To hang my underwear on the washing line?

lojanto · 20/04/2024 12:42

I've hung clothes out to dry a couple of times this year when the weather has been nicer.

My friend came over and was horrified that my underwear was hung out (a mix of bras, big pants, things etc.) with the rest of the clothes.

It's not something that's ever entered my mind before, am I BU?!

My garden is quite overlooked.

I do dry them outside, but not on the line. Usually somewhere lower down, which isn't as visible.

Whatineed · 20/04/2024 12:58

Tell her the sunshine naturally disinfects the gussets.

That'll end the conversation. 😂

Sera1989 · 20/04/2024 12:59

Does this apply to men's underwear too? Sounds very misogynistic as though the neighbours can't deal with seeing women's underwear or they can't help imagining you wearing it 🤮. It's just normal pants not crotchless bodysuits and BDSM gear! (I assume!)

I've had pants on the radiators when tradesmen etc. have been round because they needed drying and where would I hide wet pants. Was I being indecent by wanting to dry my washing 😱

Dweetfidilove · 20/04/2024 13:01

You’re only unreasonable if you’ve hidden them behind your larger garments or pegged them by the crotch.
Perfectly reasonable if they’re hung in full glory, pegged by the waist in a long tidy line .

Your poor friend - imagine being horrified by clean underwear 😂.

EVERYTHING I wash goes outside on the line. There's no room for it inside. Knickers, bras, dog beds, rugs, work uniform, everything. That prissy 'nobody must see my 'smalls' thing died out with the previous generation, didn't it?

My mother used to hang out underthings in the 'lean-to' (covered area just outside the back door), but that was mostly because they were a pain to bring in and take back out if the weather was showery.

justjudy · 20/04/2024 13:05

Yeah I'm a bit weird like this. I hang underwear on the inner lines so it's mostly covered by larger pieces of clothing on the outer lines. In winter, I dry them on the heated towel rail in our bathroom. It just feels more private, I don't know 🤷🏼‍♀️

Dearg · 20/04/2024 13:06

Oh gosh, I do have a friend that is horrified that her male neighbour hangs his underpants on the communal whirlies outside her flat and she can see them from her kitchen. 😂 I did have to tell her she was being very unreasonable in wanting to ask him to stop.

That’s why I use the things that have a lot of small clips, I have my pants and socks on them and it just grabbing one thing if it rains. Yep put out in its full glory.

BashfulClam · 20/04/2024 13:09

This type of thing is great as it takes up less line space and you can just grab it if it rains etc.

To hang my underwear on the washing line?
WhySoManySocks · 20/04/2024 13:09

My Mum does that. She hangs them out on a few parallel lines and always makes sure the underwear is shielded by sheets, Tshirts and similar. I guess she’s worried the neighbours will know she wears underwear?

chattyness · 20/04/2024 13:11

I hang ours outside I've got two of those sock hangers though and they hang below our high fence line. We're only overlooked by two upstairs windows of the next door but one neighbours but I don't care, If they want spend all day looking out of their bedroom windows at my " bigs" (I don't do smalls) on a sunny day then I hope they enjoy themselves ! I'm sure they don't though.

newnamethanks · 20/04/2024 13:11

On moving to new house with footpath running alongside one side of the garden, my son in law was miffed to find someone had hopped over the fence and helped himself to his expensive newly washed clothing, including underwear. New fence immediately.

icelollycraving · 20/04/2024 13:12

I don’t hang my underwear out but I do hang out dh’s and ds’ pants.
Mine may be mistaken sheets.
Although I know it is a bit mad to be so prudish, I don’t like the idea of people seeing them. We are overlooked by other homes.
Do what makes you comfortable. I wouldn’t think anything about seeing someone else’s pants on their line.

Librarybooker · 20/04/2024 13:14

Unless your locality has a knicker knicker I can’t see a problem

AgnesX · 20/04/2024 13:16

I hardly think the neighbours are going to have palpitations over my DHs beautifully arranged multicoloured Step 1s or my boring M&S knickers.

Everything gets hung out to dry. When it's dry enough that is.

Floppyelf · 20/04/2024 13:17

Hadalifeonce · 20/04/2024 12:43

What weirdo! Where should they hung to dry?

This.

festivallove · 20/04/2024 13:19

I hang underwear on the rotary line but usually on the inside lines. Two reasons being i hang small items on the inside lines and jeans etc on outside. Second reason being the garden is overlooked and I'd prefer people not seeing my underwear. However if there was no space on inside lines I've got no issue with hanging on the outside ones

frustratedashell · 20/04/2024 13:20

I used to work for an elderly rather prim and proper lady, I had to hang her "personal things" at the far end of the washing line where they neighbours couldn't see them.
I did have a laugh one day when I took her washing home to do it. She wore those knickers with a leg in them , down to her knees. I did the washing and put the knickers on the radiator to dry, when my husband came home I pointed them out and said do you like my new knickers? His face was a picture!!

Yes I do this on my airer that I stand on the patio

rockingbird · 20/04/2024 13:26

Never hang my undies out 🫣 I tumble dry all socks, pants and knickers & bras

Thickandquick · 20/04/2024 13:28

As long as you’re not air drying your arse after a shower, I see no issue.

Cheeesus · 20/04/2024 13:30

I CBA to peg out smaller things, that’s the reason I don’t.

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/04/2024 13:30

I do underwear inside and tops skirts trousers pjs etx outside so hiding inside stuff

Imtotallybored · 20/04/2024 13:34

Of course I hang my underwear on the line.
However the thread did put me in mind of growing up on a council estate in the North of England in the 1950s and 60s.
Every so often the local Knicker knocker would be active. Caused great consternation amongst the local "housewives"- being a "housewife" was a norm then. Great debate about who the knicker knocker could be and even greater debate about whether it was safe to keep hanging the underwear out - people couldn't afford to lose it when money was quite tight.
