Nobody eats oranges like this, do they?

I've just watched 14yo DS peel an orange (a small one), then stuff the whole thing into his mouth like an oversized grape. He says it's "easier".

Surely, nobody else does this? The correct way to eat any size of orange is segment by segment.

“Easier” 😂😂

I love teens.

AmaryllisChorus · 20/04/2024 18:27

Please tell him not to do that. My brother did that once when he was younger and choked on the fibrous pithy bit in the middle. We had to turn him upside down because he was turning purple.

One segment at a time!

Ukholidaysaregreat · 20/04/2024 18:27

This thread has really made me laugh. I think from a Health and Safety perspective you need to split the orange into smaller amounts. I once choked violently on just one segment of orange and had to be shaken by the ankles! None of my family having been First Aid trained evidently or they could have just smacked me on the back. So I say eat them individually.

OMG! Cross post! Dangerous Orange snacks!

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 20/04/2024 18:29

Small easy peelers I eat a few segments at a time, not a whole orange. Larger ones I don't peel but instead quarter and just leave the peel when eating. Have to be quatered by equater and then pole to pole to reveal the flesh rather than segmenting pole to pole both times.

Blingismything · 20/04/2024 18:32

The 'fancy edible paper' had me in literal stitches. 😂

Gorgonemilezola · 20/04/2024 18:33

I love the bit in Cranford where Miss Matty and Miss Deborah Jenkyns repair to their rooms to suck their oranges as they cannot be eaten in a genteel fashion.

Iloveanicegarden · 20/04/2024 18:36

When I was teaching Home Ec one of the first things the students prepared (to develop knife skills ) was fruit salad. I would take great delight when demonstrating to tell them to make sure they got 'all the pith off' It always got a laugh!

nineseasaway · 20/04/2024 18:39

I’d be more worried at choking eating it that way..

Weird synchronicity. Let that be a warning from the universe to your son, @BlowDryRat Grin

NavyTiger · 20/04/2024 18:51

I made my son a boiled egg once for lunch walked out the room 2 seconds to get a spoon to come back to him eating the whole egg shell and all

UghFletcher · 20/04/2024 19:03

I thought you were going to say chocolate orange 🍊

Easy peelers I could probably do a whole one, an actual orange I need to slice up and remove the pith

TellerTuesday · 20/04/2024 19:35

I can't imagine how long it would take to chew that way and the juice dripping down your face. So no, wouldn't be my chosen method.

I do have a (weird) friend that used to eat an onion like an apple though

desperatedaysareover · 20/04/2024 11:27

Mine does this, it’s more hygienic apparently. He’s got form, since he was about three he'd eat strawberries with the stalks on and the other day attempted to eat a muffin, case and all (he thought it was ‘fancy edible paper’ God help him) so at this point I’m just glad he will peel his bananas.

This should get an award for ‘post of the day’ 😀

When kiwi fruits first became widely available (and were considered extremely exotic) I remember a girl at my school who ate them whole and unpeeled, as you would an apple. It must have been like eating a hamster.

Kiwi skin is really nice!

Miners used to eat onions like that. The coal dust in their throats affected their sense of taste.

sweatervest · 20/04/2024 19:55

i think this should be on tiktok asap tbh. i truly love the thought of that. hats off to the hidden talent of your ds, seriously.

I don't do either. I hate peeling oranges, as opposed to easy peel citrus like satsumas etc. I cut one first into quarters, then each quarter crosswise into eighths, and eat it that way.

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/04/2024 19:56

A child in my class started to eat a banana sideways with the peel on. I don't think she'd ever seen one before.

I always eat the skin on kiwi fruits too, can't understand why you wouldn't!

WibblyWobblyWeeble · 20/04/2024 19:57

I quarter them, then bite into each quarter.

GingerScallop · 20/04/2024 20:00

Mine eats lemons like apples. With or without peel. Last time we ordered fish and chips then noted none of us had lemons. I looked up to see him finishing the 4th lemon wedge. Inside all eaten up and some of rind eaten up.
At least they are getting vitamin C OP

You can eat the skin. I never used to, but I do now and it's fine!

I don't understand how anyone can eat an orange whole. How big is his mouth?!?! Kumquat yes, orange no.

5foot5 · 20/04/2024 20:53

Before easy peeler, satsuma type things, there was only one way to eat an orange. Cut it in half and then eat each half by biting in to the flesh and sucking / scraping it out with your teeth. When you had got all the best bit thus you turned the orange half inside out and scraped out the remaining bits of orange with your teeth.

Then repeat with the other half orange.

Then spend a while picking all the shreds of orange from your teeth and rubbing your face because the skin would usually sting a bit by now.
