To think these Olympics uniforms are sexist and degrading?

Nike has revealed the US team's uniforms for their athletes. The men's one is knee length shorts and a vest. The women's is a high rise leotard that I can't imagine any woman being able to wear without her labia hanging out, let alone perform an Olympic sport in.

AIBU to think these uniforms are sexist and degrading to women?

Ahh okay I get you.
Sorry I get so riled up about this stuff, and sex work makes me feel sick so it's the dirty men I'm aiming my ire at 😫

The question is, why have they chosen that version as their publicity shot? The sprinter I posted earlier is very obviously wearing a far more practical outfit.

could it be that they are simply after publicity? I mean' everyone is talking about them - no one would have mentioned the other outfit.

i genuinely can't imagine anyone is going to pick that outfit over the one the sprinter is wearing.

Can you imagine the sand from the long jump pit???

I'd imagine because it is the most demonstrably different from the men's kit, so makes the more visually interesting shot.

Lauren Fleshman, who is a US distance runner has said:

"Professional athletes should be able to compete without dedicating brain space to constant pube vigilance or the mental gymnastics of having every vulnerable piece of your body on display. Women’s kits should be in service to performance, mentally and physically. If this outfit was truly beneficial to physical performance, men would wear it,”

"This is not an elite athletic kit for track and field. This is a costume born of patriarchal forces that are no longer welcome or needed to get eyes on women’s sports.”

Spot on!

Here’s the one that I don’t get, why do our female Divers wear a swimming costume that goes up the crack of thier arse ? The men seem to manage to dive with a large percentage of their arse cheeks covered, why not the women ?

My children do diving classes, we were there at the start of a junior competition the other day and the girls suits are indecent.

Yes, don’t get why male gymnasts get to wear unitards or shorts and vest while women have to wear leotards without knickers or tights. It’s gross.

as a point of interest women in artistic gymnastics do not have to wear what most consider a traditional gymnastics leotard (long sleeves and no legs) for competition. They can choose to wear a shorts unitard or long legged unitard. The German women, as a more mature team, have taken it upon themselves in recent years to complete in this themselves to be a visible demonstration of what the options are to inspire and empower younger women in the sport to do the same. Women can also choose a sleeveless option if their arms feel more free that way.

Regarding actual shorts - similar to what the men wear - New Zealand gymnastics only last week have changed the rules to allow women to wear these over a leotard in their national competitions. So hopefully we will see more nations do this and then on see this change on International level.

What does the skimpiest men's option look like? Can we all expect to see some balls this Olympics?

Diving probably has the highest chance if that's what you're into. The most uncovered profession athletes I've seen in any sport and I don't have full confidence the shorts will survive the impact with the water.

Lavenderandbrown · 13/04/2024 16:28

@ErrolTheDragon I haven’t looked at the entire collection but young men do seem to like the color lavender based on my 22y.o son/his friends/ instagram/ athletes on telly. And I do agree it could be lavender in any style of uniform not just a skimpy womens uniform. I do think lavender is not sex specific.

Ignore that link, it doesn't work. It's to an article in yesterday's Guardian about these kits.

Nike used advanced body scanning and motion capturing to design the most precise uniforms that will fit both men's and women's athletes

🤔

Oh so NOW they know what women are…

And judging by how many men tune into female sports just to perv on them feels like it's just trying to appeal to them. 🤢

Unfortunately you now have mediocre gymnasts who couldn’t last in elite gymnastics (LIVY DUNNE ::cough cough::) “returning” to college gymnastics teams. Which is of course, retirement from the sport, as the skills required from college gymnastics aren’t even comparable to elite.

Not sure if this happens as often in the UK, but a good analogy would be a Premier League footballer leaving for the MLS, lol (like when David Beckham left ManUnited for Real Madrid, then for L.A. Galaxy in the mid-2000s).

She’s capitalising off the fact that she’s a pretty blond but little else. It’s actually shocking how many perverted male “fans” she has - of all ages of course - who come to these meets now. The cameras will actually start the beginning of the competition (one where Olivia isn’t even competing) with close-up shots of her taking off her warm up clothes and zooming in on her crotch or her butt when her leo rides up. Her socials all have pics of her in super skimpy clothes or bikinis, pouting, or being “relatable” by showing her faceplanting after a routine during training (yes, how adorable your screwups are, while any other gymnast that highlighted this would be taken off the team immediately).

Shock of all shocks, she decided to “stay on” with LSU for another year. lol. She makes millions off sponsorship deals - not because she’s a top gymnast. She’s not even close to the best gymnast on their team, yet many in college gymnastics are acting as though it’s a “good thing” that she’s bringing nationwide (global?) attention to a very neglected but difficult women’s sport.

I don’t see how it’s a good thing that young men (and men old enough to be her father!) are showing up at these meets just to sexualise the young women, but sure, okay. I can’t imagine how happy the rest of the team will be when she finally leaves. I feel awful for the teammates who train harder and perform much better, yet are completely ignored in favor of a cute blond girl who honestly looks like a million other cute blondes out there.

The only difference is, is that she has some skill. Hence why she never wants to leave the team: there’s nowhere but down to go for her after this, someone who has been using her looks to advance a decent (at best) gymnastics career. And God forbid anyone try to mention her forgettable performances on any of her socials, especially if you’re female: you’ll immediately have an entire army of male fans accusing you of “jealousy.”

At least I think elite gymnastics is safe from the likes of opportunistic and narcissistic young women like herself. Not sure what will happen to gymnastics on the college level and if this trend will continue, but I hope to God it doesn’t.

Disturbia81 · 29/07/2024 16:28

@Katia93 Great post, and it's gross isn't it. These men are dogs, unevolved. I see it all the time on female singers, band members facebook pages.. they are mostly full of old men commenting, rather than young fans. The women sadly realise this is the way to getting in the charts and start sexualising their photos and posts.
