To wonder what is dangerous about my child’s lunch

NameChangeAK · 22/04/2024 20:20

I received a message from school today saying my child’s lunch contained a prohibited item and to please review the policy “as there are children with severe allergies and it’s dangerous not to comply”

I don’t usually provide packed lunches - DC has school meals, but they did like todays meal options.

Ive responded and asked what the item was but waiting for a response, but I’m confused - it’s clearly a nut free school but I can’t see anything else anywhere about other banned foods

the packed lunch contained:

  • ham sandwich (with butter) on brown bread
  • apple
  • frube (strawberry flavour)
  • carton of own brand apple juice
  • Pepperami
  • babybel

any ideas what could be the problem or Aibu to think they’ve mistaken the ham as peanut butter or something ridiculous?

It always makes me laugh when mumsnet has to specify the amount/sizes of food that is acceptable for a lunchbox. It can’t be a full sandwich, one piece of fruit and a drink, has to be:

2 triangles of a tuna sandwich
3 and a quarter cubes of cheese
9 grated slithers of a carrot
a fingernail width of a sprout
a 3mx3m tub of natural yogurt with a barrel full of honey
a thimble of water

Any more food than the above and my dd would be absolutely stuffed.

😂

3mx3m tub of yogurt 🤣🤣🤣

Ginburee · 23/04/2024 18:37

Could be the juice, our schools only allow water.

FlyingPizzaMonkey · 23/04/2024 18:37

I’d be disappointed with anyone offering me 2-3 cubes of cheese.

I hope that's being weighed too 🤣

Well times that by five and my teeny tiny 5'6 son weighing 7 stone 11 would be still ravenous. His bmi is 16 and he ate last night

4 wraps with chicken, onion, peppers, sour cream and salsa. Followed by a McDonald's quarter pounder meal then he made Dahl.
If I gave him that for lunch he start eating his classmates 😆 its not always tiny diet means you can stay tiny. Plus his ultra processed McDonald's was paired up with the Dahl so he's doing everything wrong all at once.

Or could be the frube which OP confirmed about 5 pages back

This thread is mumsnet at its finest. Catherine Tate would be gripping her two children tightly to her bosom with horror at the cubes of cheese being cheddar instead of Serbia's Zasavica Special Nature Reserve Pule.

Most of us would love our children to be eating crudités dipped in organic hummus but the reality is they want to squeezy yogurt, a sandwich on white bread, some crisps and a chocolate muffin. Literally all kids want that and parents want to put food in the lunchbox that gets eaten. Simple as.

RosesAndHellebores · 23/04/2024 07:33

Generic letter because they disapproved of what was in the lunchbox.

Ham - processed
Babybel -processed
Frube - processed
Peppermint- processed
Apple Juice - the small cartons are rarely 100% pressed/squeezed

In the kindest possible way @Hopper123 that was a lunchbox jammed with UPFs.

Better choices would have been:
Chicken, tuna or egg sandwich
Fresh fruit - endless choices and combinations
2/3 cubes of gruyere
Small container with natural Greek Yoghurt and a drizzle of honey
Water instead of juice

Did you mean to be such a judgey twat, or was that accidental?
did you do a little tinkle laugh after you finished typing.

The OPs meal is absolutely fine as a one off. It’s really not going to do them any harm!

Totally! I send my son with stuff like cut up peppers, cucumber, celery, plain yoghurt. It all comes home untouched and ends up in the bin.

If I send him with breadsticks, oatcakes, some fruit. He will eat it.

He loves a ham sandwich, wouldn't eat tuna, egg, isn't allowed cheese!

Scirocco · 23/04/2024 20:05

Yesterday's packed lunch was falafels, crudites and fruit. None of which was eaten by DC. Who wanted toast instead.

Sometimes children eat rubbish. Sometimes they just aren't that hungry, or don't like the look of something. It's not a big deal really to have the odd meal that isn't nutrient-balanced edible boredom on a plate.

Did you not read op? That's not what the letter said whatsoever.

I remember the organic food fad back in the day, this UPF one is no different. It will fade eventually.

That may depend on how big the cubes are - I could probably cope with 3 cubes if they were say, 6 inches on each side 😂

A packet of haribo is 100 times better than a packet of nuts if they are talking about allergies/dangerous even though the latter is much healthier

Some Haribo and other sweets are made of pork fat, could be forbidden to some children.

Helengreggregson · 23/04/2024 21:13

My child’s nursery has banned frubes. I’m not quite sure why, petit filous in pots aren’t banned and are just as unhealthy and have just as much potential for mess. Juice is also banned. Ridiculous that it wasn’t specified which item it was.

pilipoli · 23/04/2024 21:24

The hilarity continues. My top ones so far:

The row over Ultra processed British cows versus those impeccable organic French cows,
upf breast milk
the one who patronised op suggesting 3 cubes of gruyere and Greek yoghurt with a drizzle of honey,
the one that said: it must be apple juice.. The gateway beverage to strongbow cider 🤣

My teacher friends school allegedly banned petit filous because all the kids started calling it Titty Filous and they couldn’t get them to stop.
