To hang my underwear on the washing line?

lojanto · 20/04/2024 12:42

I've hung clothes out to dry a couple of times this year when the weather has been nicer.

My friend came over and was horrified that my underwear was hung out (a mix of bras, big pants, things etc.) with the rest of the clothes.

It's not something that's ever entered my mind before, am I BU?!

My garden is quite overlooked.

My hand washed bras are out at the moment in my back garden, who cares

Bumblebeeinatree · 20/04/2024 13:41

I remember my mother's neighbour washed her husbands vests and pants accidentally with a red scarf in with them, they all came out pink. It was the talk of the neighbourhood pink men's underwear hanging on the line, in the days when 'men' only wore white.

I also usually hang undies on the inner lines, mainly so heavier stuff on the outer wires gets more of the sun and breeze. And it's easier to hang sheets and towels, etc, on the longer runs.

SparkyBlue · 20/04/2024 13:44

Today is the first proper dry and sunny day we've had in months. I'm actually sadly excited to be able to line dry my clothes. It wouldn't enter my head not to hang out my undies. I actually feel sorry for someone who'd have an issue with seeing other people's clean underwear drying. They must have some deep rooted issues

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 20/04/2024 13:45

As long as they're clean,
they're fit to be seen.

LatteLady · 20/04/2024 13:46

The nuns, when I was at the Convent, used to put their underwear in the middle of the washing line and hide it with sheets placed on the outside lines, so we school girls would not be made giddy by seeing what covered their nether regions!

Me, I just hang it up and if it perturbs the neighbours, more fool them!

crumbledog · 20/04/2024 13:51

I don’t hang underwear outside, I don’t really like the idea of people seeing my knickers. I’m sure no one cares, but It all gets shoved in the radiator inside - usually scrunched up cause I can’t be bothered to separate everything out.

Thepeopleversuswork · 20/04/2024 13:52

I don't understand how people like this cope with day to day life. It must be so restrictive.

A couple of weeks ago I popped to the pharmacy to pick up some sanitary towels for my teenaged DD. Didn't bother getting a bag with them so I just took them two stops on the bus as they were and a random woman sitting opposite me offered me a plastic bag. Middle of the day, there was almost no one else on the bus, it didn't occur to me that I should cover them up. I was a bit bemused at the time, it didn't dawn on me until later but I realised afterwards she must have thought it was shameful to be carrying STs in public and that I needed help to disguise them.

These things are fairly trivial in the scheme of things but I actually find it pretty disturbing that people still regard things like this as a source of shame and something to hide. Who gives a flying fuck that other people are made aware that you might menstruate or wear underwear?

WigglyVonWaggly · 20/04/2024 14:01

Spice it up and hang out some red crotchless thongs.

Jeezitneverends · 20/04/2024 14:03

Can we just clarify that said underwear is hung out AFTER it’s been washed?🤣

Your mate’s bonkers

I cope just fine with everyday life, fairly robust and resilient person. I just don’t like the idea of people seeing my underwear drying. Couldn’t care less about anyone else’s.

Perhaps your friend does hers in the oven at a low temprature, say Gas Mark 1?

Memories of a friend whose mother was taken to task by a next door neighbour because she hung her daughter's racy underwear on the washing line, it was RED! and apparently it disturbed her, the neighbour's. husband.

My ex next door neighbour once had a go at me because my pants where giving her boyfriend 'the flutters'

(The same boyfriend who is her brother if the dss asks)

My massive work pants and matron style bras where turning him on apparently

I laughed and told her to stop hanging out of her dds bedroom window for a better gawp into our garden and while she was at it,she could tell him not to do the same or I'd hang clothes out that would give him more than 'the flutters'

Never heard another thing about it

Thepartnersdesk · 20/04/2024 14:42

The only bit I find strange is that you've only done it a couple of times this year.

I peg everything all year round. There's usually at least a couple of dry days a week (and I live in Scotland).

EBearhug · 20/04/2024 14:46

Mine go out (although not currently, because until I have the climbers up the fence under control, I don't have enough space to get the rotary line out.) They go on the inner lines, because they are shorter, and lower, so the outer, loner, higher lines are saved for things like sheets.

I don't care if my neighbours see. Most of it is M&S cotton knickers, not very exciting. The most exciting undies may get handwashed, and not dried in direct sun, in case they fade.

Kalevala · 20/04/2024 14:49

I put period pads and my pants on the inside of the line, behind bigger items if my teenage son's friends are over. That's as far as I go.

FabulousWealthyTart · 20/04/2024 14:57

My big knickers flap away merrily in the breeze. My neighbour goes a step further and hangs out her washing wearing just her bra and pants. We often spend another hour or so chatting over the fence..we don't care for the opinion of others.

Neverthetwainshall · 20/04/2024 14:57

Ha ha😁I do hang my undies on the line at home even though I am overlooked. Howeverrrrr....., we have a caravan and the number of people who stick their big knickers on the line/ whirly outside, that does piss me off😂I don't want to look at your big skiddy pants while I'm reading / relaxing with me cup of tea.

Neveralonewithaclone · 20/04/2024 15:01

My bras are so big that i do hide them on the inner lines. I remember laughing at my cousin for doing the same and her saying just you wait!

WeightoftheWorld · 20/04/2024 15:03

Deebee90 · 20/04/2024 12:48

I always hang my underwear outside. Bras, knickers, period pants, pjs anything. It’s my own garden. If you don’t like it don’t look in my garden.

Same.

5128gap · 20/04/2024 15:04

I hang mine out. Had this conversation at work and my colleague was 'mortified' at the thought, and said she dries hers on an electric airer in the spare room. She does too. When we were in a departmental Zoom meeting last week you could see it in the background.

WanderingthroughWildflowers · 20/04/2024 15:16

My partners boxers are currently on the line, if my knickers had been in todays wash they would be too.

My mum however has a rotary line and was mortified once when I was helping her peg out her washing that I was pegging knickers on the outside rather than 'hiding' them on the inner lines.

My nan on the other hand quite often has her knickers on the line in full view when I go round for coffee! Not sure how opinions on this have skipped a generation in our family, but there you go 😂

OP I see nothing wrong with it, we're all adults with pants that need drying! I would make it a game in the future when said friend visits to ensure my most grottiest/risqué undergarments were out just to see her reaction, but that's just me!

penjil · 20/04/2024 15:27

My mother doesn't hang hers out on the line and never has.

Everyone else's in the family go out on the line.

But then, she's always been a bit "What'll the neighbours think'.

The sad thing is, they'll think nothing.... and so what if they do.

She's a size 10, so hardly has big bloomers flapping about out there.

caringcarer · 20/04/2024 15:32

That's what washing lines are for. Your friend is being ridiculous.

maddiemookins16mum · 20/04/2024 15:35

All our washing goes out all year, even in the winter (if the roof shed is dry, it goes out).

My size 18 M and S Bridget Jones pants are always flapping nicely in the breeze. Nobody cares.

Shallana · 20/04/2024 15:36

Sorry but I agree with your friend. I really don't want to be looking out of my bedroom window to see my neighbours bra and knickers blowing about on the line, that's a bit grim!

I just put mine on the indoor airer.
