To think these Olympics uniforms are sexist and degrading?

Nike has revealed the US team's uniforms for their athletes. The men's one is knee length shorts and a vest. The women's is a high rise leotard that I can't imagine any woman being able to wear without her labia hanging out, let alone perform an Olympic sport in.

AIBU to think these uniforms are sexist and degrading to women?

Why is the woman’s mainly pink? 🙄

The one in the picture is plainly fucking ridiculous.

there are other, more sensible (less sexist!) options though.

I like this, but not the swimming costume as track wear. Swimming costume as swimming costume, fine. Can you imagine the starting block shot? That is grotesque if they're forced into it, which I believe they won't be. Hope not.

I'm confused at the colour. Why lilac/pink? Why not red and blue like the fellas? Where is the pink on the 🇺🇸?

Here's a zoomed in picture of the crotch area. Even the mannequin's plastic labia are hanging out. Imagine that on a real woman whose body is moving and twisting!

Edited

Are they hoping they get extra PR because there is a "labia slip" or two.

Just appalling.

SabrinaThwaite · 13/04/2024 08:57

The Insta comments are good:

Under Armour ‘we’re just here for the comments’ and Oiselle ‘when you run out of fabric after designing the men’s kit’.

I have a similar lack of desire to see flaps and yet it seems here we are.

Oh, I agree!
We need one thing or the other. Full Victorian bloomers or naked. Both sexes.

HappyGoLuckyLuLu · 13/04/2024 08:57

It is feckin' ridiculous 🙄 but your comment that even the mannequins plastic labia are hanging out had me loling on the train station like a loon 🤣

Yes - that is very weird. Last time I looked at the American flag it was red, white and blue.

Women’s outdoor clothes are often like this too.

Why an adult woman need a pink trim on her hiking boots, or a lilac pair of ski boots…

SoupDragon · 13/04/2024 08:59

Nike used advanced body scanning and motion capturing to design the most precise uniforms that will fit both men's and women's athletes

🤔

Disturbia81 · 13/04/2024 09:00

And judging by how many men tune into female sports just to perv on them feels like it's just trying to appeal to them. 🤢

Oh, bloody grim. I hadn’t even considered that angle.

Agree OP and I'm particularly enjoying Martina Navratilova's burn on X this morning Grin

This is a constant gripe for me! I never, ever shut up about it when shopping for kit.
Feck off with the pastel themed trim on every single bit of women's kit, and it seems to be on absolutely everything!
Primary or strong colours would be nice for a change, and with the same level of adult practicality and style as the men's, just in a women's cut.

And as for that olympic leotard joke costume, words fail me!

@ChalkWitch Young women too, very close to revealing their bits. Awful

Packingcubesqueen · 13/04/2024 09:10

My daughter quit competitive gymnastics in part because of the leotards. They were allowed to wear shorts to compete if they were on their period but then they stand out and it’s obvious to everyone that they are on.
I always thought the Olympic gymnastics outfits infantilised them and sexualised them at the same time, which is very disturbing. The insane physicality and brutal training regime of someone like Simone Biles, then they stick her in a hair bow and cover her in glitter. Seems a bit off to me.

Zonder · 13/04/2024 09:14

Sealtheenvelope · 13/04/2024 08:55

It's Nike. The company who think female athletes have a penis - which let's face it, would probably fit a sight better in the crotch of that leotard than female anatomy would.

This is another example of their misogyny (it's a long list).

Just what I was thinking. They don't seem to be very good at getting it right for women. Remember who was the face of Nike women in their ads this time last year?

CarefulWithThat · 13/04/2024 09:16

I hope they all refuse to wear it

sleepyscientist · 13/04/2024 09:18

I'm very much if you have got it flaunt it, but that looks like a beach swimsuit (on trend with the high cut) it doesn't look comfortable for competitive sport.

Sweetwatertaste · 13/04/2024 09:19

Oh wow that’s awful! Are they TRYING to put more women off competing or what? Who wants to wear that ffs?

ChalkWitch · 13/04/2024 09:20

Disturbia81 · 13/04/2024 09:08

I can only conclude that Nike have a bunch of perverts working in their design department if this is their output.

Basilthymerosemary · 13/04/2024 09:22

While I agree most of us in real life wouldn't choose to wear this, some athletes may. And it isn't the only option for the women. They do get to choose what they would like to wear. And hey- pink isn't awful and they probably had a team who asked random public for feedback. I like pink, many women like pink. We don't all have to like it, but we also don't have to dislike like it just because it's pink and a stereotype.

From Katie moon, Olympic champion, 2x world champion etc.

theduchessofspork · 13/04/2024 09:23

Insane

I thought the move was towards women’s sports clothing being less exposed, not more.

Anyway it looks impossible to wear - can you imagine hurdling in it?! Actually don’t..

So I think they’ll end up releasing something else

EDIT - oh I see, it’s part of a range of stuff. It’s still cracked but I imagine it’s just part of Nike wanted to sell the knock off ranges

SoupDragon · 13/04/2024 09:23

The question is, why have they chosen that version as their publicity shot? The sprinter I posted earlier is very obviously wearing a far more practical outfit.

could it be that they are simply after publicity? I mean' everyone is talking about them - no one would have mentioned the other outfit.

i genuinely can't imagine anyone is going to pick that outfit over the one the sprinter is wearing.

Can you imagine the sand from the long jump pit???
