To wonder why people are so horrid?

I now work for NHS. Most people are lovely. About 6 years ago though I did my 1st day work experience for NHS to decide if I should train.
I asked a ( make%, intimidating)staff member where the ladies was and he told me. I took a wrong turn and he viciously and loudly bellowed " listen would you."
To a guest!
Whist a student also met a few like rhis.why?
No idea why it still irks me but I think it has stuck as it was my 1st experience in hospital. My current one is largely lovely

The NHS is famous for its bullying culture I'm surprised you've back there to work to be honest.

INeedAnotherName · 19/04/2024 08:26

You didn't listen properly so you got it wrong.

In a medical place getting it wrong could cost other people their lives.

ilovesooty · 19/04/2024 08:28

6 years ago? And your current workplace is OK?

Being rude to people in a medical place could also cost other people their lives. There's a whole campaign about this https://www.civilitysaveslives.com/

It's grim knowing there are people like that working in the NHS, OP. Luckily they are a minority in my experience too.

Are you still ruminating on a minor incident SIX years ago ?

Seriously? That’s a reach! Someone got lost so it was ok to be unpleasant because they might kill a patient?! I have worked in the nhs for 30 years and would consider this rudeness unacceptable. Raise your bar!

ssd · 19/04/2024 08:47

I cant remember feck all from 6 years ago🤷‍♀️

She asked for directions to the toilet - it's hardly life-threatening 🙄

I still remember clearly the horrible and frankly abusive treatment I received in an NHS hospital 45 years ago.
Edit. I was a patient and it involved verbal bullying, physical bullying ( pulled from a bed and forced to walk even though I said I couldn’t. I fainted and was verbally abused) The list goes on. This happened over 3-4 days.

OpalMarathonUlay · 19/04/2024 08:51

I have been a consultant for decades and my one message to my junior doctors is ‘when everyone around you is being rude and unpleasant, never stoop to their level’. I am no doormat but maintain high standards of politeness no matter the situation. It means that I am held in high regard in my trust and people help me when needed.

I feel sorry for rude people like that. They must not be happy and where is the fun in that behaviour? I love having rewarding relationships with people. Both colleagues and patients. You don’t get that by being rude and hostile.

I'm sorry you experienced that, but your situation and the OP's aren't comparable.

LakeTiticaca · 19/04/2024 10:54

Lots of people around like this. On my first day at a new job the phone started ringing, I darent answer it, my trainer had nipped away for a couple of minutes. One of the female managers was walking past and shouted, get that phone answered, don't just stand there!!
I was so embarrassed. I felt like a 16 year old, not the 40 year old woman I was . It was a large organisation with different sites and each site I worked at seemed to be populated with vicious nasty, bitchy female managers, whereas the male managers were always lovely

Bloody hell give it a rest. She was asking were the bogs were, not doing open heart surgery,!!

malificent7 · 19/04/2024 12:24

Pmsl at getting lost on the way to the loo being life threatening!

frankentall · 19/04/2024 12:30

I have often wondered what nasty people get out of it, especially ex dp. It's a mystery to me.

Love this. I worked in the NHS for years and it was the most toxic workplace |'ve ever experienced. Across the board from clinical to admin staff.

RabbitsRock · 19/04/2024 13:11

I feel sorry for people who treat others badly. If I get a rude customer at work, I’m often extra nice which sometimes takes the wind out of their sails! But I try to think what that person might be going through. I had a really grumpy abrupt lady at my till & was just about to say something about her manner when she told me that her husband had died a couple of days ago. Having said that, some folks are just arseholes 🤣

Surely you can see that this is in no way comparable to having someone be snarky at you for getting lost on the way to the loo?

I think you sound mildly snowflaky, OP -- you also say you were a 'guest' in this man's workplace You were on work experience. Really not the same thing.

leafybrew · 19/04/2024 13:16

Hmm - he wasn't a nice person, but maybe it's time to move on now?

danitheastrologer · 19/04/2024 13:18

It's funny how bad stuff sticks in your mind more than the overwhelming good stuff. The guy is a dick just let it go I'm sure someone has taken a grievance out on him since then if that's his general attitude.

spookehtooth · 19/04/2024 13:41

Surprised at the harsh responses, in particular contexts otherwise little things do stick in people's minds.

Most of the time, people aren't trying to be difficult and what's obvious to us isn't so for them and vice versa, I'm sure nobody here is perfect!

I don't always have the right attitude when not heard or misunderstood, but I try really hard at it, because its really important and from time to time people express appreciation that reminds me why I do it. Sometimes too, I'm on the recieving end of other people doing the same, and pick up tips on doing better

LOL. Getting lost wandering around looking for the loo could cost someone's life?

Remind me never to ask you for directions...
