Finders Keepers?? AirPods

DS (12) recently found some AirPods (don’t know if they are official) on a beach walk with DH and I. DH and I have now had a big fall out over what DS should do with turn. DH told DS they are his to keep and “quick, put them in your pocket before anyone sees!” I told him he should hand them in and that they are not his to keep. DH called me naive, a “nerd” a wimp etc for wanting to do that. I tried telling our son to imagine if he lost something valuable, he would want it back. DH said that’s not how the world works, anyone could come along and lie and claim them.

I tried again telling our son that the right thing to do is to hand in anything you find but I was then made out that I was “upsetting DS” and being “a misery”

We were meant to take DS out for a meal but the atmosphere was so awful that we came straight home. I ruined everything apparently 🙄

So AIBU?! I know I am not but apparently I am now the bad guy for ruining the evening. So what the hell do you do when one parent tries to teach right from wrong and the other just tramples all over it and fights you all the way?!

Most people would post a found post on local facebook groups.

lucindasspunkyfunkyvoice · 24/04/2024 18:09

Airpods aren't fitted with a gps tracker

I think it's pretty easy to reset them

Anyway, perhaps try and reunite with owner. Facebook post?

If nobody claims, they're yours

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/04/2024 18:07

I am not very techno savy

If they are trackable like iPhones why didn't the owner track them and go to the beach ?

Won’t show if they’re run out battery.

As soon as they are charged, they’ll show.

Bit embarrassing if someone has taken them 50 miles, clearly intending on stealing. Owner can report to police. Most of time they’ll do nothing but…

Good! I really hope they do turn up at our house looking for them! He can deal with whoever turns up!

Good for you OP, I'd be hoping the same. Hopefully the crushing embarrassment of being caught out as a thief will end his arrogance. Of course DS is on his side, he wants to keep the airpods!

OhmygodDont · 24/04/2024 18:11

Yes if they are official AirPods they can be tracked worldwide even if separated.

If they are not AirPods your dh started an argument over £10 knockoffs. Tho I do like my cheapo ones

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 24/04/2024 18:12

12 is such an impressionable age for this sort of thing. I'm on your side and think your DH is a bit of a prick for the lesson he's teaching your son

Tessisme · 24/04/2024 18:13

Morals aside, there is NOTHING that would induce me to place something in my ear holes that had been plugged in someone else's ear holes. No amount of antibacterial spray. Not even a fucking flame thrower would clean those bastards sufficiently for me.

THANK YOU! Absolutely agree.

Scarletttulips · 24/04/2024 18:15

They can also be deactivated or reported as lost so he won’t be able to use them anyway/

Hwory · 24/04/2024 18:16

My AirPods have the ability to play a bell ringing sound (which is very loud if they’re in your ear) from my iPhone. If I could see someone’s taken them to their house you betcha I’d be activating it over and over again.

whistleblower99 · 24/04/2024 18:16

AirPods cannot be removed from find my IPhone of the original account holder so even if they can use them - they actual owner can locate them.

ImNotAPanda · 24/04/2024 18:16

Worldwide traced. I’d buy them a charger so they get plugged in and they come and get them.

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/04/2024 19:22

Thanks for explaining

So hopefully if ever lose something apple then or someone finds it and plugs in then owner can find the finder as such

OhmygodDont · 24/04/2024 19:24

Doesn’t even have to be charged a lot of the time these days. Unless weeks dead they all have a little bit of charge tapped in them.

OhmygodDont · 24/04/2024 19:25

But yes I can go onto the family part of my phone and it pin points each of my children’s phone to a numbered house address or their schools when at school etc. shows them moving speedily down the road when in a car.

PoppyJM · 24/04/2024 19:26

They can be traced anywhere.

what a foolish twat your dh is.

the owner will be able to see your home location where his/her AirPods have been taken, following the theft your dh has orchestrated.

YeahComeOnThen · 24/04/2024 19:28

OldTinHat · 24/04/2024 17:50

As PP said, they will no doubt be tracked.

You are correct. Hand them in ASAP before you get a knock on the door.

@UnlimitedCake
@OldTinHat

ehere exactly would you hand them in? It's not like there's a police station on every street corner, or even in every village!

DrJoanAllenby · 24/04/2024 19:29

What a disgusting role model your husband is.

I hope they get tracked and some big geezer knocks on your door and takes your feeble husband by the ear and has a 'word' with him.

YeahComeOnThen · 24/04/2024 19:31

Hwory · 24/04/2024 18:16

@Hwory why? If YOU. Lost them, it's up to YOU to go & get them . It's not their responsibility nor can they find your location.

if you did that instead of coming to get them, you'd soon find out how waterproof they are!!

duende · 24/04/2024 19:39

YADNBU.
a horrible attitude on behalf of your DH. Ask your DS to imagine a society where everyone thinks and acts as his dad. :(

Flubadubba · 24/04/2024 19:41

Are they actually Apple Airport? If so, they are trackable. If not Apple, then they may not be.

PineappleTime · 24/04/2024 19:44

My DS left his at the gym and they never turned up. He was so upset that someone would just find and keep them. It's a bit easier at a gym to hand them in to lost property but as they never showed up on find my we have to assume they were wiped and added to someone else's Apple ID. He should charge them up so the person can find them (you can find them anywhere in the world!) and try to track them down.

PineappleTime · 24/04/2024 19:46

Everyone talking about tracking them you know they can only be tracked if they are connected and charged? And if they are connected to a new Apple ID they won't be traceable any more? It's very easy to steal AirPods.

JMW2024 · 24/04/2024 19:51

Someone stole / found my daughter's AirPods (she had them 2 months) (she's 12) and she was devastated.

We tried tracking them & the person had took them off her find my iPhone and loaded them onto theirs - we never found them.
She was gutted. And so was I - that was a lot of money to loose.

He should attempt to find the person who's they are imo

IAmThe1AndOnly · 24/04/2024 19:57

Your DH is in the wrong.

But it’s not true that they can be tracked. It takes 30 seconds to reset them, after which they are no longer trackable.
