Simple strength training for an inactive over 50... Does anyone know a good video online?

Hi ... just that really. My GP suggested I started doing 5-10 minutes strength training a few times a week - very appealing, as not as big an ask as going to the gym etc

But when I asked where I should look for online videos she suggested Nike which is very much aimed at the young and active

So what I am keen to find is a serious of videos online with strength building exercises for someone like me who is older and relatively inactive.. I am happy to buy some weights, I already have a couple of fairly light ones sitting unused in the bathroom cupboard.

Look forward to hearing what's worked for you or your friends - thanks!

Hollyactive on Instagram has various classes online every week, including beginner weights. You get a copy of class to keep and do again. Great classes and super lovely trainer.

Just wanted to say thank you: it wasn't my question but it is pretty much my situation. I have light handweights and am going to do a 15 minute beginners video recommended above, right now! Great that we are all wanting to look after ourselves.

Today's the day I start - I think I'll try a different recommendation each day this week and then settle for who I like best.

Such a fab thread - thanks all for your generous sharing

If you have time to post after doing this (obviously you need to focus your time on doing the actual exercising ;) ) I'd be interested to hear your impressions and who you decided to go with (need to kick start my own exercising!)

Hi. I can recommend Joe Wicks (the Body Coach) - he has free workouts on YouTube as well as his own app (which is really good value for money- he also does strength training workouts for menopause). I'm 51 and been doing his app for a year - I'm the fittest/strongest I've ever been.

I started walking with weights in my pockets at first

Congrats @SharpWriter - so good to hear!!!

And @PhuckyNell I'd been thinking of doing something similar - has it made a differrence do you think?

Yes @shepherdsangeldelight - I'll post at the end of the week - How about you posting too when you start? Love to hear other's experiences...

I'm mid 50s and while my experience is different because I joined a gym (I needed accountability and wanted confidence from technique training) I'm absolutely loving how much stronger I feel.

It's stupid stuff like there's a big step up from our drive that I used to avoid and go the 'long' way round. Now I can lever myself up on it without even thinking. Carrying shopping home, carrying bags of compost or bags of wood....so much easier. I can get off the floor easily, just sort of step up, rather than waving around like a beached whale.

I still don't like going to the gym, but I am seeing benefits.

Loving this @BarrelOfOtters - great news - how long did it take before you saw a difference?

Okay.... who wants to come on this journey with me? I'm going to report back to you all as I successfully try each new one, rather than at the end of the week....great accountability for me!!!

A shout out to whoever recommended Dr Chatterjee, as recommended by her osteopath - UTTERLY BRILLIANT!!!!

  1. https://drchatterjee.com/5min-kitchen-workout YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dr Chatterjee 5 minute kitchen workout:
Utterly brilliant – so simple, you can do immediately and it really is 5 mins... and yes, your olive oil bottle and tins of beans get a look in too. I’m going to do every day for the next 3 days before adding in anything else. I can already feel a mild muscle ache from my first 5 mins and I love how he builds in different levels so that, as you get stronger, you can move on a level ... all in 5 mins in your own kitchen!!
  1. Lift with Cee as recommended by 2 of you as an "older woman, more sedate, various lengths"
I'm going to investigate – at first glance nothing shorter than 30 mins Looks like an inspiring older woman... I will read and explore when more time So on pause for now... that’s it for today...

Looking forward to tomorrow's training already!!
