I was on my weekly Saturday outing with DM. Checking my rear view mirror and I had to do a double take!! Car behind me, female driver with L plates on the car. Male front seat passenger had a little girl sat on his knee! She looked about 18 months old! Said to DM, just check I’m not seeing things!! Nope, I wasn’t! Pulled over and reported to 101, I honestly can’t believe there are people out there that stupid and reckless!

OP posts:

And you replied YANBU!!

Yes... you're not being unreasonable for it to still be in your mind today and still be shocked about it.

stillavid · 20/04/2024 17:52

Unless I am mis reading the OP said it was a weekly trip not she went a week ago - presumably this happened today and therefore quite reasonable to be shocked.

Yes that's how i understood it too?

My first thought as well.

What's their sex got to do with it?

Yanbu to still be shocked no. If it's still shocking you a week later I would seek help

Are you always this nitpicky?

KomodoOhno · 20/04/2024 19:26

My nephew is a police officer in a indigenous area. He has seen children destroyed by the windshield numerous times. He and his partner have had more counseling then you can imagine. I dont know why people take these chances. I'm glad you reported it.

Sorry what?

Rabbitsarebraver · 20/04/2024 20:05

Funnily enough I remember reporting a similar things years ago, and it’s apparently legal to have a child like this for a short journey in an emergency situation, or in a taxi. For example if you were stranded somewhere with a young child and could get a lift with no car seat, the police see this as acceptable

‘Indigenous’ area?

Justanothermum9421 · 20/04/2024 20:11

OP, I have no idea why people are being so rude! YANBU. People are stupid. I would have done the same

Nannyfannybanny · 20/04/2024 20:11

Friends I trained with nursing back in the 70s, 2 of my colleagues married,he was working in the ED, when the result of an RTC came in, couple, mother sitting in the front seat, 6 month old baby on her lap. Parents uninjured, baby died. It finished him.

neilyoungismyhero · 20/04/2024 20:16

You can't be in a supervisory position with a child sat on your lap. If the driver got into difficulties how are you going to immediately deal or take over with a young child in the way?
If it's not unlawful it should be.
The OP was right to report them for the sake of the toddler. I've been involved with a person who went through a windscreen it wasn't a pretty sight I can tell you.

Sharontheodopolodous · 20/04/2024 20:17

I work at a drive thou

Today I have seen a teenage lad,no seatbelt with his feet on the dashboard
5/6 loose dogs (loads more that where secured fine)
3 people chatting on the phone (one was hands free)
4 texting
7 kids with no seatbelts/car seats (one was a baby laid on a lap)
1 baby in a car seat but no seatbelt
1 child hanging out of the sunroof like Dino from the flintstones
5 adults smoking with kids in the back
About 6 that honked of weed

All in one 7 hour shift-and I don't do drive thou-I'm dining area normally

It makes me so angry-they don't give a fuck-they drive away from the window and drive away down a busy road

It only takes a second for something to happen-we've had 3 crashes outside in the last year alone

trippily · 20/04/2024 20:18

That's how you're supposed to travel with a child under 3 if you don't have a car seat.

walnutcoffeecake · 20/04/2024 20:52

Id have just shook my head and got on with my own day.
The drama.
Do you report on a lot of things to the 101.

theeyeofdoe · 20/04/2024 20:56

TheOriginalEmu · 20/04/2024 19:18

Shocked? No, not really. Stupid people exist. I would think ‘wow, morons’ and then I’d get on with my day. I wouldn’t be writing a post about it or ring the police tho. It wouldn’t occur to me.

Why. It’s not he little girl’s fault her parents are idiots, why not report it? Do obviously realise car seat prevent children being seriously injured.

No they're less bother if you tape them to the roof

Batshit thread with batshit replies.

Georgethecat1 · 20/04/2024 21:39

One of the mums at our school will
quite happily allow her kids to go in the car with no car seat or sit in the boot as it’s fun. I’ve always been a bit gob smacked tbh…. will never let her give my child a lift

Frangipanyoul8r · 20/04/2024 21:46

Seeing a child not being cared for properly is everyone’s business. Well done for reporting OP 👏🏻

EnglishBluebell · 20/04/2024 22:28

ludicrouslycapaciousbags · 20/04/2024 17:44

Drama 👑

Wouldn't be saying that if you'd witnessed children flying through windscreens and landing head first on a concrete curb, followed by their head exploding like a watermelon.....Like I have.

Grow up

This! Please ignore the neglectful idiots attempting to start a pile on, OP. You did the right thing

MidnightMeltdown · 20/04/2024 22:39

Lol! I assume that you're quite young.

It wasn't that long ago that this sort of thing was normal (and in some countries it still is!).

Seatbelts weren't even a requirement until some point in the 80s

It's not good of course, but I am in no way 'shocked' that some people still do things like this. Especially if they were born in a less developed country.

I grew up in the 80s and agree it was totally normal then.

But the early 80s are 40 years ago. I'm not sure that's the right comparison for car safety!
