The Conservatives are shameless in their exploitation of women

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2024/apr/23/rishi-sunak-dementia-adviser-resigns-over-treatment-of-unpaid-carers

In the latest "crack down", carers are being prosecuted for fraud and asked to repay thousands over quite simple mistakes.

Carers are overwhelmingly women and are already being let down and unsupported by the government despite doing a very important job, and in the case of elderly and disabled care, saving the government a packet.

AIBU in thinking the Tories exploit women?

YABU - Yes, they exploit both sexes equally
YANBU - No, they are shameless

I think we can stop it there, Adam.

What are you implying?

tennesseewhiskey1 · 23/04/2024 13:16

ahhh, this is the daily aren't the tories horrid, vote labour post - is it always by the same person, and, is this some misplaced labour social media tactic - mumsnet is famously already left-leaning!

Right, so having 'views' is as bad as actions which throw people into debt. Nice to know where GC women set their priorities.

The Tories' actions during lockdown threw millions into debt. Didn't hear much 'condemnation' then...

KimberleyClark · 23/04/2024 13:20

But at least they know what a woman is.

JenniferBooth · 23/04/2024 13:23

There are several threads running on MN at the moment about the carers allowance scandal and how family carers are treated. The NHS workers are conspicuous by their abscence. Its like tumbleweed. Yet post a thread about how can we improve the NHS and its like a klaxon has gone off and the health workers on here (not all of them but a good amount of them) are lining up to patient blame and moan about how families arent doing enough yet post a thread about how family carers are being treated re CA and they couldnt give less of a shit!
despite the support they got during the strikes. Would that be reciprocated if family carers went on strike?!

It's an article in the news today. As we aren't near a GE, no I'm not electioneering. I am fed up of women being screwed over by the Tories.

Oh give over. I was prepared to bite on this until this post. A GE may not have been called yet, but we all know one is imminent. To pretend otherwise is disingenuous.

JenniferBooth · 23/04/2024 13:34

DaniMontyRae · 23/04/2024 13:00

All the major political parties are shameless in their exploitation of women, they just do it in different ways.

Regarding carers allowance, it would work better if it had a taper rather than a hard cut off for income. However, the rules are very clear and anyone who has claimed while not being eligible should pay back what they owe.

Or the carers could "granny dump" like they sometimes do in the US They could start with taking them to A&E and Job Centres and leaving them there and saying "i cant do this any more"

Get a grip. I'm a random 40 odd year old mum who's posted here for ages. As if I'm some kind of undercover Labour operative.

I am however quite pleased I seem to have got under the skin of certain posters. I must be doing something right!

It gives me the rage. The endless social pressure for women to provide social care, and look after grandchildren, and work til they are 67, and smile and say they are lucky to have been able to give so much love....
No. We are humans and need proper support. If the government want people providing social care, they need to make it possible to live on one salary and encourage men to step up too.

Personally I think it's about time we had a counter to all the 'oh, aren't Labour awful' threads around how terrible they will be for women, how they will screw the economy and how boring Keir Starmer is. Sauce for the goose and all that.

Minion21 · 23/04/2024 14:17

While the right wing is sexist without concealing it, the left wing is sexist while at the same time autoproclaming itself as progressive. Among other things, the left wing supports gender ideology, which is founded on misogyny.

CrappySack · 23/04/2024 14:26

GoodOldEmmaNess · 23/04/2024 12:54

Is this thread just for the purpose of electioneering? You seem to be pushing, across several threads, the idea that the tories are even worse than labour when it comes to women's rights. It may very well be true to say that they are, but you are starting to sound like a Labour hack that has been sent here to get the laydees onside.

OP is bringing balance to the force after the influx of pro-Tory posts.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 23/04/2024 14:34

Would this be the same Conservative Party that has given us 3 female Prime Ministers while Labour cannot even manage one female Party Leader?

(And no, Margaret Beckett and Harriet Harmen as "Temporary Acting Leader" doesn't count.)

pointythings · 23/04/2024 16:03

@IvorTheEngineDriver ah yes, that argument. Let's see:

Maggie Thatcher, the root cause of our current housing shortage.
Theresa May with her 'citizens of nowhere' crap and the hostile environment.
Liz Truss, who massively increased mortgage payments for tens of thousands of people.

I don't care what sex or colour my politicians are. I want them to be competent and boring.

None of that matters. Doesn't change the fact there have still be three female Tory Prime Ministers, which somewhat refutes the OP's claim.
Whether you like what those female PMs did is frankly neither here nor there.

AdamRyan · 23/04/2024 16:49

Having female leaders is irrelevant as to whether they exploit women. Plenty of women have internalised misogyny, on fact there's an argument to be made about whether that is a prerequisite for getting to a position of power for women.

This!
Three female Prime Ministers historically and current PM from an ethnic background - unlike Labour, whose past 10 leaders have all been middle-aged, white men!

Historically, Labour women have only been 'allowed' to fill in temporarily and these days the party can't even say what a woman is!

For the record, can't stand the Tories either - but we do need to state facts!

The Conservative party have had 15 prime ministers since 1900, 11 since 1950.
Labour have had 6, 4 since 1950.

Its not really a like for like comparison is it?
