Neighbours parking over my drive.

We've recently moved and are currently renovating our house (not fun😂) we're 1 of only 2 houses on the street that has a driveway, which is also one if the reasons we chose the house. The issue is the neighbours keep parking across my driveway (the same car has now been parked there for 3 full days without moving) which has a dropped kerb and white line, BUT there is currently a skip on the drive so obviously not being used for my car right now. With the skip on the drive I'd like to be able to use the space outside for my car, I'd never dream of parking over someone's drive whether it was used or not but as its multiple neighbours am I being unreasonable to think its rude or is it free game whilst the skips there?

It’s compulsory for parking threads to have a diagram. 😁

PickledPurplePickle · 12/04/2024 17:57

If there is a dropped kerb and a white line, nobody should be parking on it, including you

wplaf · 12/04/2024 17:57

Very rude of neighbours - what if the skip needs emptying

Fidgety31 · 12/04/2024 17:59

I had similar when I moved . I think the neighbours had got too used to the house being vacant . I put a few politely worded notes on the offending cars asking them not to block my garage and they have mostly now stopped .
i also put a Ring doorbell spotlight camera out there so I can set off the floodlight or siren if I really want to gets someone’s attention when blocking my drive ! (Haven’t used it yet )

Londonrach1 · 12/04/2024 18:02

If dropped curve you can't park across it op! Neither should your neighbour but you cant

PorkChopJohnson · 12/04/2024 18:12

That's stupid of them in many ways, but mostly because although the skip company could probably oooph a full skip over a car, the owner of the car probably wouldn't want them to.

Crumpleton · 12/04/2024 18:21

A friend had people blocking her driveway morning and evening as she lived near a school, they were only ever going to be a few minutes but never were.
They paid for a line to be added, still didnt stop people.

Her and her DH were so fed up with it being as they both had vehicles neither could access the drive to park.

One day they both arrived home together, DH parked tight in front said car then parked his DW's car so close to the back a can opener would have been needed to get it out.

Car owner did knock the door but friends DH was in the shower and she wasn't insured to drive his work van so refused to do so, they had to wait, not very happily either.

Fiends DH was off out for the evening and friend had cooked dinner for them, to add insult to injury they sat down and ate it before finally moving their vehicles.

Not sure I'd have done that but it got the point across.

Jeannie88 · 12/04/2024 18:21

Very rude, how can the skip collectors get access? Some people really don't care or have manners. Xx

It depends. In lots of areas the white line means parking restrictions rather than no parking, e.g. an area I work in you cannot park between 8am and 6pm (Mon-Fri) on certain stretches of road. Residents with a driveway and a second car have to move their car before 8am.

@Wineandpasta Do you have any idea who the car belongs to? If you do, then I'd have a polite word with them - perhaps knock on a couple of doors to ask?

They should not be blocking your dropped kerb.

HesterPrincess · 12/04/2024 18:22

Leave a note on it saying the skip is due for collection and if it isn't moved it may get damaged.

Moveoverdarlin · 12/04/2024 18:26

Hi Jane, the skip people are due to empty the skip this week, not sure what day. Can you move your car please?

*Then park in it yourself.

Wineandpasta · 12/04/2024 18:35

No idea who's car it is at the moment, hoping I'll see them leaving so I can ask politely that they don't park there, also thinking maybe some of those no parking signs might work 🤞

That's so funny! I'd never have the guts to do anything like that but still brilliant 😂

Really? Why? The previous owners had the dropped kerb and white lines put there for the drive so it's not for any other reason, surely I can block my own drive? x

To be honest I wouldn’t make a fuss while the skip is there. Neither of you should be parking there.

GreatGateauxsby · 12/04/2024 18:45

We have people park partially across our drive and it gets reported EVERY time. Even if we arent going out.

My dh has the council parking saved as a favorite contact and sends me pics of the cars getting ticketed. They are insanely fast once it was under 10mins between the call and the ticket being issued.

Its his biggest beige flag but i am now at the point i kinda love it 😅

He also is sad it happens wayyyy less frequently now
... which was the whole point of reporting it 🤦‍♀️

Don't need one in this case, it's illegal to block a drive and park over a white line.
Tell them OP or put a note on their car
They shouldn't be there.
So many assholes around.
Our drive gets blocked, we have a dropped kerb as well and signs and people still do it. Utterly selfish, they need to refresh their highway code.

PlipPlopChoo · 12/04/2024 19:01

Get two cars parked in front and behind then go out.

Twats do not pay attention to nicey nicey. They need to be inconvenienced.

Or get the council to give it a ticket.

Where do you find the number to call?

I think me and your husband would really get on.

Mumofoneandone · 12/04/2024 19:24

Do a quick Google search but looks like blocking your driveway isn't on. Can try the note on windscreen but also report to council or get the vehicle towed.

Darkedonlinen · 12/04/2024 19:29

DH and I are in this situation exactly! Our skip was full and when the company came to collect it they couldn’t because of neighbours car and fined us £100 because of it. We sent the fine to the neighbours and they haven’t done it again 😬 can you just tell the neighbour the skip is being collected and remind them you still need access?

Crumpetsssss · 12/04/2024 19:56

In my extensive knowledge of Driveway Law (gleaned solely from Mumsnet), I believe it is illegal to block someone from getting off their drive, but not from getting onto it. Because your car is not on your drive, I don’t think they’re breaking the law.

Your argument that you should be able to park there, but not anyone else, also seems flawed. To quote Official Parking Rules, you own the driveway, not the road.

I’d leave it for now, but argue it if they block it once it’s being used for a car.

No people don't even care about signs either.

Alot of people don't even look round when they get out the car.
