To think selling baby clothes on vinted isn't worth it?

Mostly selling supermarket branded clothes, so don't know if that's the problem.

Have tried the trick of putting it on holiday mode for a week, which didn't work. Photos are all good, have tried spotlighting the wardrobe. Have also tried selling individually for £1 each or selling as a bundle of same size. Barely anything sells! Bundle offers are all set to 50% for 3 items...Where on earth am I going wrong?

Are there just too many baby clothes on vinted?

Personally I'm more likely to buy brands like JL, Jojo, frugi etc second hand has you feel like you are saving money. But second hand supermarket I'm always put off as what you buy it for second hand is closer the the retail price.

Also baby/child clothes just swamp these websites, it's hard to see the wood through the trees.

airlinenotpaying · 25/04/2024 07:44

I managed to sell 5 brand new vests from next, for £4. Think they were about £15 originally

Poppalina37 · 25/04/2024 07:47

What's your username x I buy all my babies clothes from there x

Createcomet · 25/04/2024 07:50

Thanks everyone! I think maybe I might just continue to list stuff like Ewan the Dream sheep, and maybe toys?! But maybe they're better for Facebook?! And just give up on the baby clothes. I might try and start bagging stuff up for bin/charity shop/sell today if the kids will be compliant

You make very little. I sold big 10 item bundles on eBay for like £2.99 plus postage, and eBay took fees from that so it was about £2, not worth the trip to the post office! John Lewis etc stuff might go for £4-£5 for one item though.

ClonedSquare · 25/04/2024 07:51

I've only found it worth it for items from "posh" brands. Even then, you're still looking at under £5 an item. Jojo Maman Bebe is the one that sells best for me as it's a middle ground- people want the brand but it still sells cheap.

For supermarket or High Street stuff, I've always had to put it on as a bundle to get anyone to buy. So 3 or 4 t shirts or sleepsuits for a fiver or something.

The problem is the postage, by the time you’ve added that, might as well buy new or local charity shop. Unless a big bundle

Exactly this. Let's take your example of £1 for three items, but with your bundle discount. That takes it to £1.50 for three items. Then they have the Vinted fee of maybe 80p, plus £3 postage. £5.30 in total for three second hand items isn't usually worth it, especially supermarket brands.

Gowlett · 25/04/2024 07:57

I wouldn’t look online for things like that. I’d pick up baby items in the supermarket, when I see them. Or something good like a nice coat / jumper in a charity shop, when I pop in. Anyone you pass them on to? Most of my kid’s clothes are hand-me-downs.

BodyKeepingScore · 25/04/2024 07:58

On Vinted people tend to look for branded items rather than supermarket names, it's hard to make money even on the bigger brands tbh, people don't want to pay very much.

elm26 · 25/04/2024 08:06

Love Vinted for buying but not selling. I've recently got my daughter (11 months) 3 M&S sun safe protection swimsuits all brand new with tags on for our holiday for £4 each. Some beautiful summer dresses with tags on for £2/£3 each and myself some H&M sandals brand new for £5. I've tried to sell DD's old clothes (ones that were still immaculate) but ended up taking them to charity shop.

RosiePH · 25/04/2024 08:09

It’s probably not worth selling the supermarket and cheaper brands on there. It’s the postage and buyer fee that adds up and can quickly make an item cost most then buying brand new.

I only look at brands like The White Company and Jo Jo Maman Bebe, occasionally John Lewis, Mamas and Papas or M&S, which are mid-range to begin with.

I saw a cute little cardigan from M&S but the seller wanted £8 for it and with the postage (£2.95) and the Vinted fee of around £1 it made the item just as expensive as buying it new in M&S. I think it sells for £12 in store. Offered the seller £5 but she declined and said she only does bundle discounts. Which was a measly 5% off when buying 3 of her items, all of which were basically priced just under full retail price but all were used. Really wasn’t worth it, so I bought new. I got the feeling she might be a business seller looking at the sheer volume of sales though.

If you’ve got big bundles you really want to sell, I would try a car boot sale or even FB marketplace where someone can just collect. If it’s all good condition and you don’t need to sell it, you could try donating to a baby bank?

BigBadBarri · 25/04/2024 08:13

I’ve just had a look and some of the pricing is crazy. £5 for second hand Primark shorts?!

Yes this. It is only worth it for expensive or branded items.
As a buyer, I prefer to make my own bundles and I buy specific brands I can't find in the UK or expensive. If I get some supermarket stuff, it will usually be bundled with other items.

Habe you tried "nearly new" sales near you or marketplace ?

theeyeofdoe · 25/04/2024 08:20

I sell quite a lot on vinted, but take supermarket brands to the charity shop.

TheDandyLion · 25/04/2024 08:24

Nobody is searching for a supermarket brand so your listing will get lost in the sea of 'babygrow' or 'red trousers 3-4mths'.

Take down your listing and put it back up again so Vinted will push up the new listings in people's feed.

Thefallout · 25/04/2024 08:27

I sell loads on there! Only put each item on for 1/2 pounds. It's not much but it all adds up. I made £20 last month and used it to buy a new coat for my little one.
Put lots of clear photos on and build up good reviews. I find sets of sleepsuits or vests sell really well.

Coffeewiththatcake · 25/04/2024 08:29

I've had quite a bit of luck selling baby clothes. I do it in batches once my son outgrows them and tend to make a lump sum. Last time I made close to £100 and treated him to a few nice bits that I might not otherwise have bought.

Supermarket clothes usually need to be priced at £1 or in a bundle. Even then I find buyers will bundle them in with other things. Clothes from next, JoJo, M&S and joules sell much better and for slightly higher prices.

That being said, I have favourited then missed out on supermarket clothes BNWT so they do sell. I've only considered items BNWT priced about £2 because after fees, I'd rather just buy that stuff full price. There are so many people on Vinted that use a price point close to what you could buy the item in store, in which case I'd rather buy the item from a shop to get the benefit of a refund policy and no risk that the clothes come smelling bad or in a condition not clear from photos (I've had a couple of disappointments on that front).

If you're selling coats, perhaps consider taking them down and reposting later in the year. I tend to buy for the season ahead so wouldn't consider a coat now but come August/September might be thinking ahead about that.

Thefallout · 25/04/2024 08:29

And I don't think it's to do with being supermarket brands. I've sold Tesco sleepsuits on there before that went almost instantly! Whereas John Lewis stuff rarely sells. Weird.

APurpleSquirrel · 25/04/2024 08:30

I tend to sell bundles on FB - but we're talking 60-100 items in one bundle including things like John Lewis, Boden etc as well as TU etc. usually sell for between £20-£40 depending on size/amount & usually go. Occasionally I'll split them into Summer/Winter bundles too.

Triangulasaurus · 25/04/2024 08:42

Agree it's the postage. I often try to buy kids stuff off vinted. Then by the time the postage is added on, I may as well buy it new. I've given up trying now unless it's, for example, a NEXT coat for £3 and the postage shifts it up to £6. That's why the branded stuff sells better. But it's hardly worth the effort!

LittleBooThang · 25/04/2024 08:45

Createcomet · 25/04/2024 07:24

Weirdly, some of it has has 0 views so for some reason. Don't know if I've been dropped down the algorithm because I've previously promoted it and now it's not promoted any more 🤷‍♀️

No. You’ll have been “dropped from the algorithm” because you aren’t posting anything new.

If you post loads of things and then nothing, you won’t have any new views because the NEW stuff is what Vinted promotes.

So if you want to sell, you have to do little and often.

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 25/04/2024 09:09

I sold the baby clothes on facebook marketplace. Each age bundle had everything in that size for £20. Majority supermarket, but also other brands. Meant we got £80 for the first year of clothes, then diminishing returns after that. Stopped being worth it once they started school, as had fewer non-uniform clothes and more damaged.

I don’t have a baby but sell a lot of kids clothes. Popular brands like fatface, Boden sell really fast but supermarket things do sell as well.

I found selling items separately sold them faster but listing the same age/ type/ season clothing at the same time helps as people make their own bundles. Recently made £35 from selling supermarket items at £1 each.

Also are the photos clear as I would only buy really good condition clothes. I noticed recently that people are selling items with stains for a couple of quid when they should’ve of been binned

I also only list in season clothing.

When my child was younger I sold on Facebook through baby selling pages and got a lot of interest on there.

I also list for a bit more then I want at first then reduce when I have a couple of likes. Sometimes the items go for more then I originally wanted as I listed 50- £1 more.

Where I live, people literally give children's clothes away by the bagful.
