If someone liked watching Eastenders most nights, would this put you off dating them?

OP posts:
Katemax82 · 26/04/2024 21:36

I watch it...much to my husbands disgust

pictoosh · 26/04/2024 21:47

Is he happy to miss it and watch the omnibus?

I think this is the crucial thing about soaps...not that it's low brow (so what? I come on here to read a bunch of women snipe at each other on the regular) but that some viewers get salty about not watching it. I suppose that could get old.

I once instructed a barrister based on the fact their profile said they liked red wine and Brookside (back in the day).

Often people with high powered jobs watch something on TV which helps them completely switch off and that they don't need brainpower to watch.

Is it something particular about EastEnders you find so offensive or can we insert any soap/reality tv/TV programmes yo consider beneath you?

My barrister friend loves to watch dogshit trash films. Like budget versions of Stepbrothers type thing.

When I've tried suggesting we watch something more intellectual, he reacts like I've asked if we can go out and throw tin cans at pigeons.

TwattyMcFuckFace · 26/04/2024 21:54

No, but if I was him and I knew you started a thread like this, that'd certainly put me off.

It's too weird.

OH loves Emmerdale mainly because he fancies Charity Dingle!!. All other soaps are crap according to him.

MillshakePickle · 26/04/2024 22:26

Yes, it would completely put me off. I can't stand watching TV beyond the odd box set very occasionally. A soap daily is far too much of a commitment. Even if it was catching up on the weekend.

curiositykilledthiscat · 26/04/2024 22:32

No, it's only a TV show. Grow up.

Assuming he wouldn't have to sit on your lap to watch it, what would it have to do with you?

I assume he would watch it in his own time... much like he would also be working, seeing family and friends etc.

WickerMam · 26/04/2024 22:48

It would be a deal breaker for me - it's such a time commitment. I wouldn't want to date someone who watched TV every night. If they watched them all in one go at the weekend, that might be different.

She wrote on Mumsnet on Friday night.

Saralouhe · 26/04/2024 22:55

I wouldn't put me off him because he watches them but it would put me off because if we spent more time together he would probably want to watch them with me around and I fucking hate soaps.

He can literally watch it anytime!!

@thisleiekg sounds like you are not that into him and you're looking for an excuse!

Nah there's a Spoiler Thread for Eastenders on Telly Addicts ( he can thank me later )

Actuallly my DH thinks he bloody writes it , he predicts so much of what will happen Blush

GrandTheftWalrus · 26/04/2024 23:05

Haha my dh says he doesn't watch the soaps but when I'm watching he's asking what's happening.

Zapss · 26/04/2024 23:06

I'd seriously question his taste!

Brookside is a whole other matter, though 😂

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 26/04/2024 23:16

No because I watch it too. I have done since I was a child. I know it’s not considered high quality television but I enjoy it and feel a weird sense of loyalty to it from watching it for so long. My mum has watched it since the first episode and it was always on at home so I got invested when I was about 7. My DH claims to not like it and says he only watches it for me. But I’ve caught him catching up on episodes he’s missed when I’m not even there. Fortunately neither of us are looking to date anyone new so we don’t really care if it puts people off us.

No, they heard you stopped watching and have only shown reruns from ‘85-93 on repeat since then. Somehow, (spoiler alert) Dirty Den presenting those divorce papers on Christmas Day is still a shocking twist even on its 467th rerelease….

As for the op, honestly I don’t see what the bother is. As long as he’s not one of these people who needs to watch their show at the cost of all other activities, what does it matter? My ex didn’t think he was into many shows I enjoyed, but after given some things a go he really got fully into a couple. Friends is the biggest example, he absolutely trashed it until I had a binge one day…

WimpoleHat · 26/04/2024 23:21

Does he talk about it all the time (like the characters are
real people)? Is that his only/main interest and hobby? Is that time sacrosanct and you can’t ever go out at x time on a Tuesday? If so, that would put me off. But if it’s just something he likes to watch in the gym/in the train/in his downtime moments, I can’t see why it’s a problem any more than, say, liking football. Wouldn’t bother me.

Northernparent68 · 26/04/2024 23:22

The real question is should he go out with someone so intolerant

brunettemic · 26/04/2024 23:24

Well…what do you like to watch?
