Child’s coughing at night

OneMellowLemonExpert · 28/04/2024 21:55

i can’t bear it, my DD(5) has the most awful cough but worse at night. It goes through me and actually feels like I’m in pain with it too.

I’ve just moved her into bed with me so I can keep a closer eye on her.

there is a little back story in that she suffers from severe croup attacks that have put her in hospital several times so that does make me more nervous

has anyone else’s child suffering with a terrible cough? Were in the East Midlands and we’ve been informed by local NHS trust that whooping cough is rife at the moment 😟

With her history, you should call NHS 24 for help or get her to the doctor in the morning.

My son coughs through the night October-April generally. Really terrible. Brown inhaler really really helps. In his case it’s ’reactive airways’ which can develop into asthma, I was told when he was a toddler but he’s 6 and I have hope he’s growing out of it!

Merryoldgoat · 28/04/2024 22:14

My sister was like this and was asthmatic.

I concur about seeing a doctor but I’d add in some antihistamine and ensure her bedroom was well vacuumed and dusted too.

fashionqueen1183 · 28/04/2024 22:15

I’ve heard of three adult men getting whooping cough recently.

My kids always get coughs worse at night. None of us get any sleep for a week when they get a cough. Once DD had one for three months and saw the nurse. Tried two different inhalers but they didn’t help and it went away in the end.

Icepop79 · 28/04/2024 22:15

Try rubbing Vicks on the soles of her feet and then put socks over it. Doesn’t always stop the nighttime cough, but can sometimes help.

There are a lot of viruses going around at the moment. Fingers crossed she gets through it soon.

SquigglePigs · 28/04/2024 22:16

DD is 5 and she started with one like this on Good Friday. Even when most of the daytime coughing stopped she was still waking with a horrible cough that took ages to settle down. She only stopped that a few days ago. It really is horrible listening to them like that Sad. Hope your DD feels better soon.

Asthma

OneMellowLemonExpert · 28/04/2024 22:19

Thank you, she is under a ENT consultant and recently had a MLTB as well as her tonsils & adenoids removed. We’ve long suspected asthma, she does have a blue inhaler but I’ve heard they the brown ones are much more effective.

up until recently she was on lanzaprasole but the ENT surgeon wanted he to come off it to see if she had anymore croup episodes (to prove one way or another that reflux was triggering her attacks)

I’m going to contact the GP first thing in the morning and hopefully they’ll see her (they usually always see kids it’s just us adults that struggle for appointments)

Yeah, I think asthma might be the culprit here. Does she sleep on her back?

She sleeps on her back and her side to be honest, probably 50:50

Window open. A must ime.. All weather's for asthmatic ds 9. Or The Fucking Coughing starts..

Dextybooboo · 28/04/2024 22:22

I feel your pain. My dd was similar with croup and quite often suffers coughs / snotty noses.

Does you child have large tonsils at all? We've recently started using benadryl allergy medicine as advised by GP and it's made a huge difference. Also really rate the vicks cool mist humidifier.

I used to do a nice steamy bath too if it wasn't croup with the asda vapour bath in.

If you think it could be related to post nasal drip saline drops could help.

I'm asthmatic and can't sleep on my back because I'll end up coughing if I get a post nasal drip.

We've just gone through this. my DD is 11 and still prone to croup. :( she also has the blue inhaler.

The only thing that helped was a hot steam humidifier in her room. But full warning, I used it that much, I've got runs of water stains down the walls now.

her cough lasted about 2 weeks at night. Still can have a bit in the day but mostly over it.

She’s just had her tonsils removed, they weren’t massive but surgeon thought removing them might help with the croup.

they didn’t a MLTB and found that the muscle surrounding her oesophagus was a bit looser than they would have expected so maybe reflux is the trigger? Last time she had an attack she had to be given adrenaline, it was just awful

I’ve got one of those too, DH hates it as he’s convinced we’ll get damp/mould through using it so much

croup is just awful isn’t it

Dd1 coughs at night, gp made us wait until she was over 5 before agreeing that yes it is likely to be asthma gave her a blue inhaler, works a treat 😊

Monwmum · 28/04/2024 22:35

My son had terrible croup when he was younger and the thing that really helped was putting our electric vegetable steamer in his room with water in obviously and basically steaming the room.

It worked wonders. Good luck x

Mercury2702 · 28/04/2024 22:38

This is also how my DS8 was diagnosed with asthma as it was explained their airway is squashed down even more at night when asthmatic so they said night time coughing is a dead giveaway

Yes - I have a Vicks vapouriser and it’s great.

Merryoldgoat · 28/04/2024 22:57

They do tend to outgrow croup @OneMellowLemonExpert - my little boy required regular hospital visits - 3 times one winter. One day he got the horrid snot that always pre-empted a visit and no croup and never had it since.

I know you still need to sort the coughing but the croup does stop ❤️

Katela18 · 29/04/2024 08:54

My DD 4 is exactly like this and has just been diagnosed with asthma 3 months ago. We have started brown inhaler and are now seeing a big difference (takes time to work).

I think she was diagnosed quite early, but she was prem so was already under the paeds consultant. Definitely worth asking your gp

OneMellowLemonExpert · 01/05/2024 21:36

Thank you everyone, she is doing much better now. She is still coughing but nowhere near as much.

she is under a respiratory consultant for her severe croup so I’m contacting him to see if we can investigate possible asthma
