Just curious. I’ll be voting for them reluctantly but I’m not really sure what can or will be done about the state of the country. It seems we’re skint so they’ll just have to tinker around the edges.

The fact remains unchanged that he benefitted from a private education as did his wife and their DC benefit from private school facilities (he was at a GDST event watching hie daughter compete a few days ago) yet he now wants to put barriers up to prevent other people (from similar backgrounds as his own) accessing that same education.

Why shouldn’t he watch his daughter compete - sign of an involved parent isn’t it?

SplendidRhododendronsDeirdre · 04/05/2024 11:58

I haven’t read the whole thread just the first half of the first page and am lolling at the private school parents flapping because they are going to be taxed fairly, and fuck everything else. So, so, so selfish and typical Tory.

I am looking forward to a much fairer society where the rich don’t trample over the less well off with their sharp elbows to get what they want.

I am looking forward to a government that isn’t self serving and abides by the Nolan Principles. Let’s get some morality back and sweep away the corrupt.

Looool @ this massive stretch

His DC attended an event at a private school 😂😂😂😂😂😂

@twistyizzy
I think the responses you're getting is that for the vast majority of people they couldn't save up beforehand or find 15k a year surplus (to essential housing, good and pension costs). 75-100k on schooling is eye watering sums for the vast majority. Doesn't matter if you save up or pay as you go, or any combo in between. That's why your getting people laughing at you. It is out of touch too think that access to that level of resource puts you in the 'normal' bracket. It really doesn't, you're wealthy. The average UK salary is 35k. Even with two full time earners no family on 70k is happily spending 15k after tax and essential expenditure on education, unless they were given huge help with housing or are being subbed by inheritance/ gifts.
People who pay private fees are simple not average earners.

hettie · 04/05/2024 12:04

For the uneducated amongst us what is GDST?

StarlingsForever · 04/05/2024 12:18

Girls' Day School Trust - group of twenty something private schools

Marjoriefrobisher · 04/05/2024 12:23

StarlingsForever · 04/05/2024 11:34

That's a bit twisty. Keir Starmer attended Reigate Grammar which was a state grammar school when he joined, which was converted into a private school and as that was the case, he was exempt from fees up to sixth form. He stayed there for sixth form and received a charitable bursary. His parents never sent him to private school. They were a nurse and a toolmaker and staunch Labour supporters. He was named after Keir Hardie. Different picture entirely.

then he ought to allow those children currently in private schools to continue on the vat free basis on which they joined and only impose it on new joiners, having benefitted himself from an accommodation designed to ensure existing pupils are not prejudiced.

JessS1990 · 04/05/2024 12:38

May I just take the time to observe how delightful it is to see some posters in a flap as they have realised that Labour will when the next GE and make the country a fairer nicer place to live.

cardibach · 04/05/2024 12:38

Saintmariesleuth · 04/05/2024 00:16

@cardibach yes, my agenda is that I would support high taxes for a society that provides good quality education, healthcare and other services for the public. I believe that the government should place the interests of its people above all else. I think that a society that supports the public interest ends up stronger and happier. This isn't happening now, and I am concerned that the current Labour party is not focused on its original founding values. I want to see the Tories out, Labour in. I am pleased to see Labour doing well in the local elections and the polls. I think you misunderstand me.

Maybe I did. I want all those things too, as a Labour Party member.

His child was competing at an event for private school kids being held at a private school using the facilities of a private school.
But then if you can afford a 2 million pound house I don't think you need to worry about private school fees or VAT.
My point is that there is a massive amount of hypocrisy in the Labour Party. "Socking it to the elite" when most Labour MPs make up the elite.

That maybe so but they must have been secretly wealthy as they didn’t move out of Reigate and we all know that Surrey is only for the wealthy😬

That's just not true. Not all of Surrey is stockbroker stock and even in the really wealthy areas, there are all types of housing.

If anyone think Labour won't be next government they haven't been paying attention to any media or polling for at least 12 months if not longer and have no awareness of UK political history.

I'd be staggered if Labour aren't the next government - it's more the majority they have and our system really needs a decent opposition (doesn't have to be Tory just someone raising issues with Gov legislation - not we'd have done that sooner or better with no details).

I've also been listening to the little they've said so far - more out sourcing for NHS to private companies - which actually makes sense given waiting lists times but isn't what many on here have said - and they don't seem bothered by Uni going under in one interview with shadow cabinet member when asked about it - they seem weak on women's right those noise have been made recently - beyond that it's waiting and seeing.

I think they're inheriting a shit show - limited scope for big changes. I expect they'll get in blame Tory's - and they aren't wrong - and immediately seriously damped down expectations - I do hope they may get on better with EU.

You didn't answer my question about whether he should have been moved from a school because it became private?

So what if he has (or hasn't) a £2million house? Can he only be bona fide Labour if he lives in a house of a certain modesty? He was successful before politics. He had humble beginnings (first in family to go to Uni) and did well for himself. Would you hold that against him? I think the fact that he took his Oxford Law degree to become a human rights barrister rather than chasing the City bucks says a lot about him anyway but that's another matter. You can be well off and still have left-wing values and politics and consider the big picture. Also, in my book, voting is about more than getting hung up on one or two policies which are not great for someone as an individual.

NefertitiV · 04/05/2024 13:07

pinotnow · 04/05/2024 11:25

Oh my, so tone deaf, @twistyizzy £15k to spare on school that is otherwise freely available but not wealthy and then totally misread the incredulous laughter from others. I prefer stinking rich people who blatantly don't give a fuck about anyone else than this pretence that 'ordinary hardworking people' afford private schools by being frugal and not going on holidays. It's really insulting.

I agree with @twistyizzy. We went on our first real, big holiday after our children had graduated. We lived quite frugally while they were at (private) school - that was the choice we made. We don't regret it one bit.

Tootiredforallthiscrap · 04/05/2024 13:11

@StarlingsForever agreed. It’s ok for Tories to be posh and out of touch with ordinary people. It’s alright for tories to be disdainful of working class people (unless you’re in the derided red wall and might vote for them). But god forbid a working class done good Labour supporter who lives in a nice house. Then it’s ‘champagne socialist, out of touch liberal elites’. If you’re a posh toff on the other hand, perfectly happy doffing your cap a5 them, no questions asked. It’s laughable.

Tootiredforallthiscrap · 04/05/2024 13:11

@NefertitiV frugally 😂 if I stopped eating, sold my car and moved the family to a tent still couldn’t afford private education.

Gleepbleepable · 04/05/2024 13:12

More of the same, they've said so. I suppose we'll see the disgusting Rwanda scheme put to bed, our human rights and environmental standards protected for a few more years. But essentially just a slowing down of our slide into neoliberalism.

I expect the party itself to follow the same path Starmer has put it on, to become less democratic, to increase large donations from wealthy individuals and to shrink in actual membership, until he's run out of lefty Jews to expel.

StarlingsForever · 04/05/2024 13:19

Who says they won't. I don't think anyone yet knows the detail and timeframe of the mooted policy (but make all kinds of conjecture about it anyway). If the policy is phased in over time, that is precisely what the situation could be.

I don't give a rats ass where he lives/went to school until he starts targeting the people who are trying to give their kids the same education he got. At that point it becomes relevant. He can afford a house in the catchment of a good state school, we can't so we chose private and now he wants to make that unaffordable.
His policy will reduce/get rid of the very bursaries that enabled him to attend private school so he is denying access to the very same kids as he was. That's what I have a problem with.
He is pulling the drawbridge up after him.
