Is a bit of a thread about a thread...

But pants...

Pants are underwear in my world (and the kids)

But my dh (not american) speaks of them as if they are outerwear...

Yanbu - pants = underpants / underwear

Yabu - pants = trousers / outerwear

Pretty interchangeable now. I cannot abide panties so it is kinckers and trousers / pants here

IncognitoUsername · 02/05/2024 17:10

I grew up in the South where pants are underwear, then moved to the North where pants are trousers. Was rather confused at first.

Belfastchild74 · 02/05/2024 17:11

Eek, panties is a no for me too.

But it's still pants...
I could live with knickers alright...

I'm confused too. I live in the North and nobody I know calls trousers pants?

dementedpixie · 02/05/2024 18:13

No to panties or knickers
Pants and boxers or undercrackers 😂

BobbyBiscuits · 02/05/2024 18:14

I used to think pants for trousers for a non American speaker was an abomination against language. Now not so much. I think if you call trousers pants, then you need to call pants underwear? Haha. I've taken to saying drawers to mean trousers which is a bit stupid really.
'Briefs' for me is horrific. I don't think I've ever heard anyone actually saying that though. Thank god. 'panties' is pretty dire as well tbh.
Let's just never talk about two legged garments for below the waist ever again! Lol.

KEVINNNN · 02/05/2024 18:16

I live in the North West near Liverpool pants are trousers. I remember going to uni 20 years ago and being confused what people were talking about!

Needmorelego · 02/05/2024 18:24

I frequently call pants (as in the underwear type) "pantaloons".
I also refer to ones bottom as "your butt-tocks".
So "put your butt-tocks in your pantaloons" is a perfectly normal sentence for me to say.
I also like the word "brasserie" which must be spoken with a fake french accent.

Ok- where I live in the NW (think pies) everyone calls trousers pants. Maybe it’s more specific than a North/South divide?!

Hmm... Maybe, I'm on t'other side of the Pennines though so not sure about the NW

I also lived in the North of England and because of the many years I lived there I also call trousers pants.
Years later I call both trousers and knickers pants.

5128gap · 02/05/2024 19:13

Cargo pants and sweat pants are trousers. All other two legged below the waist garments are called jeans or trousers. Pants are knickers. Under pants are what my mum called my Dad's Y fronts.

LieutOliviaBenson · 02/05/2024 19:22

I'm Northern, pants are trousers.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 02/05/2024 19:24

It's not really a case of YABU or YANBU imo. It's regional. Pants have always been underwear to me, but I moved from SE England to the NW and most people here call trousers pants.

Are you in the USA?
In the North of England they're always trousers when they're not kecks.

I agree! I only ever heard them called pants on American tv shows. Pants are underwear in the north.

And interestingly the French call a bra a soutien gorge. Literally a throat support

Nope. NW of UK

TowerRavenSeven · 02/05/2024 20:19

I’m in America and pants are outerwear bottoms. I work for a non profit where I send clothing to social workers and both my supervisor (Middle 20’s young man) and I both call it underwear we both could not bear to say panties and briefs!!

Svolvaer · 02/05/2024 20:37

My daughter’s wife is from the U.S. so they call underwear “secret pants” so there’s no confusion.

Brasserie would be a caff up north

Pants is not just American for trousers. It is also used in Ireland. I was very confused on here for a while with posters using pants to refer to underwear.
