To be annoyed that it's impossible to get a same day hair colour with a new hairdresser now

Because they've all become so strict with the patch test?

I just want a spontaneous colour tomorrow but I know no one will do it without 48 hours for the patch.

Miss the good old days.

I have had my hair professionally dyed for forty odd years and never had a patch test! Not in the UK though.

Same, never heard of patch tests till this thread. But I've never expected to get a colouring appointment on the same day, either!

It’s not so much that the hairdresser’s insurance won’t cover them (I’ve never seen a condition or warranty that specific) but rather you just simply can’t defend that claim and the claimant will succeed. Manufacturers’ instructions for toners and dyes will say something about the necessity for a patch test. No waiver will protect a hairdresser in that scenario.

Not to downplay the distress of hairdressers who might witness someone going into anaphylactic shock, allergic reaction cases and those resulting in injury to the scalp or hair (usually painful plus added distress due to impact on appearance, plus a psychological injury often goes hand in hand with it) have significant economic potential. A bad enough one of those on your claims history is going to impact your ability to get affordable cover in the future.

To be honest at 40 odd I'm pretty sure it's superfluous and having to wait definitely makes life like 0.5% more annoying.

I developed a severe allergy to hair dye in my 50's ...

It is annoying (although I appreciate the reason). I want to change hairdressers and I’m prepared to travel to my nearest city to find a decent one. But that’s a 45 minute drive each way plus parking so it’s both costly and time consuming to have to get a patch test. As a result I have a growing white flash in my hair..

IamnotSethRogan · 21/04/2024 07:30

I mean would you even be able to get a spontaneous next day appointment with a decent hair dressers?

ChristmasGutPunch · 21/04/2024 09:41

Yes!

There are hundreds of hairdressers - several have appointments tomorrow!

Think you should be able to sign a waiver and have it done at your own risk

Someone will still try to bad name their hairdresser if it goes wrong, plus adverse reactions can actually be quite serious!

drawnfrommemory · 21/04/2024 09:46

My hairdressers uses that colourstart passport system and I now have to fill out the questionnaire before every appointment. I haven't had to redo the test yet, but I imagine I will at some point.

So did I. It started with Wella and then Aveda. I now spend a king's ransom on Davines which so far is fine as it doesn't contain the main culprits.

It also smells divine.

Greendoorsaremyfavourite · 21/04/2024 10:33

It's a legal requirement OP.

ChristmasGutPunch · 22/04/2024 15:34

It's not quite as straightforward as a clear legal requirement (eg I don't need one if I keep having the colour done at the same place every six months...) but yes I know it's part of the general health and safety measures.

Again, I'm not saying I blame them for insisting. I just wish they wouldn't.

Once you have it done once as long as you have your hair dyed with them within a period of time (normally a year) you won’t have to do it again unless you dramatically change your colour. They are just covering themselves. Plus if you reacted badly to a hair dye the affects are horrific!
