That colleague made comment about ginger babies

To be annoyed about a colleague making comments about ginger hair?

A colleague has recently come back from maternity leave and was talking about her dd.

She said she's so glad she's got brown hair, it would be the worst to have a ginger baby, I would of hated to have a ginger baby it would of been horrible.... she then glanced around the room and noticed my hair and made an awkward face.

I'm pregnant with my first and may well have a red haired baby, which I would personally love.

Is it the pregnancy hormones talking or am I right to be pissed off that she's targeting red hair.... and even red haired babies??

My son has ginger hair. It is gorgeous. When he was a baby, someone would stop and comment how lovely it was every time we left the house, to the point I was worried my other child would feel left out! He's school age now and we get it less, but people still comment positively. Thankfully no negative comments so far. I also love that it makes him easier to spot in a crowd at school. The school put photos of them in a group on the app and I can always find the back of his head quickly!

blushroses6 · 02/05/2024 12:40

I’m ginger and have a ginger 18 month old. Thankfully we’ve not had any negative comments yet. It’s definitely one of the last forms of acceptable bullying - so insensitive if anyone in the room has had fertility issues too. I’d of replied to say something like as long as she grows up to be kind to others, her hair colour is irrelevant.

Dita73 · 02/05/2024 12:43

When my daughter was giving birth the midwife told her she could see the baby’s head. The midwife said most women ask at that point “it’s not ginger is it?”. It’s interesting why it’s hated so much

TheBirdintheCave · 02/05/2024 12:43

@penguinbiscuits Eh? How am I like the colleague? I'm not ashamed that my son is blonde. He's utterly adorable. I was just sad the colour he was born with faded away. I've not said his current hair colour is 'horrible' or 'the worst' or anything like that.

PhuckyNell · 02/05/2024 12:47

It's orange these days anyway not ginger apparently 😂

Writerscompanion · 02/05/2024 12:49

I have a gorgeous ginger nine month old (I'm blonde and Dad is sandy brown so she might be in for a surprise!) and it's so lovely. She seems to inspire ginger solidarity in red haired people who coo over her and she gets lots of attention generally/people remember her among other babies. I really hope it doesn't change as she grows older.

KirstenBlest · 02/05/2024 12:50

Get used to it, and have that perfect response to the people who will openly say to you 'What a shame she/he has ginger hair',
'Like me, you mean?'

BirdsofAmerica · 02/05/2024 12:52

Of course yanbu. Karate chop her on the windpipe and blame pregnancy hormones.

VenetiaHallisWellPosh · 02/05/2024 12:56

My DD was born with red hair. She's now auburn. She was never teased. I don't understand why red/ginger hair is considered fair game for teasing. We were lucky...when DD was small Brave came out and DD loved Merida to bits. Merida has red hair and did brave things.

FairyBreadQueen · 02/05/2024 12:57

There is a child in DS2s class who has the brightest orange hair and it's all thick and curly and bouncy. Exactly like Dennis in Hotel Transylvania. I commented to his mum how glorious his hair is and she beamed and said actually she always got lots of positive and admiring comments. Which was nice to hear. So hopefully negative comments will die eventually. Or hopefully people will realise how stupid they sound when they make them.

I'm boring mousy brown. I'd love to be ginger.

KreedKafer · 02/05/2024 13:01

YANBU, it's a horrible thing to say.

It would be horrible regardless of what characteristic she'd mentioned, in fact. If she'd said it would have been horrible to have a blonde baby or a baby with curly hair or something, that would also be a crass and unpleasant. I've never really understood why people feel it's OK to talk like that about ginger hair when they woudn't do it about any other feature.

Dotjones · 02/05/2024 13:02

She was probably just relieved because she thinks ginger people are more likely to be singled out for abuse, especially at school. Certainly that used to be the case.

SevenSeasOfRhye · 02/05/2024 13:03

Really stupid comment. I'd love to have red/ginger hair; the best I can do is red highlights where my greys are because red dye won't take on my dark hair.

BigFatLiar · 02/05/2024 13:05

It's weird. Ages ago I pointed out to DH a site about 'ginger people have no soul'. Seems ginger hating is a thing. DH didn't get it, he thinks red heads are attractive.

KreedKafer · 02/05/2024 13:05

TheBirdintheCave · 02/05/2024 11:55

Very rude of her. My son was strawberry blonde when he was born but unfortunately it changed to a sort of dusky blonde when he was around one. I was so disappointed! I'd love my kids to have ginger hair. It's such a beautiful colour. I have my fingers crossed for the next one 😅

You realise that saying you find dark blonde hair 'disappointing' on a child is no different from saying you'd find ginger hair 'disappointing' on a child, don't you?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 02/05/2024 13:05

My friend and her DH are both ginger and so their 3 kids have gorgeous red hair. She is quite self deprecating but in a jokey way

PuppetQueen · 02/05/2024 13:05

It just so happens that I'm sitting at my kitchen table right now, with my hair covered in gloopy red hair dye just so I can have a bit of what your colleague despises so much! I have always loved all shades of red and ginger hair. It's the rarest hair colour on earth and I think it's stunning. Nicole Kidman, Professor Hannah Fry, Isla Fisher, Ed Sheeran, Damian Lewis and Jesse Tyler Ferguson - all very attractive, in no small part because of their glowing locks.

A tiny little shout-out to the guy who presents the safeguarding training video that I watch for work each year - I don't know what he's called, but his fiery hair and ice blue eyes make it much more enjoyable!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 02/05/2024 13:06

sorry posted too soon. I have to pay £110 every 10 weeks to have red hair!

Dartmoorcheffy · 02/05/2024 13:08

I'm a brunette but I love ginger hair. Have always fancied blokes with ginger hair too.

SquirrelRed · 02/05/2024 13:09

I have 2 ginger haired children who I'm obviously very protective over so would not be happy at all if someone made a comment like this. I will say though that since they were born I have had so many comments from random strangers over how beautiful their hair is, my daughter is now 11 and even last week a gentleman stopped me in Tesco to compliment her hair. Your colleague just sounds like a nasty woman who hasn't grown up.

Fourfurrymonsters · 02/05/2024 13:12

I’m a redhead and was bullied stupid for it at school in the 70s. My son is also a green-eyed redhead, the most striking and beautiful thick, shiny copper colour - he’s now 20, 6ft 2 and rocking the full Viking look with longer hair and big beard etc. Luckily he’s never been bullied for it as I think (in Scotland at least, where’s its way more common tho still rare) times have changed a little. But I would have given your colleague a long, hard stare for her cheek.

Pieceofpurplesky · 02/05/2024 13:12

My gorgeous DS is an unusual colour redhead. I always say he is the colour of Autumn - russet/gold/red.
He's 20 now and handsome!

Furrydogmum · 02/05/2024 13:16

I'm a redhead, my mum is a redhead. She spent both my pregnancies worrying I'd have a redheaded son! Apparently "it's worse for boys" 🙄

BlastedPimples · 02/05/2024 13:18

I love red / ginger hair.

Your colleague is a halfwit to say anything like this, op.

Inyourwildestdreams · 02/05/2024 13:20

She sounds like a joy @CheesexCrackers 😬 that would have pissed me off too and I wouldn’t have been able to stop myself saying something so well done you for not 😬

I grew up wishing for red hair 🙈🤣 I just love it! I always wanted to be the red headed girl in Atomic Kitten 🙃😂 DH has red hair and I secretly prayed the whole time I was pregnant that baby wouldn’t have red hair purely because I’d be so jealous being the only one in the house without 🥲😂
