Nobody eats oranges like this, do they?

I've just watched 14yo DS peel an orange (a small one), then stuff the whole thing into his mouth like an oversized grape. He says it's "easier".

Surely, nobody else does this? The correct way to eat any size of orange is segment by segment.

When kiwi fruits first became widely available (and were considered extremely exotic) I remember a girl at my school who ate them whole and unpeeled, as you would an apple. It must have been like eating a hamster.

The "correct" way when they first arrived in Britain in the late 70s was to cut them in half and scoop out the innards with a teaspoon. Then c2000 an Australian temp in the office said it made her laugh to see us do this as in Oz they just bite into them like an apple. We were all horrified and exclaimed "Surely not the skin!" But she assured us it was just like the texture if a baked potato skin.

So I gingerly tried it one day, still convinced she was winding us up but fuck me, I've never looked back! So much less mess and hassle than poncing about with a spoon.

Re. oranges, if they're very small, I'll maybe eat it in two halves, but not sure my mouth is capacious enough for a whole one.🍊

Hahah

I can't fit a whole tangerine in my mouth, never mind a small orange 😂!!!

I'd just be pleased they were eating fruit instead of crap tbh.

You've convinced me @TheOriginalEmu and @AuntiesWoodenLeg !

I hail from the days of halving them and eating them like a boiled egg or topping and tailing then peeling and slicing, but I will give the skin a go 😀

I don't eat oranges anymore as they give me migraines but when I did I had to pick every single scrap of pith off.

DS1 eats them whole, he eats apple cores as it's more convenient than having to, all of the kiwi and the weird crunchy bit of the banana that nobody else seems to like.

You can eat the skin. I never used to, but I do now and it's fine!

I don't understand how anyone can eat an orange whole. How big is his mouth?!?! Kumquat yes, orange no.

"Orange" was a bit of a misnomer. He was eating clementines, not proper oranges.

I've just added kiwi fruit to my grocery order for next week so I can give the skin a go. I reckon @SocksAndTheCity is right and it will be like eating a hamster.

I'm very grateful that DS eats so much fruit. Less grateful for finding apple core and orange peel left all over the house though, in various states of decomposition.

Kiwi skin is really nice!

Nooooo!!!

I'm not a fan of raspberries and can't even eat a peach unpeeled, let alone a kiwi fruit.

Before easy peeler, satsuma type things, there was only one way to eat an orange. Cut it in half and then eat each half by biting in to the flesh and sucking / scraping it out with your teeth. When you had got all the best bit thus you turned the orange half inside out and scraped out the remaining bits of orange with your teeth.

Then repeat with the other half orange.

Then spend a while picking all the shreds of orange from your teeth and rubbing your face because the skin would usually sting a bit by now.

Actual correct procedure is to quarter the orange, consume the flesh in this manner and then wear the quarter of peel like a gumshield so you appear to have orange teeth.

I'd only worry that he's more likely to choke with such a large chunk of food in his mouth. I once saw a grown man choking on an orange and, if it wasn't for the quick action of an off- duty policeman nearby, he would definitely have died.
