Simple strength training for an inactive over 50... Does anyone know a good video online?

Hi ... just that really. My GP suggested I started doing 5-10 minutes strength training a few times a week - very appealing, as not as big an ask as going to the gym etc

But when I asked where I should look for online videos she suggested Nike which is very much aimed at the young and active

So what I am keen to find is a serious of videos online with strength building exercises for someone like me who is older and relatively inactive.. I am happy to buy some weights, I already have a couple of fairly light ones sitting unused in the bathroom cupboard.

Look forward to hearing what's worked for you or your friends - thanks!

Bump as I would love to know the same.

Houseplantmad · 21/04/2024 21:04

search for Annie Deadman strength training on YouTube. There are loads of videos at all levels there. Her weekly newsletter is good too.

shepherdsangeldelight · 21/04/2024 21:06

I like Lift with Cee on YouTube - she is an older woman and the workouts feel a bit more sedate (and she has ones of different lengths, and ones you can just do in your own time). I agree that a lot of the workouts online are a bit too active!

CocoapuffPuff · 21/04/2024 21:12

Hasfit on YouTube. Loads of strength training for beginners videos.

Groundhogday2024 · 21/04/2024 22:07

Heather Robertson on you tube.

CoatesCat · 21/04/2024 22:08

Another vote for hasfit. Theres lots of different types and they so modified moves for beginners

Perhaps start out with something like this:

The above is all your own body weight. There are some great bodyweight only workout videos on YouTube for strength training.

If you have some weights at home - I’m guessing dumbbells, which are great by the way, try some of these exercises - YouTube is full of how to videos:

Bicep curls
Hammer curls
Tricep extensions / French press
Skullcrushers
Side lateral raises (shoulder)
Shoulder press
Floor press (chest)
Dumbbell floor fly
Bent over dumbbell row
Sumo squat
Goblet squat

Tricep dips (bodyweight)
Glute kickback (bodyweight)
Donkey kickback (bodyweight)
Hip thrusts/glute bridges (bodyweight)

A set of resistance bands isn’t a bad purchase either. Hasfit mentioned above has a resistance band all body workout video from what I can see.

If you want to start small, I would suggest a chair yoga on YouTube I have found them great

RenoDakota · 21/04/2024 22:38

I am interested too.
Seems it's not enough to just go out for a run anymore - I keep hearing that I should be doing strength training but don't really know what the hell it is!

Sealtheenvelope · 21/04/2024 22:41

Jenny McClendon does strength training classes online specifically aimed at older people. They'd be really good to start with. She's an American physio and knows what's she's on about. In time you might want to move to something more challenging, but excellent intro.

LightSpeeds · 21/04/2024 22:43

Yes, I need this too.

I just bought a barbell with weights (so 2-20kg) which, so far, seems great and I prefer it to single handheld weights.

I also got a recumbent exercise bike (because I couldn't stand the saddle on my other exercise bike).

Leslie Sansone walk. Loads of videos on YT.

To add - some of the videos are walking with weights and resistance etc.

WhatACluster · 21/04/2024 22:45

The chair yoga looks interesting

FinallySpringSprung · 21/04/2024 22:45

Another vote for lifting with Cee

Kettlebells are fab, try workouts with Roxanne. Lots of different intensities and lengths, and there are short beginner ones.

CheeseDreamsTonight · 21/04/2024 22:48

She's on YouTube

Aswellisnotoneword · 21/04/2024 22:50

This guy on YouTube is great for starting from scratch, he's a physio specialising in over 50s and everything's very gentle and focused on injury prevention.

I can see he has some 10 min while body workouts, but also lots of content on mobility and flexibility, plus tackling specific problem areas.

Thank you so much for this thread op! And to posters who have recommended on-line trainers.

I have been looking for the very same thing today!

TherebytheGraceofGodgoI · 22/04/2024 00:11

I recommend Susannah Johnston on YouTube, loads of videos on strength training. There’s also the facebook group The Strong Bones Challenge which has good motivational posts by members and links to YouTube videos.

Pixiedust1234 · 22/04/2024 00:17

Thanks for asking, I'm inactive, (fat), and over 50 too so looking forward to checking these out!

kaben · 22/04/2024 00:29

Me too!

loveyouradvice · 22/04/2024 11:26

This is SO BRILLIANT - lots of recommendations for me to work through.

THANK YOU SO SO SO SO MUCH.

And yes, I have a bunch of resistance bands languishing at the bottom of my underwear drawer... So many good intentions, but now you've all made it easy for me to act by starting small, in my own sitting room and just building from there!
