Let's settle it once for all: How many adults can big chicken feed?

I am talking about chicken as main protein in a dish in normal 1 to 2 course eating. Not 8 course meal.

My guess when cooking would be 1/4 chicken per adult so four people.
2 x breast and wing
2 x leg quarters

Person in my family suggests 10 easily:
2 x wings
4 x white
2 x drumsticks
2 x tighs.

AIBU chicken can easily feed 10.
AINBU ten people will be very polite and say nothing but stay hungry. Share among 4.

@Growlybear83

Depends how I'm serving the steak ... as a main protein with fries, mushroom and tenderstem broccoli 6-8oz approx per person. Served in fajitas, on top of risotto, with peppers in a baguette etc you need half the amount

toomuchfaff · 22/04/2024 12:59

1 chicken - 10 people?

Not sure if they are really skinny and don't eat much but if i went somewhere for dinner and there were 10 adults and one chicken got put on the table; id be hoping that the takeaway was open on the way home. For 10 people coming to dinner id put on at least 3 chickens and a load of veg/potatoes/sides so people could bulk up if they wanted (more likely to do different meats but for arguments sake)

As pointed out previously there are restaurants that will serve a full half chicken for one person, Nandos gives each person half a chicken when ordering a single meal.

Previousreligion · 22/04/2024 13:03

I would say 6 because when I buy a chicken I do roast for 2 adults and a toddler, then chicken risotto, then chicken pasta bake, plus stock. That's from a 2kg chicken.

At Christmas our one chicken serves five adults and three children a generous enough portion. Not sure what weight chicken that was.

CactusMactus · 22/04/2024 13:07

4 adults + 2 kids... but we eat a lot of veggies and my DP does incredible yorkies and roasties so actually the chicken is not the highlight...

SpringLobelia · 22/04/2024 13:11

I'd say normally 4 adults.

But the last time I cooked a whole large chicken for 3 adults and 1 teenage boy the teenage boy served first literally took both drumsticks and both wings and a breast before I could stop him ( and his doting parent never even tried).

I'd never factored in how much a teenage boy can eat (pre-kids)

So now I over-cater like a Queen. Grin

I live on my own and am not a big fan of chicken. If I buy a whole one, I’m eating it for a week.

Likewise, so I buy a guinea fowl. I know they are more expensive, weight-for-weight, than chicken, but I believe they are more flavoursome so don't need so much. I get two generous meals out of one, plus plenty for a stir-fry etc.

It makes a delicious stock as well, far more gelatinous and tastier than a similar chicken stock.

But the mountain of food served by restaurants is not a good indicator of portion size.

I honestly feel ill at the thought of eating half a chicken in one meal.

Oh, you delicately slender flower! Can't have you feeling ill. Tell you what, cut yourself a sliver of chicken and put the rest on my plate. You can have two-thirds of my Massive Salad to go with your own 😋

This thread really is true Mumsnet gold, as are most threads about food. And people wonder why other forums take the piss out of Mumsnet posters with the mad competitive under eating?😂😂

valensiwalensi · 22/04/2024 14:20

Sainsburys now do a lovely extra small chicken which is perfect for DH and I with some spare for DD3!

I dont believe in leftovers because I am not a quitter.

mrsm43s · 22/04/2024 14:22

I reckon a large chicken (around 2kg) would comfortably serve about 5. 2 x legs (whole), 3 portions from the breast meat. There's pretty much no meat on the wings of a bird that size.

After the 5 roast dinner portions were taken, there'd be scraps left to make soup or stock, but not really enough left to make a meal that had chicken as the main component.

bombastix · 22/04/2024 15:00

Okay... what about a poussin?

ducks

Oldraver · 22/04/2024 15:07

I now cut a chicken in half and freeze on half

I usually do it as a one pot meal, potatos in the bottom with carrots and stuffing. There is more than enough chicken come off to feed three adults, with a bit for my sandwiches then next day

We were wasting quite a bit when I roasted a whole chicken

therealcookiemonster · 22/04/2024 15:11

ridiculous. everyone knows you can feed a family of four for five days from one small chicken. no wonder young people can't afford homes! it's all this extravagant chicken eating that's going on.

YesIDidMeanToBeRudeFucko · 22/04/2024 15:12

Personally if I serve a massive salad alongside it, I can stretch a large chicken for 5 meals for 2 adults and 2 DS with generous leftovers for sandwiches for my large rugby playing, hollow legged DS's and all their friends.

I also use the bones for stock and if I get it right and voodoo the bones correctly, I can conjure a 2nd large chicken up for next week.

Lol how big is that chicken if half of it feeds three fully grown adults and there’s enough left for sandwiches?

pinkspeakers · 22/04/2024 15:15

If we have a medium/large chicken as part of a roast dinner then it feeds 4 with leftovers. The leftovers will form part of a noodle or rice based meal for 4 people the next day with lots of veggies and a bit of chicken.

So no, not 10. But 4 generously. Probably 6.

No wonder we have so much obesity in this country, I can get 7 meals for 4 people including my DH who has a special secret hobby.

Mistymountain · 22/04/2024 15:17

I would say 6, not sure hoe you'd share it up though. You can't serve a person 1 wing as a portion!

So true. We've lost sight of normal special secret hobbying husbands

Alondra · 22/04/2024 15:22

We are usually 3 people for dinner. If I make a roast chicken, the breast is untouched and would be eaten in sandwiches.

If I make a chicken casserole, I have a minimum of 2 pieces per person with 2-3 pieces remaining. I spent more on chicken pieces for the casserole than the whole chook. For the roast chicken I have to roast nice vegetables, while the casserole doesn't need as many.

Chicken curry is even cheaper. A couple of large diced chicken breasts, spices a can of tomato, half can of coconut milk, and together with jasmin rice makes a cheap, lovely meal.

GingerIsBest · 22/04/2024 15:26

I saw a ridicuous recipe the other day for a one pot chicken dinner. Lovely I thought. 1 thigh per person. WTAF?

I took ds, aged about 6 at the time, to a friend's house once and she served one thigh per person, including for her teenage DS and cycling-crazy DH, with a few veg on the side. DS and I had to stop at McDonalds on the way home! I have thought often about that meal and whether there was something different going on. I do know she used to get upset that her DH was eating at the office and she worried about his weight. I did wonder if he was secretly eating as he wasn't allowed to at home!

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 22/04/2024 15:26

A small chicken would do two - half a chicken each - so the leg & thigh & wing bit and one breast. Just like Nando's with half a peri peri chicken and two sides; or half a rotisserie chicken from Tesco

I did cut for 6 when I had friend with toddler.
Basically did cut very big chunk of white meat with wings so front of the bird was 4 portions (2 x white with wings - like failed attempt of chicken supreme, 2 smaller white portions) and legs cut in pieces so 4 pieces.
Idea was that adults (4) can have one or two pieces each and toddlers one.
Plus sides.

That being said, we had snacks followed by really big platter with cold cuts and cheese (2kg total) served with bread as starter and couple of drinks. There was plenty left for sandwiches in a week but I hate getting small starter where people polish it off in two bites and look around where is main.

If I was serving just chicken I'd do one and a half for 6 people.

1 large chicken easily feeds 4 adults.

Here we buy one large chicken for 4 adults plus 4 year old plus 1 year old.
