping compared to the other people I see holidaying and I'm wondering if these are the super rich or if people spend a much larger proportion of their take home pay on holidays

£120k take home between us. As our mortgage reduced we spend more on holidays - usually 2x big hols a year and a few weekends. £10-20k per year but we cut back in other areas to afford it.

We spend a lot as dh insists on taking our adult kids with partners. Most we've ever spent on one was 90k but that was for our joint 50th's taking everyone away. Depends what kind of trip it is- obvs a long wkend city break going to be less than a week's skiing. I guess it varies

do you enjoy the holidays?

Sendinsanity · 05/05/2024 12:13

Oh I know, we could definitely do it a lot cheaper but we just go less often for longer. We usually go for 3.5 weeks, just over 2 weeks at one of the moderate disney hotels then a week at the hard rock or portofino. Discovery cove is our other unreasonable expense but loved treat when there too

Beyond the 3 yearly holiday to florida… no holiday whatsoever? no weekend away? no UK break?

MrBouc · 05/05/2024 15:41

We're around 10% (4k) . Most years slightly less and stay in Europe or with relatives, and every so often, so maybe every 4ish years spend more to go long haul.

We are definitely in the "budget style holiday in further afield destinations" camp though. I know some people prefer to stay in accommodation which is a step up from home, but we aren't really bothered about that so choose accordingly.

To be honest I find the family holidays really stressful. Unfortunately it's dh's ideal.

it’s your money too @ohthejoys21 so why aren’t you asserting yourself?

ColonelMustardEatingCustard · 05/05/2024 16:00

Had to work it out, but about 7% of take home pay. I put aside £160 per month and my budget for two weeks as our main holiday is £2,000 (me + two teens). Camping.

I got a small bonus this year, which I have spent on flights to visit a family member who lives abroad. So we're actually getting two holidays this year.

It's a challenge to save that - especially when lots of other costs are rising- but I do prioritise our summer holiday over other things. We camp because it can be really cheap in France and that leaves most of our budget for activities. Have had a couple of high outgoings on house maintenance recently, and I may have to raid the holiday fund to help cover them. But first I'm eating my way through the freezer, just in case I can get to the end of the month that way rather than 'steal' from our holiday.

Holidays are so subjective, though. We love camping, so it works for us. I have friends who spend (and earn) a lot more than I do, but I just don't fancy their holidays.

I'm now trying to make room in my budget for £25/month to go into another pot, with the aim of having enough to top us to something a bit further afield after eldest's A-levels.

I would love to know how you spent £90k on a holiday!!!!!

We've travelled all over and stayed in some top hotels but £90k is a ridiculous figure

did you see my post in response to your post?

DrCoconut · 05/05/2024 16:08

Main holiday is £200 for accommodation plus some petrol to get there and spends once there. We'd eat anyway so I don't really count food other than eating out. Then a camp for around £60. Plus fuel and food. We had a trip booked earlier in the year but had to cancel as DS was ill. That was when the train company had a sale on and I got the return journey for under £10 so decided to treat us all to a night at a holiday inn rather than a day trip. I'm 🤯 at all these expensive holidays on here but I know everyone's budget is different. I'd travel loads if i could afford it.

catchthebeat · 05/05/2024 16:08

Wow, this thread has been really eye-opening!

Our take home pay is about 100k.

We probably spend about £800 on holidays per year. So about 0.8%

We usually stay in a static caravan somewhere, and go out of season. The last time we went abroad we did Eurocamp. I genuinely didn't know it was normal to spend like 10% of your income on holidays.

troppibambini6 · 05/05/2024 16:17

A lot.
Three weeks in summer usually budget around 10k
A week in May 6-8k
Sometimes a week in October 4k
A couple of weekends away I. The uk maybe 2k

Earnings around 150k and a family of 5 sometimes 6 if older dd comes.

NeverHadHaveHas · 05/05/2024 16:21

Household income £210ish. Spent 10%ish for the past couple of years on a week/10 days beach hol in Europe and 2 weeks in America each year.

and you never talk holidays with family, friends and colleagues?

Bigcat25 · 05/05/2024 16:25

About $4k this yr plus spending money, but that's just visiting family so won't be too much. Might spend a bit more on a few day rd trip. After tax income around $145k in Canada, but that's fairly new for us. I think people in NA take less trips, less vacay time and not as close to Europe.

No I'll say only if we also go somewhere I want eg Safari!

I don’t think it is? Do most people earning 120k ish have 12k spare a year?

Nw22 · 05/05/2024 17:10

By take home do people mean after tax/pensions etc or just what they earn?

Newmumatlast · 05/05/2024 17:10

Not sure what take home is (self employed and fluctuates per month) but gross taxable is about 140k. I must be extremely tight as I'd estimate that I've spent/will spend once spends accounted for around £1500 so far this year which covers 4 caravan and Butlins breaks. Will have a summer break too but probably will do another caravan or lodge type of break. I don't fancy going abroad with little kids and they love the kids entertainment at places like butlins and parks so I'm happy to oblige.

Busybusybusy73 · 05/05/2024 17:16

Single parent and usually one holiday with the kids, plus several on my own.

Only earn £30k, but low outgoings. Usually £500 for a holiday with kids (plus meals out etc) and another £2500 for additional breaks (not including meals etc), so about £3k overall and about 10% of my budget.
