To not be able to run…

ManchesterBeatrice · 12/04/2024 07:31

I'll pre-face this by saying that I have tried the couch to 5K, but that didn't work out for me.

I have full gym membership, and access to treadmills, there are plenty available.

But I just can't run!

It's almost like I feel extremely heavy when I try, I weigh 9 stone, So not carrying lots of extra weight, but I just can't get the breath right.

What am I missing? Is there some kind of secret Runner's trick! I just can't seem to run, and I'd really love to be able to, as it's such a great way to lose weight, and keep weight off Physically when I don't have access to the gym.

Can anyone share their success stories of learning to successfully run on the treadmill, and then being able to take that outside to running outdoors.

When people say go slower, how? I physically can't jog any slower. I'd be doing some weird slow motion action.

If you're already going that slowly you're probably doing just fine! I found I was going too fast and therefore getting out of breath and struggled to regulate my breathing. Its a conscious thing that I'm telling myself to slow down and keep my pace steady! But it works, I ran all the way again this morning!

IjustbelieveinMe · 25/04/2024 02:21

This slow jogging is exactly what I watched when I first started running lol! because I only breathe in and out of my nose, this combined with the slow jog is what has enabled me to run around the park for the last 4 years. I don't check my personal best or anything like that. The whole point of running for me is to clear my head and feel accomplished for being able to run around the park without stopping in the first place haha!

wandawaves · 25/04/2024 03:30

My first jogging interval last night was 15 minutes! The longest I've ever done in my life. I actually felt (breathing wise) like I could go longer, but again, my heartrate was high, so I stopped.
I hope everyone else is doing well!

prettygreenteacup · 25/04/2024 07:25

Tomorrow morning again for me. Although when will the perpetual aching legs lessen 😆 3 weeks in and aching around my hips mostly!

Maybe this will make you feel better about walking @ManchesterBeatrice

Misogynist rubbish. Women’s faces don’t exist for men’s approval.

1.5 hours is not a ' long walk' DH (78 next week) regularly walks 20 miles at a go.

@AllPrincessAnneshorses

It's great your DH is able to walk so far, especially at his age

But.... you had a choice to (a) be supportive and encouraging to @Lentilweaver who felt that, for her, 1.5 hours was a long walk, or (b) put her down. You chose poorly

Run walk as others have said. When i you'll tun, run really slow, as in zone 2 if you have a heart rate monitor.

Really, really slow. There's a book called 80/20 that says 80% of training should be in the zone 2. It feels odd but works. Ignore anybody running faster, they're doing their own thing. 😊

Have you got the right trainers? Are you stretching after?Mine rarely ache after a run, although my longest is about 12-13k. I know I should run further, but I either get bored or think about what I should be doing instead.

How high did it go? Mine usually peaks around 185 (which makes dh think I'm going to die, exec though it returns to normal quickly). Got up to 200 after covid.

Doing my next run tomorrow, congratulations to everybody else who is running! This has been such a good thread for advice so far, thanks to all the commenters who've given such sage advice.

I was unaware that sharing the results of frequent bouncing on facial muscles was misogynistic. I am a female. It’s something I personally value for myself, not to appeal to any bloke. As for running, it also increases your risk of injury to feet, ankles and knees exponentially as well. I am absolutely convinced that physical strength and fitness is crucial for maintaining a happy, healthy life into old-age, and there are so many ways to work on this other than running.

Well as per google, my max for my age is 180. It hits that pretty quickly, and due to strong family of heart attacks, it makes me a little paranoid!

Tonight's jog was pretty good though- 20 minutes before hitting the 180, then walked for 5, then managed another 20 minutes! Although looking at the stats afterward, my heart rate was in the 'extreme' zone for most of the jogging, about 170bpm. So not sure if that's good or a bit risky??

GogAndMagog · 29/04/2024 17:17

@wandawaves I think you need to slow right down. The idea is that bt running slower you train your heart so that eventually you can run faster without exerting your heart to that extent.

I also lurked on this thread when it started and I was so motivated by it I strapped on my trainers today and went for a run over lunch, for the first time since before I got pregnant (and my DS turned 2 last week!)

I historically have detested running, but I think I was trying to go too fast. I slowed right down and had walk breaks any time my lungs felt like they were trying to escape my body and overall I didn't hate it! Managed 4.3km in 31 mins so not the fastest but I'm going to go again on Wednesday and hopefully plug away at it and get better.

Does anyone have any good tips or tricks for doms? I stretched afterwards, but my right calf muscle is feeling tight already. I do have an injury to my lower back on the right side which I'm convinced has something to do with it, as why wouldn't the left calf be tight as well?!

Love this! Congrats 🥰

Rolling a tennis ball into it? I have a spiky ball, which I hate, but it does the trick. Sometimes I sit on the floor and kind of lean onto the ball.
Any leg/ knee issues I have tend to be on my right. Ankle issues on my left. Dh gets horribly tight calves, but I'm not rolling them for him.

I already have! I couldn't actually run any slower.

Octomingo · 04/05/2024 12:11

Well I was rubbish today. Didn't even manage 5k and kept stopping. I gave blood on Thursday and have been hit by hayfever this week, so probably shouldn't have even bothered, but I thought a 5k, with a slight downhill to finish might be alright. I was wrong. Saw lots of bluebells though.

LoobyDop · 04/05/2024 12:15

I usually find that bad days are followed by good ones, though- console yourself with the thought that you worked hard and it will pay off one day, even if not today.

Octomingo · 04/05/2024 12:18

Yeah, reckon I was due a bad one. Have had too many good ones recently! At least no one had to rescue me, which is always my fear when I'm in the woods!

wandawaves · 06/05/2024 09:55

How is everyone going?
I haven't been out for various reasons but just went out tonight and jogged for 40 minutes without stopping! That is the longest I have ever run in my life. Then I was so exhausted I just walked home, I didn't bother with trying another interval. 😆
