To think I am allowed to buy Gluten Free stuff on offer even though I'm not GF?

So, Asda are currently reducing prices heavily on things in the Free From section. One thing in particular is GF chocolate coated rice cakes, down to 45p for a pack of 6. Where as normally coated rice cakes are £1.10+ for a pack of 6. For Asda own brand ,or £1.50 for Kallo branded ones.

So I bought 4 packs, and my friend said I was being a twat as they were "for people with coeliac".

Surely I can buy whatever I want??

The fact that they are in the reduced price section means that they have been ignored at full price for days and you are saving them from being wasted at the end of the day when its likely they will be out of date. Buy what you want.

They weren't in the reduced price section. In the FF section and had an offer on so like : "48p - save £1.02p"

buy what you want but maybe chose something that isn’t ultra processed

Fine at the supermarkets, not fine at a BBQ

I was coming on to say something similar - lockdown was a nightmare for those of us who need GF. People were grabbing all the bread, pasta etc because they couldn't get their usual brands, but people on a GF diet don't have the luxury of being able to buy whatever they see. The shops also didn't seem to be stocking so much because they were prioritising what they see as "core lines" so I would say that if ever (God forbid) there's a repeat situation with shortages, please don't buy it unless you really need it.

But no harm done if there's plenty available (in fact increased demand might encourage shops to stock more and lower prices) and to be fair I can't get worked up about rice cakes as they're all GF anyway.

Someone in our village a few weeks into lockdown were getting rid of 4kg of GF pasta. They were shameless about it "bought this as nothing else available, kids won't eat it, will chuck it unless someone wants it?"

I took it and gave the bags to someone I know who is GF and couldn't get pasta!

I don't know of any coeliac how would fight with you over those horrible rice cakes.

I think the supermarket is fair enough but at an event or anywhere there's limited coeliac suitable foods,it would be out of order and completely out of order.

AgnesX · 22/04/2024 17:54

If something is on sale they've not been bought and so up for grabs

I couldn't find it in myself to get excited about rice cakes, it's not like pasta where my choice would be very limited (my DH is g/f).

Absolutely this. Buy what you want in the shops, it's only really at a catered event that you should leave the GF, vegan etc stuff for those who only eat that.

Really?

We eat ridiculously well. My kids lunch box is usually something like, cucumber, tomatoes, beetroot, olives and broccoli - with chicken/sliced roast beef/ turkey and some homemade cheese crackers. With raspberries and plain greek yogurt for pudding.
Their breakfast is usually eggs and homemade toasted bread, or organic whole oats porridge with milk. Dinner is usually something like wholemeal rice, salmon fillets and green beans.

So, I'll allow ourselves an occasional ultra processed Dark Belgian chocolate coated rice cake on occasion. :p

Thank you for doing that. It was genuinely a struggle to find staples like bread, pasta etc during lockdown and people like that weren't helping.

Rice cakes, fine as they're GF anyway, but I really don't understand why people would want to eat the bread etc if they don't have to - it's really not a treat to have to eat this stuff. Most of it is not a patch on the alternative and I sorely wish I didn't need it.

whoputallofthatthere · 22/04/2024 18:06

Also 😂@ rice cakes being unhealthy now. This place sometimes. Have a bloody rice cake or a biscuit or a slice of cake or whatever you want, just all things in moderation.

I think they're in the Free from section to guarantee GF, no cross contamination from anything else made in same place.

Ah, fair enough!

MrsCarson · 22/04/2024 18:57

I get the Asda brand ones in the normal section as they come up as GF when I scan them with the Coeliac app. They taste much better than the ones from the free from section. Free from ones might be milk free too.

As a celiac, buy what you like. Just don’t eat all the gluten free food at the wedding buffet 🤣

SometimesButNotAlways · 22/04/2024 20:13

Could you possibly go to supermarkets and buy GF sandwiches too? There aren't enough of them because there isn't enough demand and it drives my DS scatty. We could do with your assistance.

I would, but I never buy supermarket sandwiches... But if ever i do find myself having to buy one, I'll get GF for you 😁

Not quite.

Marmite ones aren't (obvious to us, but not necessarily somebody else)
Snack a Jacks aren't.
ASDA own brand aren't.

Ohhh that's good to know thanks!
Snack a jacks are vile as are marmite rice cakes so since being diagnosed those haven't passed my lips but Asda! Why?!
