Barking dog on holiday park

miffl · 10/04/2024 20:49

We are staying for a week in Devon and the caravan next to us goes out in the evening leaving their poor dog..it barks non stop for well over two hours each night. Without a minutes break.
We have a baby so can't go out and I'm sick of listening to it bark every evening.
I lost my temper last night as I was so tired and went to the entertainment centre and complained, not sure if they notified the owners but they came back about ten.
Now same thing again tonight.
AIBU to complain to the caravan park tomorrow? It is literally non stop the entire time they are out. The people next door to us also commented to me about it yesterday.
Would also add, we own a dog, he's a home being dog sat by my mum! I wouldn't leave him alone to bark like that for his and other peoples sanity.

Did you tell them their dog had been barking?

XenoBitch · 10/04/2024 20:50

I thought it was against the rules to leave a dog unattended in holiday accommodation. That has certainly been the case when I have gone on a break with my dog.
But then, they might actually own the caravan themselves.

GrazingSheep · 10/04/2024 20:51

Yes complain.
And keep complaining.

ZipZapZoom · 10/04/2024 20:52

Are they actually allowed to leave him unattended, surely most places stipulate they can't be left? I would be absolutely furious is there someone you can discuss it with like guest services?

miffl · 10/04/2024 20:53

@ZipZapZoom
I complained to the entertainment staff last night as reception wasn't open and we were out early today for entire day, I stupidly assumed the owners had been told yesterday and that's why they came back. Apparently not.
Non stop barking for the last hour and a quarter.
I'd feel very uncomfortable talking to them directly.

Complain at reception again. And again. Or you could leave a note on their door/car anonymously telling them their dog doesn't stop barking, if you feel they might get nasty. They may think the dog stops barking after a short while so may be unaware. You have my sympathy, we had neighbours on holiday who had outdoor barbecue parties til midnight. Thankfully they only stayed 2 nights else we'd have been complaining.

HesterPrincess · 10/04/2024 20:58

Put a note on their door saying it's too much of a noise disturbance and you're on holiday too.

Bloody cruel, poor dog must be really distressed.

I can understand why you'd feel uncomfortable confronting them but as a mum with a young baby I would have seen red and given no fucks about confronting them.

You definitely need to report it to main reception asap preferably with a recording to show just how much it has impacted your stay.

Popchippps · 10/04/2024 20:59

Is there not a number to contact for emergencies?
id be calling that to report a distressed dog then informing reception tomorrow
take a recording you can play back to them

miffl · 10/04/2024 20:59

@Popchippps
I've just taken a video and the dog barks the whooolllle time

If you don't tell them how are they supposed to know the dog has been barking?

Presumably they can hear the poor thing when they leave and as they return. Of course they will know it barks.

sleepyscientist · 10/04/2024 21:02

Totally normal on a caravan site take the baby in the pram and have fun. It may be that they are owners and trying to train the dog to be left in the caravan

WaltzingWaters · 10/04/2024 21:02

Glad you’ve taken a video. Show this to reception when they’re open and keep complaining. If there’s an emergency number for the holiday park report a dog in distress maybe.
but keep complaining until you get a result.

Leaving a dog to bark for hours alone is not training it. Confused

Dunnoburt · 10/04/2024 21:07

Omg complain complain complain..... you've paid good money for a holiday haven't you? Absolutely not your job or responsibility to confront the dog owners.

Helenloveslee4eva · 10/04/2024 21:08

What sort of dog ?

does it want to come over to mine for the evening 😆( joke )

sleepyscientist · 10/04/2024 21:09

@ZipZapZoom how do you propose you train it to be alone in a different space other than leaving it? One of ours is currently talking to me through the kitchen door she not distressed just wants to be in and I've cleaned the floor so she can wait. It's still early and I would much rather the owners got it used to being left at this time of night than during the day when people are likely to be about not at the entertainment.

Mama2many73 · 10/04/2024 21:11

Most holiday parks/lodges etc have a rule that dogs are not allowed to be left alone, sometimes they allow it with prior agreement ie 1 evening, but that doesn't allow them to disturb others on the park.
Complain again.
We take our dog on holiday. We stay in detached cottages but he is NEVER left alone.

miffl · 10/04/2024 21:13

@sleepyscientist
They can train their dog somewhere fucking else then rather than where people have paid hundreds of pounds to go on holiday and NOT listen to a dog bark continuously for hours.
As I said, we have a dog, in fact we have owned several in my lifetime and I've never left one to bark like that, it's clearly very distressed to bark WITHOUT stopping for over two hours

No animal lover would leave a dog in distress for hours at a time. Leaving an animal alone takes time and you need to build up to it. This isn't training, it's animal cruelty.

WiddlinDiddlin · 10/04/2024 21:13

Yup, no part of training to address separation anxiety/distress, should involve the dog barking/howling/crying. Look up how to systematically desensitize rather than flood and ignore your dog @sleepyscientist if your dog is barking, you're doing it wrong.

@miffl Leave a note, go back to the reception... theres not a lot else you can really do :(

By not leaving it alone for hours whilst it works itself into a frenzy. I'm genuinely surprised that's not obvious. Yes you've got to train them so they can be left but you do that in small incremental periods of time going back and rewarding them before they become hysterical barky messes. Leaving the poor pup to bark for hours doesn't teach him anything.

ZipZapZoom · 11/04/2024 09:52

Hope you managed to get some sleep and you are able to talk to guest services today to resolve the issue.

miffl · 11/04/2024 14:30

@ZipZapZoom
Yes thanks, I spoke to reception this morning and apparently a few other guest complained last night as was barking for over three hours, so it wasn't just us!
