Customer’s absurd suggestion

Auburngal · 14/04/2024 17:28

Customer is one of those who insists on going to us when it’s extremely busy. As per usual we are short staffed - which is the case for many retailers. Again it’s because staff leave as fed up with the rude and aggressive behaviour from customers. In fact - some customers are bullies. As when they shout at me, I get the same feelings that I got from bullying at school.

She suggested that we should be on call on our days off! What a bloody ridiculous idea! I want my days off to relax etc. If any retailer had this option- no one would take it up!

Ha. When I worked in retail I used to ignore my phone on my days off in case it was my manager wanting me to come in because someone else had called in sick. Everyone needs time off to rest and recharge.

EveryoneJapan · 14/04/2024 17:32

Yeah, some people are unhinged.

Greywitch2 · 14/04/2024 17:44

I couldn't have resisted retorting, 'I'm a shop assistant - not an orthopaedic surgeon, love'.

On call. Jesus.

TeabySea · 14/04/2024 17:45

Does this customer understand what "Day off" means? I'd have to ask them exactly what they meant by day off.

Love this 😂😂

Ilovemyshed · 14/04/2024 18:02

What does this even mean? Why does this customer seem to think they can make suggestions on when you work or not. Just ignore and work your hours.

I have said to customers that’s it’s a legal requirement for us to have days off, breaks, annual leave and no legal requirement to open a till as too impatient to wait!

They don’t know how to respond.

Love ending a customer’s moaning

I own a small business and most people are lovely. However, I simply do not buy the phrase 'the customer is always right'. IME the customer can be downright fucking rude, and I would have no hesitation in telling them so and asking them not to come back.

The actual quote is ‘the customer is always right in matters of taste’. It’s doesn’t mean that customers can just be dicks but they think telling half a quote gives them a right to act like a fud!

AmazingBouncingFerret · 14/04/2024 19:07

I work in a coffee shop and had a regular customer that is always slightly chaotic anyway, moaning about some road closures and how long it took to get into town, I respond with “oh you must be near me then because, same!” She shook her head and was very insistent that they were nowhere near me, and bizarrely, said “you wouldn’t know them” I had to gently let her know that I didn’t live in the shop and I do have a home that I go to! Grin

Those who say that dreadful phrase are NEVER right. Plus NEVER worked in retail!

One example I can recall is a customer wanting to return a swimsuit. The hygiene tape on gusset was removed and there were skid marks on there 🤮

I refused to do a refund. “Customer is always right” blurted the woman. I said to her “would you have bought this swimsuit in this condition?”

“Certainly not”

”We can only issue refunds if non faulty items are in sellable condition”

Customer left in a huff

We're short staffed at my work, I work in a specialised area so can't just call random staff to help, the queue was massive and a customer started shouting call more staff, put more staff on, you need more staff! I was like where do I get these staff from? She was really shouting you need more staff now! We're advertising but unless people actually apply there's nothing we can do! And if you join a massive queue you have to be prepared to wait!

I learned the other week that the customer is always right quote is cut down from the original which is

‘The customer is always right in matters of taste.’

So don’t judge the ugly jumper they want to buy or if they’d like 7 sugars in their coffee not that they can be despotic tyrants barking abuse and orders and wanting the laws of physics themselves to be bent to their will.

There’s been a couple of threads on here recently about poor customer service.

I don’t think customer service is getting worse, I think the customers are.
Rude, entitled, selfish arseholes

Needmorelego · 14/04/2024 19:23

Yesterday I went to a very large Tesco on the very edges of London.
Saturday afternoon - place was like a ghost town. They had several checkouts open with staff sat there literally twiddling their thumbs.
@Auburngal if your customer moans again tell them to move to Orpington 😂

Thecastle1 · 14/04/2024 19:24

God forbid you're not there to serve their every need 24hrs, 7 days a week

Lol

Auburngal · 14/04/2024 19:29

It was dead at my work yesterday afternoon.

The Grand National perhaps?

@Auburngal maybe?
(Although I don't know a single person who would be interested in watching that 🤔)
It was slightly eerie 😂

@Needmorelego
Really?
It’s one of the biggest races in the world, it’s watched by about 500 million worldwide every year.

Fannyfiggs · 14/04/2024 19:54

Would you not just love to tell them to shut the fuck up 🤣

As a customer and on the rare occasion I've heard someone be rude to the staff I've stepped in and told them not to speak to them like that. I've not had a slap yet so I'll continue to call out bad customer behaviour in shops. There's just no need for it.

pelotonaddiction · 14/04/2024 20:01

Every customer likes to ring us at 9am on a Monday morning then complain it's busy/there is a queue (not time critical stuff)
Ring us on a Wednesday at 6pm or a Saturday and there's no queue

I've worked on and off in retail, call centre, care work, pubs etc all my life and I would say the last year has been the absolute worst for entitled, demanding and rude customers. They like to tell me I'm unhelpful when what they mean is they didn't get what they want

I've said many times if all staff dealing with customers in every area had 24hrs to say what they wanted, we could solve 99% of the issues....

MrsToothyBitch · 14/04/2024 21:07

YANBU. When I worked in retail I always said the most under used word in retail by the staff was "no". The most under used words by customers were "please" and "thank you".

SoupChicken · 14/04/2024 21:12

I work in an office, it’s accountancy, there is nothing we do that could be classed as ‘urgent’ that couldn’t wait 24 hours, yet clients get so annoyed that I only
work 4 days a week, I’ve had complaints sent to my manager before.

Last week I had an email from someone saying they were on the phone trying to ring me, why wasn’t I answering, it took all my strength not to send a sarcastic reply saying I was on the phone to someone else at the time.

Maverickess · 14/04/2024 21:16

"The customer is always right"

Not on my shift they're not 🤣

Rudeness abounds when you're in any sort of customer service, and it's definitely increased. And there's a very real attitude that you should not just accept any and all abuse or shitty behaviour, but be I don't know - grateful? Maybe for it as well, certainly not dare complain about it, and that it's to be expected and part of the job. It's a complete bullshit excuse that people use to justify what they know is poor behaviour, because they want to behave that way with impunity. And if you don't accept it happily then it's poor customer service 🤷🏼‍♀️.

It's like the world is angry and anyone in customer service of any description is the punch bag.
