To think Rishi will use WW3 as a reason to govern indefinitely

I know I am being VERY cynical here but I think Rishi is waiting for any possible reason to not call an election - it’s very possible that the attacks overnight in the Middle East will give him that reason. They’ll invoke a war cabinet or some mad reason and then stay in power.

He just smirks and laughs every time someone asks him about an election- he needs to call one by November under the terms of our current Parliament.

I am probably being Mega cynical and OTT but I don’t trust the self serving Tories currently in power to do anything that is democratic or in the best interest of the country- they just want to remain in power!!

@Zonder its massively rogue. It amazes me how people can’t see it. It’s been pillaged and asset stripped over many years - it’s really not too far of a stretch to think the tories will go even more rogue. Some of the laws that they have tried to get in are massively undemocratic and they are gagging to leave the ECHR too.

Don’t be so silly.

Glasto73lover · 14/04/2024 09:22

@Tippexy I am obviously being a bit tongue in cheek with my post!

But it does amaze me how many people accept some of the stuff that has happened like it’s totally normal in a democratic country - it’s really not.

That was my thought this morning too. I can definitely see some pompous comments coming up when questioned about when the election will be about how the world needs stability etc etc.

As for all the 'don't be ridiculous comments,' hopefully, maybe even probably, they are justified, but the Tories have done so many absolutely reprehensible things over the last few years I don't know how anyone can be so sure. Who would have thought they would have lied to the Queen to illegally prorogue parliament for their own ends, to give just one example?

Glasto73lover · 14/04/2024 09:41

@pinotnow exactly.

There has been some fire stoking in the Falklands again too and a refusal to discuss that issue with Argentina. It’s long overdue a proper conversation.

I don’t think you are being cynical, I think you are a conspiracy theorist. Cynicism is usually rooted in some sort of reality. You are talking about a coup and then a dictatorship? You really think Sunak is about to stage a political coup?

Noicant · 14/04/2024 09:49

I think this explains some elements of the left, they really are so utterly unhinged about tories that they actually think this stuff.

Besides the current batch are too incompetent to stage a coup.

CranfordScones · 14/04/2024 09:55

He can call an election whenever he likes up to the end of the parliamentary term. That's how our system works. Sunak doesn't dissolve parliament, the King does.

We briefly had the Fixed Term Parliament Act, initiated at the instigation of the LibDems under the coalition government, but Labour had also strongly supported the idea in the past.

There were siren voices from some very wise people at the time. And those voices were proved entirely correct - it was a disaster. But it seemed like a good idea at the time to a bunch of politicians pursuing whatever abstract noun was fashionable that month and who can't think through the consequences of their ideas.

You should think about seeing your GP if you're genuinely having paranoid delusions.

redboxer321 · 14/04/2024 10:01

This is a different level of crackers, OP.
I don't even think RS likes being PM. I think he will be glad when it's over. It's just he can't find a way out without losing face.

ThreeFeetTall · 14/04/2024 10:05

I think he can't wait to get back to Goldman sacs and not have to pretend to like some of the other members of cabinet!

BringMeSunshineAllDayLong · 14/04/2024 10:06

Given that the government he worked in illegally prorogued parliament it's not that much of a stretch. This group of vile bastards have done more to ruin the public's faith in institutions than any in my lifetime.

Notreat · 14/04/2024 10:09

I would never vote for him as I hate his policies. But I think he is a fairly decent person. I don't think he is a Boris Johnson who egged on by Dominic Cummings absolutely would try that

He probably bombed personally them himself. Tiny grinning twat.

😂😂😂

Timy grinning twat. Love this!

A snapshot into my life

"One day, terrorists will seize 4 airliners simultaneously and fly them into buildings killing thousands of innocent people"

"You're being ridiculous"

Since then, my bar for "it could happen" is really low.

PollyPeachum · 14/04/2024 10:39

Who are you? Angela Rayner. What a goady thread!
What War? What World wide War?
Anyway Boris would come back and insist on identifying as Churchill.

GingerPirate · 14/04/2024 12:06

Oh, come on.
Does he have the balls to do this?
What about support?

SerendipityJane · 15/04/2024 10:19

Is this the first drip in a journey to "we can't possibly have an election now" ?

Lord Cameron’s allies including former chancellor George Osborne and ex-communications chief Andy Coulson have suggested that the Foreign Secretary should remain in post due to his clout on the world stage at a time of international crisis.

Lord Cameron dismisses idea of serving under Starmer’s Labour

The Foreign Secretary dismissed the idea floated by his allies that he could stay on under a Labour government.

Greenbather · 15/04/2024 10:51

How ridiculous. The above article also makes it clear that there is an upcoming GE that will not be stopped for any reason.

It just makes it clear that DC will not continue his role under the Labour govt which can't be a surprise to anyone surely.

Rishi isn't even governing now, he is floundering.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 15/04/2024 20:59

I hope not but you are not necessary being unreasonable to be concerned. The illegal proroguing if parliament to force Brexit through proved the Tories are capable of anything. Including Reece-Mogg lying to the Queen.

He's probably a bit busy doing whatever he will continue to do come the glorious revolution general election. Basically continuing his career that has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with making loads of money through business.

Chatonette · 15/04/2024 21:32

Nah. Now Donald Trump…yes, I can 100% see him doing this. He’s NOT leaving once he is back in office.
