To not hand notice in until I see the new job contract?

I've been offered a job in writing with the position, salary and start time outlined.

I don't know any of the other t&cs, pension, holidays etc

They have said they understand I'll need a few days to speak to my manager. In the next breath that they will send the contract within a few days.

AIBU to tell them I'll give notice once I have the contract?

My last job wouldn't give a contract until the probation period was completed. I stayed 4 months then gave a week notice, and they wanted a minimum month, I pointed out that if they want any notice, then they need to give a contract, and I was considerate of giving a week. New job gave a contract before I started. Been there a couple of years now.

That's illegal! Good on you for standing your ground.

You don't usually issue a contract until the first day of work, before that you should get an offer letter with all the main details of the role. If there's anything you particularly want to know then ask and they'll tell you but I wouldn't produce a contract at this stage 🤷‍♀️

@MFF2010 what on earth kind of industry / level of role is that?

@Weighnow - If an employer doesn't give you a contract before you start working for them, that isn't due to it being "impractical" - it's a sign that their HR processes are shit or overstretched.

@MFF2010 - Of course you usually get a contract before your first day of work! What a bizarre thing to say.

I haven't always waited for a contract, but my last but one job change got a bit hairy and I got worried during my notice period. All worked out ok in the end but I was far more cautious at the next job change and did make sure I had a contract in place with everything we'd agreed before handing in notice - role, salary, working hours etc.

I'd definitely want confirmation on things like working hours, holiday entitlement and pension as you could be in for an unpleasant surprise.

Glad they're sending you what you need on Monday. Hope it's all as expected :)

Def don't hand in your notice until you have a contract. I was the only applicant for an internal job. Spent 4 months negotiating terms. The manager was drawing up the contract on Friday and a company wide hiring freeze kicked in on Monday. The job offer is on hold. Sad and annoyed as I am, I recognize that it would have been much worse if I didn't have my current job.
