To ask what day is best to have as a day off

Hello. Currently work a four day week, Fridays off. Have done for a number of years. Love having Fridays off with DS. Also start of the weekend - proper Friday feels!

DD starts school in Sept. Am considering swapping day off to a Monday, mainly for the fact that for any Monday bank holiday (at least four per year) I will be given the hours back by them being added to my annual leave allocation. Which means an extra four days off a year (I know it's not really an extra four days, just means I can take my bank holidays whenever I want).

WWYD??? Would be sad to lose having Fridays off, but feel like it would help as I'll have more leave to use in the juggle of school holidays?

I work Tuesday to Friday and it's great. Love my quiet Monday to reset after the noise and busy-ness of a family weekend. Also depending on the employer, some weeks I can swap my day off so if we were going away for a Friday to Monday weekend, I'd work Monday in lieu of Friday and save my annual leave. It stretches it that bit further then which is great with children.

Wednesday! I haven't worked a Wednesday for years and it's great. Only ever work two days in a row.

Wednesday all the way.

I agree with Monday. I found that to take Friday off I had to do extra work to get things done that were needed that week, whereas anything needed on a Monday could wait until Tuesday.
One job I had years ago had Wed off but I felt it made things very disjointed

mrsbyers · 29/04/2024 14:57

Wednesday for me , love having a midweek break

If you work part time, say 3 days a week, 8 hours per day you would get 3/5ths of the full time BHs and AL. So for each BH you get 3/5ths of 8 hours, which is 4.8 hours. But to take off the whole day on a bank holiday you have to use an additonal 3.2 hours of AL to to make it up to 8 hours. So it actually 'costs' you to take leave on Bank Holidays.

If you don't normally work on Mondays you get to use the 4.8 hours as normal annual leave. In the UK there are generally 8 bank holidays so it you have 38.4 hours which is equivalent to nearly 5 days of annual leave.

ETA: After not working on Mondays for about 15 years, I still get a small thrill on Sunday evenings that I don't have to go to work in the morning.

Edited

Yes thanks! I think I got confused but indeed not working on the Monday is the best for time off!

GoBonobo · 29/04/2024 15:51

I did Fridays to start with then changed to Mondays. Partly due to bank holiday thing (schools/nursery closed, even though work wasn’t, so needed a day off anyway, and meant I could save holiday). But also because I’d tidy up on my day off and because (now-ex) was around all weekend and quite messy, toys would all be pulled out etc, it meant by Monday the house was in a state again. If I cleaned up the mess after the weekend, it was generally tidy ish until the following weekend

Monday due to bank hols. Plus everyone is on a wind down on Friday so it's usually an easier shift. Better to have Manic Monday off IMO.

Keepsmiling2948 · 29/04/2024 15:55

I used to have Wednesdays off….loved it! Quiet day for appointments of shopping etc. Nice little midweek break.

BrieHugger · 29/04/2024 15:56

Wednesday! You never work more than two days in a row, and if it’s a bank holiday on the Monday you only need to take Tuesday as leave and you get an amazingly long weekend!

elevens24 · 29/04/2024 16:01

Monday. I did this for years and it was great. I worked for NHS and got my bank holidays prorata'd into my annualised hours, so ended up with 'extra leave'.

FarmGirl78 · 29/04/2024 16:07

I have Wednesdays off and it's FAB. Its much more a break than having a long weekend. It means Tue night is like an extra Friday too, so that's pizza and movie night.

A long weekend every weekend would be nice, but ANOTHER little mini-weekend right in the middle of the week when I need it most is even better!! Wouldn't change it for the world!

Hardbackwriter · 29/04/2024 16:09

I work Mon-Thurs but DH has Wed as his non-working day. We both think we have the best deal - I love that Thursday is my 'mega-Friday' but he says he gets both 'mini-Friday' (Tuesday) AND 'real Friday'

BendingSpoons · 29/04/2024 16:12

Check the school dates. Loads of things happen in our school on a Friday e.g. class assemblies, Inset days, sports day, fayre after school. Friday is my busiest day and it's a bit of a pain.

Disasterclass · 29/04/2024 16:13

I gave Fridays off. If it's a bank holiday Monday I tend to work the Friday instead (my work is v flexible) and save the hours for annual leave.

I tend to do a lot of the jobs on my day off, so I get things ready for the weekend, shopping, cleaning etc and then can relax on Saturday and Sunday. I know some people like a mid week day off, but I like turning my computer off on Thursday afternoon and knowing I'm not back until Monday

KlongDuplo · 29/04/2024 16:19

Ive worked a 4 day and week for 15 years. Have changed my days over that time for various different reasons, including being more available for a specific client or project.

I've had Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Friday was my least favourite - always felt like a waste. Much prefer to do practical things like grocery shop and house reset early on the week - it lasts longer!

After that, would take any mid-week day that suits the flow of your work best. Currently I'm on Mondays off.

I really enjoyed having a Tues off - get set up for the week on Monday, and then head down Wed - Fri. Bank Holiday weekends meant 4 days off. And it was really easy to take 1 extra day anytime to have a 4-day weekend.

Word of warning for Mondays off - if you plan to have school friends over for playdates after school on Mondays, remember to organise them before Monday! This always caught me out

Sunshineandpinkclouds · 29/04/2024 16:20

Definitely Friday off - it's a good day for drop off and pick up at school, people are in more of a chatty mood than a Monday and you can get to know the parents - if you want to. Also you can do after school play dates or park. After school play dates on a Monday just don't feel much fun.

Also socially I found most people who worked PT were off on a Friday so could do a coffee or lunch.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 29/04/2024 16:25

Definitely mondays off! Like you said, i get all the bank holiday hours as extra annual leave to take when i want. However i am full time compressed into 4 days so i do get the full allowance of bank hols hours

LeedsZebra90 · 29/04/2024 16:27

I've tried monday and friday and constantly feel like im playing catch up. Wednesdays are good for balance.

Beezknees · 29/04/2024 16:38

I'd prefer a Monday off if I had the choice. Mondays are always busier than Fridays

Sunnnybunny72 · 29/04/2024 16:39

Mondays. For your reason.

oldagegoth · 29/04/2024 16:42

A controversial vote for Tuesdays. Work on Monday never seems like a big deal as it's only for one day and mainly used to set up for the rest of the week. Then the Wed, Thur, Fri run is useful to get stuck into things but you're never too far from the weekend.

I'd pick Tuesdays every time 😁

Superscientist · 29/04/2024 16:47

I have Wednesdays off. I did a phased return due to sick leave and tested every option and found I couldn't work more than 2 days so it was either go down to 3 days or do 4 days and take of Wednesdays. I did the later.

For my work its not ideal as we have important meetings on a Wednesday so I sometimes have to join a meeting for an hour but get that hr back the next day.

89redballoons · 29/04/2024 16:48

I used to have Wednesdays off but had to move it to Fridays to make childcare work, as my DS's childminder doesn't work on Fridays as so many parents take Fridays off.

From a work perspective I much preferred having Wednesdays off. If there's something you don't get to by the end of Tuesday, it's not usually too much of an issue to push it to Thursday morning. If you haven't finished something by Thursday evening, it means you didn't get to it all week and you won't do it until Monday morning, so late by 3 days instead of 2 and psychologically it somehow feels even worse.

I now spend Thursdays from about 4pm handing things over to my team whereas I used to be able to kind of massage my workload better when I had Wednesdays off.

Kitkat1523 · 29/04/2024 16:57

Monday Monday Monday…..I did this when I worked 4 days….so I had 6 hours from every BH which fell on a Monday to take exactly when I wanted to….like having lots of extra annual leave ….loved it….,could never understand why people wanted Friday 🤷

But you never get a long weekend? ….I used to go away at least 2 weekends a month….having Mondays off I didn’t use any annual leave
