To think I am allowed to buy Gluten Free stuff on offer even though I'm not GF?

So, Asda are currently reducing prices heavily on things in the Free From section. One thing in particular is GF chocolate coated rice cakes, down to 45p for a pack of 6. Where as normally coated rice cakes are £1.10+ for a pack of 6. For Asda own brand ,or £1.50 for Kallo branded ones.

So I bought 4 packs, and my friend said I was being a twat as they were "for people with coeliac".

Surely I can buy whatever I want??

Unless you actively deprive someone - taking a meal you don't need when that leaves someone without anything they can eat - it's a free country and you can purchase anything available for sale for whatever reason you want!

If you took the last pack out of the hands of a starving Coeliac I may have a different view. 😂

Springissprung24 · 22/04/2024 16:55

I would think, if anything, shopping in the GF section even when you don’t need it for medical reasons will in the long term increase stock and range of products for people that need GF. Supermarkets supply more of what is bought.

Greywitch2 · 22/04/2024 16:57

You can. But were the 4 packs all that was on the discounted shelf? Or were there hundreds of the darn things?

I'd think you were a bit of a twat if you took all of them.

FuzzyWuzzyWuzABear · 22/04/2024 16:57

Of course you can but surely you know that?

JustMarriedBecca · 22/04/2024 16:58

YABU.

I'm coeliac and those things are minging.

You'd have been better spending money on edible food.

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/04/2024 16:59

I buy GF sausages because they're nicer. I buy products from the World Foods* section in Sainsbury's - should I leave it for non-British people?

*World Food as opposed to food from outer space presumably 🤔.

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 22/04/2024 16:59

I'm a coeliac and YANBU. It would be a bit different if you were at a wedding and insisted on GF food which meant their wasn't enough for those on a GF diet.

Icannoteven · 22/04/2024 17:07

Yanbu. If more people eat gf, then in theory prices of gluten free stuff should come down and it will be stocked more widely.

It would be a bit different if there were shortages or something, obviously.

I also freaking love those chocolate rice cakes and I’m not gf myself - one of my kids has coeliacs.

PuntasticUsername · 22/04/2024 17:08

Rice cakes are naturally gluten free, so I think you're OK on this one 😁

Ridiculous comparison 😂😂

moonlitmaze · 22/04/2024 17:12

I'm surprised anyone would buy rice cakes TBH. Unless they need some new coasters.

BringMeSunshineAllDayLong · 22/04/2024 17:12

All rice cakes are GF.
I personally wouldn't eat GF bread unless I had to (and I'm a coeliac
!)

snoopyfanaccountant · 22/04/2024 17:13

Unless you are clearing the shelf, YANBU. A friend's nephew is GF and at the start of the first lockdown his DM couldn't find GF pasta, bread, etc because people were panic buying it when they couldn't get non-GF because so many people were hoarding.

Helenloveslee4eva · 22/04/2024 17:13

Buy what you want !
however the daftest thing is that ordinary choc rice cakes aren’t by definition gluten free though 😱🤣

i guess it’s that caveat “ made in a factory that also handles gluten “

Not quite.

Marmite ones aren't (obvious to us, but not necessarily somebody else)
Snack a Jacks aren't.
ASDA own brand aren't.

BobbyBiscuits · 22/04/2024 17:20

All rice cakes are GF? The free from section is always a rip off. Good for you for spotting a bargain.

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 22/04/2024 17:23

The fact that they are in the reduced price section means that they have been ignored at full price for days and you are saving them from being wasted at the end of the day when its likely they will be out of date. Buy what you want.

I was coming on to say something similar - lockdown was a nightmare for those of us who need GF. People were grabbing all the bread, pasta etc because they couldn't get their usual brands, but people on a GF diet don't have the luxury of being able to buy whatever they see. The shops also didn't seem to be stocking so much because they were prioritising what they see as "core lines" so I would say that if ever (God forbid) there's a repeat situation with shortages, please don't buy it unless you really need it.

But no harm done if there's plenty available (in fact increased demand might encourage shops to stock more and lower prices) and to be fair I can't get worked up about rice cakes as they're all GF anyway.

Gluten free sausages? You mean, like, a sausage that's actually made of meat? What is the world coming to 😂

No there were about 20 packs I'd say. Two trays worth nearly

I think they're in the Free from section to guarantee GF, no cross contamination from anything else made in same place.

What's so funny about GF sausages? Lots of the cheaper sausages have added wheat.

The chocolate ones aren't, presumably because of potential cross contamination. They don't actually contain it as an ingredient.
