AIBU to be furious at the scorn Giles Coren shows towards grieving parents?

Since she was diagnosed as a toddler, DD (12) ha suffered from serious food allergies. If she consumes even a tiny fragment of a peanut she will go into anaphylactic shock and must carry an epipen at all times. She is also allergic to other nuts, eggs, and orchard fruits. Every time she attends a birthday party, play date, school trip I have to brief the supervising parent and also when she was little I had to watch her vigilantly. It has been stressful and terrifying, especially now that she is getting older and more independent although she is extremely sensible and cautious. However, so many lives have been saved thanks to the tireless activism of other parents whose children have died tragically, and specifically because of Natasha’s Law (after the death of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse when her parents campaigned to change the law to demand increased transparency in the listing of ingredients for packaged food).

So it boils my blood to read in The Times today, Giles Coren’s column about how “baffled” he is that parents who’ve lost a child campaign against the “terrible 10,000 to 1 piece of bad luck that killed them.” As an allergies parent, unlike the contemptible Mr Coren, I have the utmost respect for grieving parents who lose a child to a preventable death and then try to save others from the same tragic fate.

Caitlyn Scott-Lee’s father can teach us all how to handle grief

Giles’s posited at the end of the column that autistic people’s emotionless response to tragedy is something “we can all learn from” as the alternative (parental activism) is a “hysterical reaction”. The idea that all autistic people are emotionless is a gross and offensive generalization.

That's your interpretation. I didn't read it that way. The phrase "hysterical reaction" isn't actually in the article either.

Sorry, I have slightly misquoted his article. He actually describes parental activists, and bizarrely all people who are neuro-typical or “allists”, as “hysterical souls”. As an allergies parent I’m sure that my own reaction to my own child’s preventable death would be what Giles Coren considers “hysterical”. But I’d much rather be like Nadim and Tanya Ednan-Laperouse and channel my grief into legal activism than the dignified silence Giles approves of.

Also it’s worth noting that Coren’s reaction to the death of a 33 year old journalist who accused him of benefiting from nepotism was to Tweet: “I’m sorry for the people who loved you, and any human death diminishes me, but can you f* off on to hell now where you belong”?” Unsurprisingly, Giles didn’t praise Dawn’s mother’s dignified and stoical reaction to him celebrating her daughter’s death:

“#gilescoren sad, bitter, little priveleged man but I still wouldn't wish you to go to hell when you die! #DawnFoster was loved and admired by many principled people ❤️”

He’s talentless and not very bright. The only way he can make a living is by being controversial and he only got that gig because of his dad. He’s not a nice person in real life and sadly has been given a platform to share his persona with a wider audience. He’s like a male Katie Hopkins with better connections.

He is indeed a first rate arse but I find him disturbingly sexually alluring.

🤢🤮

I hope his rabbit dies , and he can’t sell the hutch.

What a mean remark- the rabbit is blameless!

Surely this is a subject that needs respect and compassion. I can understand why bereaved families might campaign to prevent further avoidable deaths. I can equally well understand why others want to move on and try to forget. It’s pitching one against the other that is so inappropriate.

Exactly this.

Neither response shows more, or less love, or courage. Both are totally understandable.

I don't think I would have the courage to do what Natasha's parents did, but what they have achieved already is amazing and they are also genuinely lovely people.

I also think the example he has chosen to praise as laudable is an odd one.

I love Victoria Coren-Mitchell and I am always morbidly curious about what their relationship must be like. He’s an odious toad.

Considering he’s the polar opposite of David Mitchell, probably not very congenial!

Cattyisbatty · 02/05/2024 07:44

He’s a cunt and idk why the Times keep him on.

ElBandito · 02/05/2024 07:48

What are the odds when it is acceptable to campaign, I wonder if Giles could let us know.
Without campaigning parents like Anne Diamond we wouldn't have had 'back to sleep' for example which has saved the lives of countless babies significantly reducing the numbers of deaths from SIDS.

He is the same idiot who made up the William and Rose affair lie on Twitter.

He is an all rounder of a prick.

I didn’t think that was a lie at all. I thought she was meant to meet certain unmet needs in his bottom area… Giles Coren made it up?

Yes, he and Nicole Cliffe.

You can even take a lot at his recent Twitter activity where he was arguing with people who reminded him that it was he who made it up and he was saying he should never have believed because of course he has no inside info on the royals.

The rumour always had that sense of homophobia to me too.

alongwaytobed · 02/05/2024 08:23

Total wankstain and an example of how an expensive education can't polish a turd. He's always struck me as pretty dim. Don't think much of his wife either, she flaunts their daughter and son in magazine articles.

I expect he's wanking over this thread with excitement at seeing his name

EnjoythemoneyJane · 02/05/2024 08:35

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 01/05/2024 17:32

It’s a well known fact that he’s a colossus of A-holery.

Couldn’t put it better.

His sister apparently received all the brains and charm, so this over privileged turd can only resort to frantic court jester posturing and asshattery to attract the attention his howling insecurity demands. It’s really best not to give him any.

I have absolutely no idea about scurrilous rumours Giles Coren started about Prince William’s sexual fetishes.

But the more I learn about Giles Coren, the more appalling I find him. Especially his behaviour on social media. And his wife Esther is obviously very odd too as she seems to think he is marvelous.

He’s a cunt. All reasonable people know that. I don’t know why he’s given a platform.

Please try and ignore him. I’m sorry for the struggles with your daughter.

Motnight · 02/05/2024 08:41

Didn't he threaten his neighbour's child on what was Twitter?

I refuse to read anything he writes. Same with India Knight. Which can be challenging as I have a 7 day subscription to The Times!

TodaysNameIsBoring · 02/05/2024 08:41

Everyone agrees! The guy is nasty, pathetic and thinks he is clever. I hate nepotism 😡

Whoever posted that they find him attracted needs help!! 😅 He makes my skin crawl.

Yes he made it up. Did you really believe it? Even if it was true how would anyone know? I can’t imagine either party would be boasting to friends about pegging. It was total bollocks.

You will be telling me that Jeremy Clarkson is a bit of a twit, next. 😀

TheCultureHusks · 02/05/2024 08:59

First few posts nailed it, GC is the least talented member of his high achieving family by far. He’s actively untalented, which must do something very weird to the brain when tied in with an overdose of entitlement and probably expensive puffup education.

You could feel a bit sorry for him if he weren’t so nasty, but you’d have to have a character of steel to not have ended up a bitter little squirt really.

DirtyCheeseBurger · 02/05/2024 09:01

Posh folk who'd have no platform or career without Daddy's money are definitely not worth paying attention to.
ignore the odious over privileged baby.

Bloody hell. No wonder Giles not on TV any more if that’s how he behaves. One would think that someone like Giles who is in their 50s and has a public profile would be able to restrain themselves from falsely accusing other people of being pedophiles.

This was back in 2018 though, so didn’t seem to impact his TV career as that wasn’t curtailed until quite a long time afterwards!
