Humiliated by John Lewis staff

Hi
okay so I know this will seem very trivial to some but it is playing on my mind because I think I am a very reasonable and polite person and feel I was humiliated for absolutely no reason.

so I bought a jumper from a John Lewis store (Sweaty Beaty brand). The jumper was in the sale for £65. I wore it once and washed it according to the instructions. I put it on yesterday and my Mum commented that it had faded, the jumper is beige but I noticed it had a big white patch where the colour had seemingly ran out of it on the front. As I know John Lewis is known for their customer service I decided I would take it to the store to see if they would offer an exchange, I still had the receipt showing it had been purchased recently.

I went to the womenswear till but the queue was massive (I had my 12 week old baby with me) so I went to a till near the shoes. The girl serving must have been about 17/18. I explained to her what had happened and said I wasn’t sure if I could swap it but thought it was worth an ask. The girl was very polite but said she needed to check with a colleague, fine not a problem. She returned with a colleague who didn’t even acknowledge me. At this point there was a now a queue at the till. They both turned away from me and girl number 2 started whispering and inspecting the jumper. This probably went on for about 10 minutes. Girl number 1 then turned back to me and said something to the effect of I’m really sorry but I need to check with a manager…I assumed girl 2 was a manager but again I said okay. She then called someone on the phone. I continued to wait and at this point my baby started to cry, girl number 1 obviously feeling uncomfortable called again and apologised, again fine as not her fault that baby is crying or that manager is taking a long time. So eventually the manager turns up and calls me ‘sweetheart’ okay a term of endearment but I am a 34 year old professional so odd of her to do. Anyway…she inspects the jumper and says she can’t see the white patch, I said to her I couldn’t either until I went into natural light and my Mum pointed it out. At this point I am starting to feel agitated and embarrassed as there is a queue, my baby is crying and I am basically being told I’m making things up so I say ‘don’t worry about it for the sake of £60 I’ll just have the jumper back,’ she then says to go with her outside the store to natural light to show her the patch…seriously? I reply no it’s fine I’m not dragging my baby outside I’ll just have the jumper back. Again she insists I go outside with her and I again say it’s fine I’ll have the jumper back. She then turns to girl number 1 and says ‘you’ll come with me outside to look won’t you’ so they both then walk off and leave me at the till with my now screaming baby. Sometime later they return with ANOTHER member of staff, so now 4 people have looked at this bloody jumper! The manager says they all agree there is nothing wrong with it. Now I am quite frankly pissed off and humiliated and say ‘ I told you I would take the jumper back but instead I have been standing here whilst 4 people inspect it, I didn’t demand a refund I simply asked if it was possible to do anything such as an exchange.’ She replies there’s nothing wrong with it. So I say (probably wrongly so but I’d had enough) ‘if you go on my account you will see how much money I spend in this store, do you seriously think I would make things up to get back £60?’ She replies again there is nothing wrong with it.

for context I worked in retail for years both before starting university, during and after (the irony is I actually also worked in that John Lewis 😂) I get that it can sometimes be shit and people are rude but I was honestly lovely and feel I was humiliated and spoken to like an idiot.

However I am also overly tired from the sleepless nights….so AIBU to wait to complain to the store?

I’m actually perplexed how people don’t under the issue with this. Firstly no you don’t go outside you park underneath. Secondly how is it reasonable to take someone outside then stand out there whilst the jumper is further inspected THEN if they agree come back inside etc etc. it’s a strange suggestion in my opinion.

Well it's totally reasonable if it's the only way to see the patch, I think she was being more than helpful

Wigtopia · 02/05/2024 06:43

ive always understood Dale items to be non- refundable and not eligible for exchange

Stravaig · 02/05/2024 06:50

I'd have gone straight to the Customer Services desk, not expected the shoe dept till to deal with a faulty womenswear complaint! At that point, you were all just muddling through.

muddyford · 02/05/2024 06:52

I had a similar experience in Sainsbury's twice this week. Treated as if their problem was caused by me. It's not helped by the bloody headsets they now wear so they don't listen properly to the person in front of them. I had five people trying to deal with a refund of £2. Came out feeling quite bruised and tearful.

ExpressCheckout · 02/05/2024 06:52

JL's customer service went down the pan several years ago, in my experience. I don't shop there any more.

Primark levels of service and shoddy aftercare seem to me to be the norm now at JL, but with added smugness and arrogance.

Take your money elsewhere, OP, JL don't deserve it.

I think it's more strange to expect them to exchange a jumper with no visible defect. If it needs natural light to see it, then obviously they are going to have to see it in natural light.

FTMaz · 01/05/2024 21:59

Hi
it’s in a shopping centre so going outside isn’t just like stepping out the door, you’d have to go out the whole centre

But they needed to see the white patch before taking back a washed jumper.

Wigtopia · 02/05/2024 06:43

That does not include faulty items.

Littlemisscapable · 02/05/2024 06:57

Unless the defect is really visible I feel like it's difficult to get refund/exchange. Even more so in a department store...u might have more luck with m&s. Yes they were faffing but it was obvious they didn't think anything was wrong with it and they didn't know how to say. Just let it go...its a stressful time with a new people and I think you can be very over sensitive (I was !) Contact sweaty betty.

Redpaisely · 02/05/2024 06:58

FTMaz · 01/05/2024 22:08

Exactly if you’re a child it’s okay..:my point is I’m not. You’re within your rights to take back an item if it is faulty…washed or not.

But fault was only visible in natural light. YABU

BobnLen · 02/05/2024 06:32

Having your baby with you had nothing to do with it, it's not the shops fault you choose to take a baby with you. Of course they want to inspect it, they can't resell it as it's been used

Don't be ridiculous, taking your baby with you is a normal course of life!

Chose you take a baby with you GrinGrinGrinGrin

”for the sake of £60…”

is it just me who thinks that’s actually quite a lot 😶

I agree with you.

GRex · 02/05/2024 07:01

bloodyplumbing · 02/05/2024 06:17

Just feed the baby while she was waiting...

Where exactly? By standing by the till?

Maybe OP is BF and doesn't want to sit in the middle of JL feeding?

This is why I liked having slings as well as the pram, they made it easy to feed standing up. My suggestion was to go to the baby room; staff can faff around with the jumper, baby gets sorted.

Doingmybest12 · 02/05/2024 07:04

Glass113 · 01/05/2024 22:03

It sounds like they were going out of their way to be on your side otherwise it just would have been a straight no.

I agree with this. They seemed to be trying hard to help and misread when you were saying fine, I won't bother then. Of course if there is a mark/change you can only see in day light ,they are going to suggest seeing it in daylight. I'm surprised you didn't anticipate this. I can imagine feeling stressed if I was you though with a queue building and all the time it took.

LuluBlakey1 · 02/05/2024 07:04

YANBU- it's ridiculous. If this was me in Newcastle John Lewis, I'd have had to go downstairs and through Eldon Square shopping centre to an outside door to get to natural daylight and then go all the way back, all with a member of JL staff (or all 4 members so they could agree), the jumper and the baby and in crowds of shoppers at the entrance. It's ridiculous. The time they have wasted on 4 staff salaries would have cost them more than the jumper.

bloodyplumbing · 02/05/2024 07:07

@GRex that's absolutely super that you could feed standing up, bravo 👏!

Not everyone can!

Imagine others being different to you!

FTMaz · 02/05/2024 07:09

DappledThings · 02/05/2024 06:20

Yes, just standing there. I never bottle fed so I don't know how much hassle that would have been if a bottle needed making up but if bf then yes. Would have solved the problem of the baby crying and passed the time while they faffed about getting third opinions.

Well I’m glad you think as a FTM of an EBF child getting your boob out, attempting to cover and holding the baby all in a queue of people whilst standing up is a reasonable thing to achieve 🙄

Nope. How the other half live eh.

Just been sat thinking what I would consider 'leaving it for the sake of' I went from. £60 to £16 to £6 to 60p and finally to 6p where I think I could afford to 'leave it for the sake of'

Wigtopia · 02/05/2024 07:12

bloodyplumbing · 02/05/2024 06:56

Oh wow I never knew that. Good to know. What about a situation where it is reduced because of a fault? Would the fault have to be listed in the ticket?

N0tfinished · 02/05/2024 07:13

Hi, I'd have been horrified as well OP. Sorry you had such a shit time. I thought, the white patch could be from washing liquid or powder not washing out properly. Most contain optical brighteners - I've had beige/cream items go weird in the past. Try putting it through a rinse again. Although if I were you I probably wouldn't ever wear it again!

DappledThings · 02/05/2024 07:13

Well it isn't unreasonable! It's not ideal but sometimes needs must and less stressful than listening to your baby cry.

WonderingWanda · 02/05/2024 07:15

They weren't humiliating you, they can't offer a refund for a fault they cannot see and they weren't going to ever swap a washed jumper. You admit yourself the fault wasn't visible so you were hoping to take back a used item with no visible (indoors) fault and just get a refund. If you genuinely believed the item was faulty you would've gone outside to prove it surely.

littlebopeepp234 · 02/05/2024 07:23

soupfiend · 01/05/2024 21:58

If Im honest I dont understand why you didnt go outside and show it to her

To say you werent going to go and 'drag your baby outside' didnt make any sense, you were presumably going to leave the store at some point werent you?

I agree with this. At the end of the day they couldn’t see a white patch. If the op had gone outside to show them where it was it would probably have made so much more of a difference. To stand there in full view of a queue who was waiting behind op for quite some time only for op to then refuse to go outside with the staff and instead tell them she will have the jumper back would look to me like the op was just chancing her luck and that there was no white patch in the first place. Not saying the op is lying, just saying how it would have looked to me if I was either one of the staff or a customer waiting in the queue. If you’re going to return something and wait for a very long time, causing queue to form behind you, at least go outside to point out the fault to the member of staff otherwise you have completely wasted everyone’s time

Mellowmallow201 · 02/05/2024 07:24

You probably felt more humiliated because your baby was really crying and drawing attention to you. I've been there before, it really stresses you out. So I'd say that happening made the situation seem worse than it was

BobnLen · 02/05/2024 07:27

bloodyplumbing · 02/05/2024 06:58

So why was the baby even mentioned then, it was irrelevant as it's a normal course of life
