To ask for ideas of fun/bizarre/unusual things I could do before I turn 40!

As the title suggests, in order to celebrate approaching 40, I want to make sure I'm living and doing stuff rather than just plodding through life washing, cooking and working.
So please could you hit me with ideas of things I could include? I have some already, some are expensive, some time consuming, some free and easy. I want a whole mix!
An example of ideas so far are things like
Pottery wheel lesson
Learn BSL
Listen to the dawn chorus
Stay a night in a ludicrously posh hotel
Indoor skydiving
Watch a sunrise on a beach
Run a 5K for charity
Learn to crotchet.

But I would love to hear some more!

I’ve always fancied going to a nudist beach because by the time you’re a bikini might as well be naked. I wonder what it’s like? Lots of ideas of wizened men in Sand dunes. 😫

Dareisayiseethesunshine · 28/04/2024 12:49

Go to Mull of you haven't already.
Llama trekking..

CapaciousHag · 28/04/2024 12:50

Hmm … I’ve done about 35 of the things listed so far - without in any way thinking of them as part of a bucket list; they just happened along. And now something must be missing from my brain because other than buying nice clothes and reading about a million books there isn’t really anything I can think of to put on a list. (I have some professional ambitions but not sure they’d count.)

I do think bucket lists are weird - but it seems reasonable to want to escape the monotony of day to day life.

Growing your own food might make the biggest long term difference to your life as it really changes your perception of and attitude towards mass produced food.

Titsywoo · 28/04/2024 12:54

I'm currently working through a list of 50 thinhs before I turn 50. I'm 45 so working through it. My kids are adults now so it's lovely doing things just for me. Here's some I can think of off the top of my head:-

Walking the North Downs Way - started this
See Pink in concert - got tickets for June
Go to Skomer Island to see the puffins
Do belly dancing lessons
Make a dress
Cook a new recipe once a month
Get makeup lesson
Go to a burlesque show
Start doing yoga
Start weight training

@ssd
Oh yes, I definitely plan to keep doing stuff beyond 40, this is just a way of getting out of a bit of a funk of monotony where my life revolves around work, housework and raising a family. I want to make sure myself and my family are living and experiencing stuff together and to show my daughters that life is for the taking and that pushing yourself outside your comfort zone is often a wonderful thing! Having sadly had a couple of friends either desperately poorly or not live to see 40, I am just aware what a privilege life is and I want to make the most of it 🙃

I'm already well beyond 40 and still have a bucket list!

Travel is my thing and have done all the long hauls I ever wanted to do.

So next up is to cross off every single country in Europe that I haven't been to yet. I've been to about 7 already but there are some intriguing ones to the East, post Communist countries which look interesting. I'm going to do it in chunks, maybe two or three in the same (ish) region together.

I'm plotting it out already! Hope I stay well and mobile enough to do it....

softslicedwhite · 28/04/2024 13:04

This thread is so weird. Why do you need to do all those things before you turn 40? I'm sure you can manage a pottery wheel at 41, or even 71, or even 81.

Gotabadfeelingaboutthis · 28/04/2024 13:06

@softslicedwhite why are you being needlessly rude and dismissive? I didnt ask or need anyones permission. Read my last update if you are actually interested in why and have something useful to add otherwise, feel free to leave the thread 🙄

It is not weird, it is fun! why not have a few new goals in life, and a deadline to try and meet them

softslicedwhite · 28/04/2024 13:07

Genuinely wondering why you feel you need to throw a pot before you turn 40.

Gotabadfeelingaboutthis · 28/04/2024 13:08

@softslicedwhite then read the thread 🤷 I'd love some more suggestions if you have any.

Why are you asking strangers what you should do? If you wanted to do something then you’d already have the answer to your querie.
Some random stranger’s idea of a ‘bucket list’ type thing is a wierd way to enjoy your 40th.
Just go out & get rat arsed…stock upon paracetamol the day before.

Gotabadfeelingaboutthis · 28/04/2024 13:13

@Gall10
Because part of the point is to push myself out of my comfort zone and try new things I may not have thought of/come across before.
I find sharing ideas with others inspiring and interesting.

Absolutely. Mine isn't a bucket list as such but it is so easy to end up at 70 having just lived your normal day to day life then not have the time or energy to do all the things you fancied but kept putting off as you were 'busy'. Having a list just keeps reminding me to do those fun things I always wanted to do! I think it is sensible not weird. There is always a joy sponge on these threads!

Why are you on MN if you are not interested in the opinions of random strangers? Grin

Yes, you've articulated this perfectly. All of these reasons are exactly why - it's a goal, a focus to ensure life doesn't just pass me by.

Not just watch sunrise on a beach, but do so alone. Swim in the sea alone.

Watch sunrise from a mountain top, or a high hill. Camp there overnight, or hike up in the pre-dawn.

Go skinny-dipping.

Go wild swimming.

Say "No" to a request from someone with the authority to tell you to do so.

Teach someone a skill you have.

Learn a skill you don't have.

Sing in public.

Sing a solo in public.

Get an adult kick-scooter and use it.

Play on the swings and slides.

Do a 'Jonny' and squirt whipped cream straight into your mouth (Friday Night Dinner). Extra points for sitting on the kitchen counter while you do so.

Ask things I have done since I turned 40. Actually, some I had done before, but a very long time before. Some were terrifying, some exhilarating, all wonderfully liberating.

PermanentTemporary · 28/04/2024 13:23

Swim in a Lake District lake - I have a vague idea of swimming in every one, but I've done 3 and may not get much further... Wastwater was the most beautiful.

See the Northern Lights
Grow something edible from seed
Write down your best recipe/adaptation
Take Grade 1 in a new musical instrument
Learn a new language and go somewhere to speak it
Read the book you've never managed to read ( I finally read Midnight's Children a couple of years ago and it's as good as its reputation)

Dilbertian · 28/04/2024 13:25

softslicedwhite · 28/04/2024 13:07

Because throwing pots is wonderful fun. Plus you get to keep the pot, and even use it.

katscamel · 28/04/2024 13:26

Stargazing, I have a friend with a set up in Yorkshire and looks amazing. I have camped under the stars but never with someone that knows what's what.
Jewellery making....not creative or artistic at all but do love jewellery
A proper hamam in Istanbul...always a favourite
Abseiling down ....somewhere
Water skiing
Study something just because it'd be interesting (just starting a freebie OU course on earthquakes)

mitogoshi · 28/04/2024 13:28

Book yourself a hotel at charmouth and go fossil hunting, I've never failed to find one!

@TheExclusiveSandwich

I recommend Fuerteventura for your wish, stayed at Magic Life which is split between Brits and Germans particularly (actually plenty of other nationalities but the bulk) and I has a nudist pool, separate and fenced off plus the beach is come as you like, most are in costumes but plenty did swim naked, very freeing!

Ghostbasket · 28/04/2024 13:36

Hot air balloon ride?
see a tiger in the wild
do a chin up is one of mine 😂

eise · 28/04/2024 13:48

GreenIcy · 28/04/2024 12:22

Learn a new language
Learn to juggle
Go on a silent retreat
Swim at midnight in the sea on a full moon
Ride a cross country course on horseback

Do the swimming last

OssieShowman · 28/04/2024 13:51

Hot Air Ballon is great
Escape Room
