To be disappointed in Sting

And the rest of them that it’s taken bad publicity to cause then to take a stand. I used to think that Sting was a decent bloke (and I had a crush on him in my earlier life) but I feel very disappointed that he became a member in the first place.

And call it what it is; a sexist, misogynistic and discriminatory practice. Not an ‘anomaly’. Shame on them.

Admit women or we quit, Sting and Stephen Fry tell Garrick

In letter ahead of vote, signatories including Mark Knopfler say relations with female colleagues have been damaged

I'm not at all disappointed. He's always been an elitist cringebag. Wrote some creepy songs too. So no surprises. Although the Garrick is as much about snobbery as misogyny. After all if he is desperate for male company he could go to a working man's club no doubt.

Why can't men have men only clubs?

The world is already designed for the benefit of rich white men. They don’t need any more excuse or sanctified places to promote toxic exclusionary elitism.

Fair point

God alive, can you just imagine the fusty old atmosphere in that place.

Michael Gove sitting opposite you shoveling pie and mash into his little wet gob to the background drone of Jacob Rees Mogg pontificating on about defeating the French 200 years ago, Oliver Dowden is behind you farting into a wing back chair and, just as you're working out that you're the only one there without 2,000 acres of Wiltshire and an OBE, Sting turns up and plays the fucking lute.

Over 50% of members want women to be able to join, but it has to be two thirds. When will these dinosaurs become extinct?

😂 I have to say, it wouldn’t be my cup of tea.

Are trans women allowed to be members I wonder?
Didn't caitlin jenner hold onto 'her' membership of a men only golf club?

They can join the WI...

Wherearewegoing · 02/05/2024 16:58

No discussion about gender/trans pleeeeaaaasssseeeee! Every thread seems to end up there.

Why shouldn't they have men's only clubs

I don't see the problem

OverlyInv · 02/05/2024 18:57

I think you underestimate how utter dull these places are and are mainly just for them to go and eat and drink mainly alone before going home after work

They can get pissed with other members if they want but it's really not some nefarious place that promotes as PP 'toxic and exclusionary elitism'

It's boring and stuffy for middle age men and older who just want a quiet comfy place to sit and gather their thoughts in peace

OverlyInv · 02/05/2024 19:03

I mean having women members will liven up the place but that's not really the point of the place otherwise it wouldn't exist in the first place as a men's only club

If I were a man who went there to decompress after a very busy head fuck of a job and just wanted to read my paper in silence before going home then I'd hate for that home to intrude

You guys really don't seem to understand the need for a place like this if you have a very very time consuming stressful job where need a stop gap before going home

Like if you're a judge, barrister or DCI dealing with horrific murders all day

You need somewhere before you go home sometimes. Quiet boring and stuffy

VerlynWebbe · 02/05/2024 19:05

Pop stars and other rich people join exclusive clubs so they can socialise in peace, it's really no big deal. It's a bit strange to be 'disappointed' in something quite innocuous that someone you don't know has done. It's not like it's something dodgy or unsavoury.

OverlyInv · 02/05/2024 19:06

But yes equally if you're a female version of this then you'd need the same place to decompress

OverlyInv · 02/05/2024 19:06

There are plenty of private clubs with male and female members

I dont really understand why there cant be mens only clubs. I support women only clubs/groups?

I agree. I'd quite like a women only club (eg Soroptomists) and don't see why men can't have a men only club too.

Even though trans men and trans women might muscle their way in

I assume this is a joke? Because I can’t imagine those poor beleaguered male judges and barristers are living in cramped one bedroom flats with wailing banshee children and wives doing their heads in. And the ‘you guys really don’t seem to understand…’ wtf? Come on now.

Outwiththenorm · 30/04/2024 17:47

The point is that Joe and Tommy could be members. Sharon and Dina (trying to imagine what working class women’s names you’d come up with) Also please provide the female equivalent of this club?

No idea if there is but what's to stop someone opening one?
Plenty of gyms use the fact that they have a women only room use that as their marketing point

Working on this theory, we should ask ourselves where are all the Garrick type clubs around the country for Paramedics, A&E nurses or firefighters.

Sting, Hugh Bonneville and the chairman of the Royal Ballet School probably aren't dealing with horrific murders all day.
