DIL birthday prezzy

Paperdolly · 24/04/2024 13:26

If your MIL was buying you a prezzy for your birthday on a limited budget (£30) what would you like? I’m totally lost as to what to buy her and it’s imminent. 😱. AIBU just to put cash in her card?

Local massage/beauty/hairdressers voucher

Needmorelego · 24/04/2024 17:31

@YeahComeOnThen I want some of the Animal Crossing sets 🙂

ghostyslovesheets · 24/04/2024 17:34

I'm always happy with fancy shower gel, nice body lotion, a decent candle or a bottle of Fizz (not prosecco) - these tend to be the kids go to presents for me!

@Needmorelego

im trying to justify buying the telephone box.

id love the gringots one! My Mum is the only one who would spend that much on me but I can imagine her face if I asked for Lego 💕🤣She gave me money for my birthday and said 'thought you might like to treat yourself to some clothes'🤣🤣🤣

Get the Lego. None of my adult kids have partners so buying for in-laws not an issue but they do all contribute to getting me Lego for birthdays and Christmas. I'm 66 and obsessed I have 18 sets plus Christmas bits. My windowsill looks like a car park.

A bottle of my favourite wine and come and babysit for me so I can go out with DP without the kids.

Yes, or a voucher or cash! Please no socks or sodding candles!

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 24/04/2024 17:37

My MIL does cash every birthday and Xmas - I can get myself something nice and we are all happy 😊

Youdontevengohere · 24/04/2024 17:38

It’s irreverent what we’d like, we aren’t your DIL! What sort of things does she like?

Lampslights · 24/04/2024 17:38

John Lewis vouchers.

some lovely cashmere socks.

nothing smelly unless you know she likes it.

nothing from bayliss and Harding.

This is where people differ so much! Shower gel, body lotion or a candle would be a massive no from me! And a bottle of something is what I’d give to a neighbour or someone I don’t know well.

Houseplantmad · 24/04/2024 17:40

A manicure voucher. M&S or John Lewis voucher. Some Neom products or This Works products.

Agree, a bottle of something is what I buy at the supermarket, and I’d be embarassed at being bunged 30 quid in an envelope. So I think it depends on the dil level of income. If she would appreciate 30 quid then give her the cash. Otherwise vouchers . And not shower gel or smellies unless she knows she likes it.

piechipsgravy · 24/04/2024 17:41

I always ask my MIL for a gift voucher for where I get my nails done so I can get a manicure for free.

Mumoftwo1312 · 24/04/2024 17:42

I'm also in the hate-candles camp. My lovely MIL is so nice and was gifting me candles for years until she helped us move house once and found a basket full of unused candles...oops! She took a few of them back and I felt a bit bad.

I then realised she gives them to me because she herself likes them, so I gift her nice candles now.

So the moral (I guess) is to observe what she gives as gifts to people - that's probably the kind of stuff she'd like to receive herself

Porageeater · 24/04/2024 17:48

I also would not thank you for candles or toiletries. I would like a Boots voucher where I could choose my own things. Cash is good but voucher better because I just end up giving cash to dd.

WhereIsMyLight · 24/04/2024 17:49

For me, cash has the potential to just be spent on life, rather than something for my birthday. Unless I am specifically saving up for something bigger. A voucher is good but only for places you actually shop at. I don’t like love2shop and those type of vouchers because I feel like the person doesn’t know me. MIL has got me vouchers for a clothes shop she knows I like, craft shop and Amazon for books. She also usually sends some red wine and chocolate which is always appreciated too.

Yes this is why I prefer vouchers, I know with cash it will get lost in paying for every day things and not necessarily a treat for myself

Barney16 · 24/04/2024 19:16

Waterstones voucher. I bloody love a voucher.

Newname71 · 24/04/2024 19:17

I LOVE a gift card. I don’t have a lot of spare cash to spend on myself and if I was given cash it would probably get swallowed up buying shopping or something. A gift card means I can treat myself to something I really want

Goldx2 · 24/04/2024 19:18

Just ask her if there is anything she would particularly like

BabySnarkDoDoo · 24/04/2024 19:19

Does she have a favourite brand of cosmetics/chocolate/tea/coffee/alcohol that is a bit outside the budget of something she'd buy on a regular basis? Failing that, I think cash is a good option if you can't think of somewhere she'd definitely appreciate using a voucher.

ThePerfectDog · 24/04/2024 19:20

Wishimaywishimight · 24/04/2024 14:24

My MIL always gets me a voucher for my hairdressers for my birthday - it's very much appreciated!

This is a great idea

Firawla · 24/04/2024 19:22

I vote for cash - a lot of these suggestions are just clutter
I’m also totally happy with receiving nothing, personally. If you’re not sure I would rather just not get anything than have some random thing just because you felt you had to. I know not everyone feels that way but I’m sure a fair amount of people might?

BirtyDird · 24/04/2024 19:24

Voucher for a nice restaurant or for a treatment like a facial or massage?

Redhothoochycoocher · 24/04/2024 19:26

Mine get me a boots voucher which I love!

Screamingabdabz · 24/04/2024 19:27

The problem with cash is that £30 is more likely to be bunged at Tesco for petrol or a bag of groceries so it’s not really any kind of gift then. I would get her some lovely flowers, some nice smelly thing (tub of nice smelling body cream?), a big bar of dairy milk, bottle of wine and a £5 scratch card. All in a very pretty gift bag.
