Only posting here as no other post that I could see. 7 people dead. He stabbed a 9 month old baby. The baby's mum passed it to someone else . Mum has just died. WHat the feck is wrong with people? Thank goodness a police inspector went in on her own and shot him. So sad. It's where my family grew up and just a normal part of Australia. Hate to say it but the world is awful.

You have no idea what you or your DH would do in that situation.

I witnessed a murder many years ago - I froze, literally froze to the spot whilst 3 people were stabbed. It's the most surreal experience ever to have a mundane Monday morning interrupted by something so horrific - your brain takes a while to even comprehend what is happening right in front of you. I think unless you're cornered and have no choice but to react the vast majority would remove themselves from the danger as soon as they could.

Those that intervene are extremely rare.

I agree. I have no idea what DP would do, and selfishly I hope he wouldn’t intervene as we have 2 small children and need him. He’s intervened in several fights over the years that he could’ve easily walked away from but even that is miles away from a frenzied knife attacker - he had some broken bones in his hand once but his life was not in danger. Have a go heroes are very rare and nobody knows who they would be until it happens.

I was surprised at how many men just ran away. I know that my DH would have rugby tackled him to the ground.

I do wonder when this type of thing happens, whether the offender might have a brain injury or something. My neighbour had a condition where he hallucinated and saw monsters and aliens etc. I like to think it's that, rather than someone just being evil for the sake of it.

None of us know how we'd react in such a situation and it s pretty tasteless to be boasting about what you think your husband would do, I'm sure all the traumatized bystanders will buck their ideas up next time

HelloMiss · 14/04/2024 12:26

I'm guessing he was off his meds. Schizophrenia is easily treated with the right meds.... I see this all the time at work when meds are refused

Let's hope there's never a shortage of medication

PassingStranger · 14/04/2024 12:36

It's dreadful news, poor baby being left without mum. Same as the other week in Bradford.

NotTram · 14/04/2024 12:46

So so sad 😞

You know no such thing, and you're very naive if you think you do.

Having been in life threatening situations a couple of times, I have seen people react in utterly out of character ways. You have no idea how you or anyone you know would react until it happens to you.

PrattleTime · 14/04/2024 12:52

I was walking in woods with my dog and a man in a skull balaclava approached me and I was completely rooted to the spot. I couldn't move a muscle. I would have never thought in a million years that's what I would have done.

And my dad's bigger than your dad.

GreyTonkinese · 14/04/2024 12:58

A relative of my husband intervened in an incident where a man was beating up his partner. He was killed. She was fine. I tell my husband not to be a hero. I am not apologetic about this.

MêmePasPeur · 14/04/2024 13:05

Just heartbreaking. That poor baby. And that heroic police officer.

I know I am probably being U but as someone with schizophrenia I just want to remind people that those living with severe mental illness are much more likely to be the victims of violent crime than the perpetrators.

Neodymium · 14/04/2024 13:22

The bollard guy tried to take him on. He didn’t go near him though the attacker seemed to just be targeting women.

in the chaos of everything I doubt anyone would have been able to do much crowded shopping centre so many people running and yelling it would have been panic and confusion and probably initially no one knew exactly who it was. I haven’t seen but I imagine the people who were killed were at the start before anyone understood what was going on then everyone ran away and he just wandered about. The videos I have seen he is walking though the centre with no people nearby they all fled into shops ect

OdeToBarney · 15/04/2024 08:10

Police have confirmed he was targeting women. I still feel so sick and sad.

No, they haven't.

Did I dream the BBC article I read this morning? It was 6.30am and I was still half asleep, but?

They have said they are certainly looking into it as part of their investigation, due to the disproportionate amount of women attacked, but it has not been confirmed.

Sorry, but if they're confident enough to say it was "obvious", that's good enough for me.

The killer has been named and plenty of background information shared, in Australian/Sydney newspapers.

mental health
owns a storage unit
moved from another part of Aus.

Anything else?

His demeanour on the video was familiar

What do you mean?

HebburnPokemon · 15/04/2024 10:10

Ignore my last post, I see quite a lot has been released about this man after I last checked.

In a news report I just watched, the police officer referred to him as a "gentleman" - this boiled my piss. I know it's just a turn of phrase but still.

Mellowmallow201 · 14/04/2024 07:32

He backed away from alot of men who were holding their ground. Why did he do that? 5 out of the 6 were women. Plus he attacked a young baby. Looks like he's a coward and attacked women and a baby who were more vulnerable.

I would say this is a gender based attack. Wouldn't surprise me if he was an incel

I agree and it seems it could be - his father has been quoted and reported on the bbc as saying he wanted a girlfriend, had no social skills and was frustrated.

There are reports of another stabbing in Sydney, in a church. What sad times we are living in.

This one was horrible as it was live streamed on YouTube, as the church live stream all services (like a lot of churches do) after covid. Just a horrible world we are living in currently.

QueenMegan · 15/04/2024 12:06

It's utterly heartbreaking. Listening to his parents talk about him how much they tried to help him.
Mental illness can affect anyone.
His poor victims.
No one knows how to react in the face of danger.

BobShark · 15/04/2024 12:12

Those mentioned he was known to police, this was a moving on order from sleeping rough in 'The Rocks' area of the city in Sydney's, not for any violence.

BobShark · 15/04/2024 12:15

@mynameiscalypso the killer was unknown to all victims, this was not a personal attack, he was a homeless schizophrenic off his meds and possibly in a drug induced psychosis.
