Touching items in supermarket bakery with your hands

37anddone · 15/04/2024 10:07

I think almost every time I have tried to use the 'fresh bakery' in the supermarket (you know, all the breads and whatnot out for you to pick from) - someone has come over and started moving them around with their bare hands.

Not picking one up to take (questionable but tolerable), actually moving items on top out of the way to get the item they want. Customers this is, not the staff.

YABU - why not, you'd do it in the fruit and veg aisle

YANBU - bad manners

Maybe I'm just a dirty slattern but if I don't see it, it hasn't happened. I'll happily buy pastries and bread from Lidl. Not got the plague yet!

TimeandMotion · 15/04/2024 14:53

Good point @Applescruffle , it was in fact “You ain’t my muvva!” rather than “You’re not my Mum!” 😀

Tbh even the baskets and trollies in some supermarkets put me off. It’s usually the very small Express type places - grim plastic baskets covered in gunge … I tend to stride boldly in and just grab the couple of items I need in my hands and race straight to the checkout.

Do the handles and general shopping trolleys get sanitised? I'm not referring to during covid times.

I personally do not care as I don't tend to chew them

CatCatastrophe · 15/04/2024 14:55

I can’t imagine exposure to manhandled baked goods has a significant impact on many people’s health. I can live with the knowledge that my doughnut might have been inappropriately poked before consumption.

Oooeeeoooaa · 15/04/2024 14:56

It's just one massive trust based exercise isn't it?
Tongs are your friend as far as I'm concerned. I even try to reach towards the back. Sneezes can travel some distance, so really, nothing is safe.

Currently eating a roll from Lidl bakery, I have one most days. Not dead yet!

Of course I don't expect visitors to walk through a disinfectant foot bath when visiting. People would think I'm crazy.

Because I already have a full body "sheep dip" system in my front garden the everybody is forced to use. A foot bath would be pointless after that.

You are all filthy animals. My visitors shower in neat bleach. Or they would if I ever had any.

BUT HAS YOUR NEAT BLEACH BEEN BLESSED BY THE POPE?

ANSWER ME OR I SHALL SHOUT SOME MORE.

This is why I insist on washing my sourdough before eating it. My family says it ruins the bread but I'm not taking any chances

Oughta start this too....😁

OF COURSE IT HAS. And I made him wash his hands before he blessed it.

I was actually baptized in Holy Bleach. But I'm sure you have a lovely stinking hovel home

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 15/04/2024 15:20

I'm having trouble reconciling this thread which is full of grimy confessions to the shower thread where the consensus seems to be that showering less than twice a day is disgusting Confused

I love Lidl bakery. I also use the tongs provided, I’ve never gotten sick from eating anything from there.

Same!!

LaFidola · 15/04/2024 15:24

I love the bakery section.

I don't use tongs. I just pick up the bread I want without touching anything else.

My toddler poked a cake the other day.

I assumed the people who care about this kind of thing probably don't use the bakery section.

(I did stop the toddler, I'm not all bad!)

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 15/04/2024 15:26

I once saw a man pull a fresh loaf of bread out of it's packet, squeezed it a few times, put it back in, back on the bakery racks and walk off

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/04/2024 15:33

Applescruffle · 15/04/2024 11:22

I have both a sheep dip AND a disinfectant bath and both are stocked with Holy water, blessed by the pope himself

But I'm sure you are both trying your best

I have all this. Plus haz-mat suits for all guests.

Sunnytwobridges · 15/04/2024 15:33

This is why I don't eat any food that's exposed like this, unless it's fruits and veggies. Luckily most of the places I shop at the baked goods are wrapped up.

CaliforniaHereWeCome1 · 15/04/2024 15:36

YANBU I never buy anything uncovered. I went to my local farmers market on the weekend and there were flies crawling on the uncovered cheeses 🤢

My hovel is indeed very lovely, though I do sometimes wonder what germs may be lurking in its padded walls, floor and ceiling.

Blackcats7 · 15/04/2024 15:49

I never eat food that has been open to the public to touch/ sneeze on etc.

In store bakeries or buffets are a huge no from me.

pontipinemum · 15/04/2024 15:54

In Rome last year the shop near where I stayed had the breads in a clear plastic thing and you used a paddle to move out what you wanted. It seemed very good. But I am often put off in shops but I do still buy things. I use the tongs to get rolls etc from the back.

AzureBlue99 · 15/04/2024 16:12

Saw a guy with his partner in Waitrose in sweatpants several times around the store, each time with his hands down the sweatpants jiggling his tackle.

Went to the bakery, was looking at the loose rolls. Ball jiggler took his hand out of sweatpants and started touching the bread. Needless to say I didn't buy any, but I was absolutely fuming, and I seriously had to bite back, you dirty bastard. His girlfriend was oblivious. Not her role to police him but if you were walking around store with someone who was masturbating, you would notice wouldn't you?

Yeah, I know I mentioned Waitrose before the snipers reference it.

WoollyRosebud · 15/04/2024 16:21

I remember many years ago standing outside the local bakery shop waiting for a bus. I always used to enjoy a quiet drool over the cakes in the window. One of the staff dropped a load of bread rolls, picked them up off the floor and added them to the display for sale. I never shopped there again

LoobyDop · 15/04/2024 16:21

Surely the WHOLE POINT of Waitrose is to avoid that kind of thing.
