To think keep buying books when you haven’t read the ones you’ve got is odd

Like having over 100 and keep buying how are you going to get through them

OP posts:
bridgetreilly · 09/04/2024 22:57

100 books is really hardly any at all. Books are like breathing - if you don’t keep doing it, you’ll die, I actually only have a few hundred physical books these days, because I have a very tiny house and a kindle with about 2500 on it. Oh, there’s another 1500 or so in my office at work, as well.

nimski · 09/04/2024 22:58

YABU. The End.

Youcunnyfunt · 09/04/2024 23:00

As a person who reads a lot of books, owns a lot of books, I still buy a lot of books… because I’m interested in them!
It’s like painting. You need to be in the mood (for a specific type of book). I don’t just read one book. I’ll be dipping into gardening books, art books, while reading fiction and probably some science based journalism. At the same time.

FairisleFairy · 09/04/2024 23:00

The thing is, when you go somewhere new and unexpectedly come across an independent bookshop, it’s almost criminal not to buy something, isn’t it?

I do this with audiobooks.

Don't buy them. I use a library app called Libby. You can add multiple library subscriptions and borrow audiobooks for free. It's amazing and I use it all the time now

Powderblue1 · 09/04/2024 23:05

OMG OP this isn't odd at all. My favourite aisle in the charity shop is the bookshelf!

Malarandras · 09/04/2024 23:06

I would say it would be odder to not have a constant supply of books on tap to read.

TattiePants · 09/04/2024 23:09

100 books would only last me a year so there’s nothing unusual about that. I have about 200 unread physical books and another 100 on my Kindle which I’ll get round to eventually.

Zonder · 09/04/2024 23:09

You have to keep buying books. What if one day you run out of books?

The other weird thing I've heard is why keep books when you've read them. Like you expect me to get rid of actual books I've read and enjoyed? 🙄

I bet the people who say that listen to music more than once. Reading more than once is just the same. Really great books need to be read every year, I find.

RedRosesPinkLilies · 09/04/2024 23:12

Not trying to bring the thread down - but I have cancer that will likely kill me in next few years
I still buy books - love them! My children (one son in particular) will read them.

Devilsmommy · 09/04/2024 23:16

YABVU I've read nearly 100 so far this year so if I didn't buy anymore, what would I read? 🤔 (Completely disregard the 1000 on the bookshelves) 🤭

Serenity45 · 09/04/2024 23:16

YABU I buy loads of books as they will all get read eventually. Might get the odd one as a gift too...or a kindle 99p daily deal...love a secondhand bookshop mooch! DH and I thought we'd buy less books once we got Kindles years ago. Spoiler alert we probably buy about the same.

LenaLamont · 09/04/2024 23:17

OP, there is something very wrong with you. You don't wait to run out of book before you get more. What do you read in the meantime??

I buy books when I see books that appeal to me. I will read it when I'm in the mood for that book.

Sometimes, I will read part of a book and find it's not really my thing, and put it down again. Then it joins the stack of the Did Not Finish, which goes to charity shops at intervals.

MollsDolls · 09/04/2024 23:17

Guess I'm another oddball so. 🤣🤣

Resisterance · 09/04/2024 23:17

Oh that's me you've described. Can't stop won't stop.

Nope, normal behaviour

Badabingbadabooom · 09/04/2024 23:19

I like to pick a book to match whatever specific mood I’m in. Also just the buying of the book itself is enjoyable, reading them is a bonus 😆

Catsmere · 09/04/2024 23:21

EdithGrantham · 09/04/2024 22:21

Buying books and reading books are two separate hobbies

I was just wondering if that's said of books! I'm familiar with it being applied to yarn. 😄

Strokethefurrywall · 09/04/2024 23:25

Not odd at all. My TBR pile grows all the time. I get twitchy and anxious if I've got fewer than 5 that I've not read!

NamelessNancy · 09/04/2024 23:30

Bluevelvetsofa · 09/04/2024 22:33

I buy yarn and cross stitch kits when I haven’t finished or used what I’ve got. It’s unlikely that I will ever finish what I’ve got!

Oh yes, so much yarn. No chance I'll ever get through it all but I can be sure I'll not be able to resist buying more!

bluetopazlove · 09/04/2024 23:34

Never can have too many 📚😂.

Keepstring · 09/04/2024 23:39

OP ain't coming back! She was obviously moaning about a friend or relative 😁

PaperBauble · 09/04/2024 23:42

The thought of not having the right sort of book that I might want to read at any point makes me quite anxious. A really good TBR (To Be Read) pile is essential. 100 is only, say, 10 books in 10 genres and that’s barely a capsule TBR pile really!

TulipBluebells · 09/04/2024 23:44

I don’t need to be bullied on here 😂

my excuse is that I buy second hand so I have to get any I want when I see them.
