To be annoyed that it's impossible to get a same day hair colour with a new hairdresser now

Because they've all become so strict with the patch test?

I just want a spontaneous colour tomorrow but I know no one will do it without 48 hours for the patch.

Miss the good old days.

Hairdresser have to do patch tests for insurance reasons too. Their insurance wouldn't pay out if you had a reaction and sued them.

Yes it's a pain but it's been like that for around the last 10 years at my hairdressers. It's another thing to pre-plan.

Oh I don't judge them for following the rules I just wish I could find one who would let me take the risk in return for my hair being non shit by Tuesday!

And if it goes awry? Your hair could be the least of your worries.

To be honest at 40 odd I'm pretty sure it's superfluous and having to wait definitely makes life like 0.5% more annoying.

I died my hairs for years at home and always did a test, good job I did as I started reacting a few years ago. It's not that rare for people to develop allergies to the dye after years of use.

Saschka · 20/04/2024 21:21

What decent colourist has a same-day appointment open? I wouldn’t go to somebody with so few bookings they could fit you in same day.

Bunnyhair · 20/04/2024 21:28

I get you, OP. I see why they have to do it and I don’t begrudge them at all, but it does mean I gave up having highlights a decade ago because for some irrational reason having to go to the salon twice in a week feels like an utterly unendurable inconvenience. I don’t know why I feel this strongly about it!

This.

same as someone wanting a tattooist cheap and same day.

nope. If they’re any good they’ll have a wait list.

ChristmasGutPunch · 20/04/2024 21:55

I don't get a patch test at my existing hairdresser so not sure why a new one has to. I think it's overkill and I doubt anything would go wrong. I don't know anyone who has ever had a bad reaction.

I live in a big city and dozens will be free tomorrow I just can't get them to do my hair! Pah pah.

@ChristmasGutPunch i know exactly what you mean! I miss the good old days too! Surely a signature should be sufficient. Everything is an absolute faff these days though.

She did but it wasn't left for the correct amount of time
She actually talks a lot now publicising correct patch testing, it needs to be 48hrs not 24

Notreat · 20/04/2024 21:59

It's been that way for years. Definitely ore Covid no reputable hairdresser would risk it without a patch test. Some people have had extremely adverse reactions to hair colour.

I also don't want a patch of dye on my skin! I go to hairdresser to avoid the dye patches or I could just order dye off the internet. We really need a waiver culture in the UK.

You signing a waiver isn't going to make a hairdresser feel better if you die from anaphylactic shock though is it? Impatience is not a good enough reason to put someone else at risk of a trauma like that.

Anewuser · 20/04/2024 22:03

I’ve had highlights for over 40 years and never had a patch test. Guessing it’s not required for them?

Exactly! It will ruin their life. You might be dead so you won't care then but that will haunt them for life

No because it doesn't have PPD, bleach doesn't need a patch test

(Not posting directly at you BTW but just as info!)
I mean yes it's up to every individual but the hairdresser doesn't want to be sued and you could actually have a reaction and dje

I have a form of urticaria and it's hell. I couldn't wear a coat, go for a walk, exercise, have a hot bath or shower, anything that involved getting slightly warm or raising my heart rate for years without being covered in hives head to toe even to the soles of my feet. It's just not worth it

I colour at home. I still do a patch test because I don't want to risk my face swelling up and my airways being cut off.

I'm glad hairdressers have clamped down. Reminds me of when people rang the police because KFC ran out of chicken Hmm

This.
And a waiver is meaningless anyway. If you are an hairdresser and injure or someone dies as as result of your work and it is found you haven’t followed all the requirements firstly a. Your insurance won’t payout and b. You could be prosecuted.

ChristmasGutPunch · 20/04/2024 22:14

Re bleach I think it's pretty unusual to have bleach with no toning colour, isn't it?

My sister had been using the same hair dye for nearly 20 years before she suddenly had an horrific allergic reaction that we thought was going to kill her

TheHateIsNotGood · 20/04/2024 22:25

How thoroughly awful for you OP; I've got a big bag of Red Henna I haven't opened yet as it's so awful standing on the precipace of hair colouring, particularly if you do your own.

It must be dreadful for you with all these hairdressers covering their arses with following the guidance/law so they don't get sued.

What the hoi polloi need to understand is that they are subservient to the wishes and needs of others, such as OP; cause we live in a meritocracy.....hahahaha. Maybe not.

Bringonchristmas36 · 20/04/2024 22:25

I’m the same. I really want eyelash extensions and used to be able to just have them- now I have to have a patch test first and I just can’t bring myself to do it, it’s just so annoying.

I got round the issue with hair dye by having the test done when I took my son for a trim so I didn’t have to make a special trip… I don’t think I can take him for lash extensions though!

Clingfilm · 20/04/2024 23:17

Completely distracted by the fact you can find a hairdressers open on a Sunday, they'll all be shut til Tuesday here in the provinces Grin but yeah, I feel your pain, I had to go into town twice in one week for this once, such an inconvenience but I get why they do it.

ChristmasGutPunch · 20/04/2024 23:35

Mondays seem more of a day off round here, though some are open. Maybe I just need to temporarily spray it bright pink or something.
