What to eat instead of pasta

I don’t know if it’s becoming older but I seem to feel rubbish after eating pasta. It’s so easy though just to whip up some pasta, add some veg / sauce after a long day but I don’t want to eat it if it’s making me feel rubbish… what could I swap it for instead?

You really ARE.

May I pm you about something separate?

hulahooper2 · 11/04/2024 22:44

Try gluten free pasta

inabubble3 · 11/04/2024 22:45

Gnocchi? Unless this would also make you feel like shit. Could it be gluten in which case gluten free pasta? X

Ioverslept · 11/04/2024 22:47

Rice, quinoa, pearl barley, cous-cous

I’m gluten free and both Sainsbury’s and Aldi do lovely vegetable pasta - I usually mix a red, green and yellow for our meals
I also love rice noodles especially the bigger flat ones for things like pad Thai

My son whose a "My body is a temple" gym bunny and cyclist. Said mum try gluten free pasta.

So I did what a difference. He also got me onto lactose free milk.

These middle aged intolerance foods are tiresome. I'm also caffeine free now.

Another vote for gnocchi especially tossed in oil and roasted. Or instead of pasta in a . Bake

Whatwouldnanado · 11/04/2024 22:51

Lots of evidence to suggest wheat/gluten affects mood as well as causing physical issues.

Jacket spuds, lentil pasta, brown rice work for me. I eat wheat once a day max.

AmaryllisChorus · 11/04/2024 22:53

Brown, white, wild or red rice
Potatoes: cut into chunky chip-sized pieces with skin on. Toss in a small amount of oil with garlic granules, sea salt and either rosemary or mild chilli flakes, and roast in oven for 35 mins. Healthy oven chips. Or mash, baked potatoes, steamed new potatoes, baby potatoes roasted with chicken and veg.
Gluten free pasta or rice or lentil pasta are worth a try.
Gnocchi - made from potato but like pasta, they work with several sauces
Buckwheat pancakes - delicious for savoury dishes and gluten free

justasking111 · 11/04/2024 22:58

Gnocchi usually has wheat in it, as a binding agent.

Thank you everyone - it’s white pasta which I know is the worst! Did anyone else find certain food didn’t suit them as they got older? (I’m only early 40s!!)

Cant stomach white bread or pasta now. Started getting issues with bloating from my 40's, now I can be doubled over with the wind

I can cope with wholemeal pasta and bread and if I want a real hug in a bowl - Gnocchi. Im actually preferring it to pasta now

Glass noodles ( rice noodles ) are also a go to

Bigstuffypillow · 11/04/2024 22:59

Just have a nice steak with an egg on top, take minutes and so good for you.

justasking111 · 11/04/2024 23:01

I bought some heavily seeded brown bread last week. Had a BLT sandwich for lunch. Two hours later I had a very upset stomach. That's another one off the Eat Me list 😭

Are you a veggie? Have a plate of mixed veg, green beans, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, grilled haloumi etc. if not a veggie add a bit of quick cook protein, IE chop, chicken piece, sliced cold meat from the deli counter.

There is also a non-pasta pasta available, made from peas, can't remember the name, I found it in a health food shop.

mondaytosunday · 11/04/2024 23:07

Second rice.

ohdofukoff · 11/04/2024 23:11

Try Butter Beans from the Bold Bean Company.. they are delicious.
I literally eat them out of the jar but you could just stir in whatever sauce you use instead.

BIWI · 11/04/2024 23:41

Of course @RockyRogue1001

MoonCircles · 11/04/2024 23:45

I mostly eat low carb and there’s some great alternatives out there. Brown rice pasta is good, or edamame bean pasta. Not quite the dopamine hit of regular pasta but definitely good alternatives that don’t leave you feeling shite afterwards. Have a look in your local health food shop.

I have not eaten any grains for over five years. To be clear I mean no wheat, no rye, no rice. And yeah I have managed to feed myself perfectly well for all these years.

A few months ago I also stopped eating potatoes, all forms of sugar, all fruit, fruit juice, and artificial sweeteners.

There are still plenty of things that I can eat. I now eat the way humans were evolved to eat. I live on meat, fish, seafood, eggs, and vegetables either hot or cold, and some dairy products, mainly butter cream and cheese.

DiamondSS · 11/04/2024 23:54

It’s not the same but I made a Mediterranean vegetable tart (it’s a kids recipe on starting solids with Sunnie instagram but so good), so pastry is the alternative. There’s a lot of recipes with pastry you can make in advance to keep in the freezer and cook from frozen.

Maybe stuffed pasta as you seem to eat less of the actual pasta that way. Probably portion control too.. is it not meant to only be about a fist sized amount?

Something I’ve decided to get into since reading that it’s a lot less processed is sourdough bread. I got some tomato sourdough tonight (it had a way better description than just tomato) and keep thinking about it with soup for lunch tomorrow - wish I had the time to make my own.

Chilli and rice with pitta bread is another go to just now. As others have said, maybe just adding more veg. Every time I make the kids macaroni now I bulk it up with broccoli and cauliflower. Would gluten free pasta maybe help? I did used to have courgetti but it was always short lived, I was never remotely full after it.

wow 😧 did you eat quite healthy before that? Did you lose much weight? I feel like it must be impossible to be fat when eating that way

I ate what the average Brit eats. Some healthy things but also cakes, biscuits, lasagne, takeaways.

(Not had a takeway or a restaurant meal for over 5yrs,)

No, not lost any weight at all, though I eat strictly keto now.

QueenBitch666 · 12/04/2024 02:50

Protein pastas are fabulous! Chickpea, lentil, beetroot etc
I buy mine from Aldi or Tesco
Cook for half the time of regular pasta
