It is pretty ugh and irrelevant

GoingRoundThatBlockAgain · 28/04/2024 15:15

You’re right, OP, this gratuitous everyday sexism should have died a death by now. I agree with @HelloWorld68, it’s sad that other PP don’t see the problem.

And while I appreciate that Dave’sDodgyDeals on eBay is hardly Ogilvy, it is against advertising standards to use women’s bodies in this way:

https://www.asa.org.uk/advice-online/offence-nudity.html#:~:text=The%20use%20of%20nudity%20in,appear%20in%20targeted%20media%20only.

Offence: Nudity

@Soubriquet "Because it’s just a body. I don’t find it sexual at all."

Do you see nothing wrong with sexualised images of women being used in advertising?

@penjil it might surprise you to know that people can be concerned about lots of different things.

BigFatPuddingMonster · 28/04/2024 15:17

It saddens me to think that (presumably) women here replying to the OP think she's a 'pearl clutcher' and not actually seeing the ebay ad as being hugely misogynistic. I'm with you, OP. The ad is completely inappropriate.

ReallyUAreAnElegantChap · 28/04/2024 15:21

@MichaelatheMechanic would you reply to ebay with the appropriate links as added by other posters above?

It is misogyny and so disappointing to see people, especially women, claim there is nothing wrong with it.

And yes, I feel the same when men are objectified as well, but the difference is history

Samlewis96 · 28/04/2024 15:21

Desperatelyneedabreak · 28/04/2024 14:56

It's weird but I wouldn't care if I saw it I wouldn't even register it tbh.

Got to say the same. I really couldn't get excited about this

PracticallyPerfectedIt · 28/04/2024 15:31

Soubriquet · 28/04/2024 15:04

Because it’s just a body. I don’t find it sexual at all.

Oh give over

What's the purpose of it, then, if not for titillation? It's hardly an instructional photo is it.

Celticliving · 28/04/2024 15:35

Maybe they want us to 'crack' the safe.

I'll also get my coat.

HelloWorld68 · 28/04/2024 15:36

For PPs who see nothing wrong with that ad, these 2 attached pictures are just a couple off examples of the shit we had to grow up with and why we won't accept it slipping back to those times. And why we keep fighting!! And why we keep reporting!

There's a reason that ads like the eBay one aren't allowed. I'm flabbergasted that some posters can't see this! And sad, very sad.

To think the photo on this eBay listing is inappropriate?

This may be news to you but the rest of us are able to think about more than one thing at a time and I less I've missed a new rule it's not compulsory to start threads on the basis that you are a single issue person

chaticat · 28/04/2024 15:38

What a bizarre ad

SerendipityJane · 28/04/2024 16:07

MichaelatheMechanic · 28/04/2024 12:59

Does that make it right then?

Perhaps I should strip off when I take the photos of the mirror I'm going list?

I strongly advise you not to google "reflectoporn"

Moveoverdarlin · 28/04/2024 16:12

Doesn’t bother me in the slightest. Sorry.

Sheknowsaboutme · 28/04/2024 16:25

Im old enough to remember boobs on the cardboard of peanut packs hanging in bars.

not at all bothered. Nothing much offends ne, im made of sterner stuff.

CurlewKate · 28/04/2024 16:27

It must be exhausting to be so professionally unoffended all the time....

crumbledog · 28/04/2024 16:30

Because it’s just a body. I don’t find it sexual at all.

Be interested to know what you do find sexual.

orchiddottyback · 28/04/2024 16:30

@MichaelatheMechanic So do you usually dislike the way foreign and eastern countries cultures and sales practices differ from your own. Do you generally dislike the chinese cultural norms ect, because that is quite a xenephobic display there.

You obviously spent long enough on that ebay listing to reaslise they were a chinese seller, listing like most eastern sellers do on auction and sales sites like Ali express, Yahoo auctions, Mercari, Rakuten Rakuma, ect. That is what global selling is like, so maybe rather than trying to enforce your xenphobic views and western values on to eastern countries and listing practrices you dont like, you should do like most other normal buyers do and scroll on by if you dont like it.

for me I see no issue in that listing. Its not for me to force my values upon them. That add is hurting no one its pretty common practice on most world wide sales sites.

Boomer55 · 28/04/2024 16:32

Publicity via social media. It’s worked.🙄

You think the sexualisation and objectification of women's bodies in advertising is fine, do you?

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 28/04/2024 16:52

Bumblebeeinatree · 28/04/2024 13:20

I think it probably breaches advertising guidelines of sexualising women. I thought I read somewhere that decapitating women in an advert like that and just showing the skimpily clad body was a bit dodgy for adverts.

Decapitating women in adverts is definitely frowned on

Hateam · 28/04/2024 16:59

It's a very effective ad.

CurlewKate · 28/04/2024 16:59

@orchiddottyback "So do you usually dislike the way foreign and eastern countries cultures and sales practices differ from your own. Do you generally dislike the chinese cultural norms ect, because that is quite a xenephobic display there."

Wow. The lengths some people will go to excuse blatant misogyny. "Silence, woman. Don't you realise you're being racist?"

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 28/04/2024 16:59

And of course we get the posters "disappointed" that some of us just don't see the issue because we should fight the crusade of women...
Like we are womening wrong

Antibetty · 28/04/2024 17:00

I want that a*se

NeverDropYourMooncup · 28/04/2024 17:04

I presume it's a way to get their assumed customer base - men - to stop and read their listing instead one with just ordinary, boring, safes that can also be broken into very easily due to the key option.
