To feel very sad about what happened in Bondi today

Only posting here as no other post that I could see. 7 people dead. He stabbed a 9 month old baby. The baby's mum passed it to someone else . Mum has just died. WHat the feck is wrong with people? Thank goodness a police inspector went in on her own and shot him. So sad. It's where my family grew up and just a normal part of Australia. Hate to say it but the world is awful.

I was driving to my friends when I heard this and had to steady myself as was going around a roundabout. How absolutely horrific. I'm tearing up now. We can all empathise as it's something a lot of us would be doing. Plus just the thought of innocent people going about their day. Not only will it affect those stabbed but those present. Families friends.

Honestly the world can be so so awful 😞 You're literally not safe anywhere.

agent765 · 13/04/2024 19:49

Did I read that he was known to the police?

This is sad and awful and getting too common.

There is so little we can do to protect ourselves against whirlwind attacks like these. I downloaded an app called ProtectUK. I think it relies more on the police being aware of impending acts of terrorism but it has some useful info on awareness and what to do if something happens in front of you.

The second mother to be stabbed to death whilst out with her baby in a week. Awful.

Yes I was just thinking this. Can't seem to find a thread about that other Mum?

Just awful.

that was in the UK. stabbed by her husband. bastard

Pigeonqueen · 13/04/2024 20:20

I think things like this are sadly increasing. Quite similar to the horrific Nottingham killings last year. I think there are huge consequences to lack of intervention in mental health. I’m convinced the man must have mental health issues until revealed otherwise. What a mess the world is becoming.

HelloMiss · 13/04/2024 21:30

Known to police so yes I'd say mental health issues

His demeanour on the video was familiar

Hakunatomato · 13/04/2024 21:36

I have been to the centre many times. It is a lot smaller than the Westfields in this country, or Bluewater. I can’t stop thinking about that poor little baby. At only 9 months there’s a good chance Mum was still feeding her. I spoke to my friends in Bondi, as they normally go the gym there and hang out at Westfield on a Saturday. They were at a party instead. Apparently the whole area is in complete shock, and there is such a sombre atmosphere.

Hucklescar · 13/04/2024 21:40

I can’t stop thinking of it. It makes my blood run cold thinking of that poor baby, even if she survives the emergency surgery, it’s going to taint her whole life. Fucking hell. Why are some people so evil and detached from empathy? 😔
I lived on Bondi Junction when I was in my twenties and I remember going to the mall often. There was an amazing bookshop at the entrance which you could sit in for hours, the thought of how utterly terrified the workers and customers must have been turns my stomach.

StartupRepair · 13/04/2024 21:41

That Westfield is just such a kind of normal , banal place to be.. just so shocking. That poor mother who died desperately handed her baby to people nearby to look after.

LuckysDadsHat · 13/04/2024 21:50

I cannot believe there are not more threads on this. A new mum and her 9 month old baby just horrific. And the other 5 people killed. I do weep for humanity in the future, that these occurrences seem to be happening more and more frequently.

Ofmince · 13/04/2024 21:51

It is so awful.

The footage of the lone female police officer sprinting through the shopping centre gives me some hope that there are still some decent people in the world. But those poor people, poor baby, poor mum.

Five of the six victims who have died so far are women.

I am not sure if they have included the perpetrator’s death in the total of deaths. If do, that would make him the only man.

Infectiousdisease · 13/04/2024 21:56

So so sad, sending love to all Aussies from the UK 💕💔

I don't care a jot what religion/race/sex they are. They are the lowest of the low, and I am thankful they were shot dead and can never inflict death and pain on anyone ever again.

mynameiscalypso · 13/04/2024 21:59

I saw on Twitter that the killer is believed to be the mother's ex partner. Has that been reported anyway or is it just speculation? Whatever has happened, it's just awful.

Speculation I think. The husband was at the hospital with her and no-one has mentioned an ex partner.

I really don't care who it was, they are a sick cunt who doesn't deserve to live.

mynameiscalypso · 13/04/2024 22:05

@LuckysDadsHat Thanks for confirming that it's unlikely to be true. And 100% agree on the rest of your post.

GoodnightAdeline · 13/04/2024 22:08

It’s utterly tragic. I can’t stop thinking about that poor lady - 9 month old baby, family life just beginning, then this happens. I hope her husband is receiving a lot of support.

And waking up in hospital not knowing where mum or her feed is. Mum is their whole world. It makes me feel sick. She’s pictured with a husband in photos. I hope the baby pulls through surgery.
It’s devastating. I read about the mum being looked after by store staff and then later saw she had died it’s so upsetting I can’t stop thinking about it.

If it does turn out that he specifically targeted women because of personal grievances, I think it should be labelled a terrorist attack personally.

julesagainstana · 13/04/2024 23:59

I’m feeling just awful about it, first day of the school holidays so everyone’s out and about </3 I had planned to be there after work to treat myself to some shopping but decided not to on a whim :( it’s just heartbreaking knowing so much of your own community was in the centre and watching the public’s reaction quickly turn to racism when we still really don’t know what happened….

margolyes · 14/04/2024 01:16

Apparently schizophrenic. Unknown to the poor mum. Another victim who died was the daughter of a very well known media businessman in Australia. She was 25yo and newly engaged ( to a police officer). They are the only 2 that I have seen named.
Two victims were apparently not Australian and they are trying to contact relatives overseas.
The little baby, Harriet ,seems to be doing ok ( 2 men compressed her wounds with clothes after mum threw her to them.) The poor father, who wasn't at the shops, is now sitting with the baby in hospital.

Sorry about the poll. I tried to delete it.

Both incorrect. The naming of the Jewish young man is especially horrendous, given as it's completely incorrect.

The assailant was a 40 year old man from Queensland named Joel Cauchi. He apparently had mental health issues, was known to police. There are no idealist links at this stage.
