I have flu and a work thing i can't get out of tomorrow- how do i make it through the day?

i have the flu- i have been ill since Thursday with horrible body aches that don't respond to paracetamol and lovely cough. Am alternating paracetamol with ibuprofen 2hrly to feel comfortable/ sleep and have zero appetite

FWIW i'm generally healthy- gym/ spin 5 x a week, healthy weight and had flu jab as nhs person

i have a conference tomorrow that i'm very disorganised for so can't really delegate. i'm an active participant so can't not show either , Also. i'm on temporary contract that i'd like to be made permanent so fessing up to my lack of prep is not a great plan (though the reality is other pressures are most of the reason)

so, backstory/ excuses over- please hit me with your coping-for-the-day remedies? then i will be sensible and see a GP and stay in bed etc

Flu is truly awful. If you had that you wouldn't have the strength to be on your phone/laptop, never mind contemplate going into work!

Another one spouting the same myths about flu. It’s been debunked numerous times on MN and yet people still continue to believe that flu has to be severe or it isn’t flu.

OP unless your work involves ensuring a nuclear weapon isn’t deployed, you really can have a sick day off. Please don’t go into work with flu or put your health at further risk

Aside from the fact that Ibuprofen/paracetamol shouldn't be alternated two hourly, it doesn't matter whether it's mild flu or a bad cold or jungle fever. They're all viruses, forget for a minute that the pandemic didn't happen and we had to think for ourselves when we weren't well, and do that. If you're too sick to go, you won't be able to do so. If you're well enough and you can't steer clear, then there's your answer. No diagram needed.

True. She's clearly got a nasty virus, which shouldn't be spread.

I (along with other MNers) just find the constant repetition of "I had flu once and was completely incapacitated therefore if you are not incapacitated it isn't flu" an offence against logic too annoying to ignore.

It's like saying "my aunty died of Covid-19 so you can't have had Covid-19 if you're still alive" or "my dog's black so if your pet is brown it must be a cat".

ShowOfHands · 10/04/2024 12:11

My Grandma died from the common cold. I'm going to start posting that people on here claiming to have a cold are clearly lying as they're alive.

ShowOfHands · 10/04/2024 12:12

Oh and DH's chicken pox turned into meningitis and hospitalisation so clearly you only have varicella if you're in HDU.

And I walked out into traffic today and didn't die so fuck the Green Cross Code.

MrsSlocombesCat · 10/04/2024 12:15

What you have is a bad cold. If you had flu you wouldn’t be able to get out of bed. I wouldn’t go to work, especially if there’s a presentation. Protect others, don’t spread it.

Damnyourheadshoulderskneesandtoes · 10/04/2024 12:16

Hope you got through your meeting ok OP. lol at the flu gatekeepers here.

FFS. Will someone, anyone please read the fucking thread!

peloton2024 · 10/04/2024 12:17

I've had mild flu and really bad flu
For me it's going from fine to not well suddenly, a temperature and even the duvet hurts my legs

Having a cough is really not socially acceptable any more. At the very least you need to wear a mask.

Really? I cough because of hay fever, I'm not wearing a mask from March to October! If I'm not 'socially acceptable' then tough.

ShowOfHands · 10/04/2024 12:23

OP, whatever you do, just cancel the cheque first.

Yes! I'm so fed up with all these overdramatic posters claiming that their grumpy spotty children who aren't even in bed, let alone ICU, have chickenpox. Don't they know that it's actually sometimes really serious?

StinkyWizzleteets · 10/04/2024 12:33

OP should just stay TF at home if sick. Don’t spread whatever it is you happen to have right now. If it’s making you feel awful then it will make clinically vulnerable people even more ill. Have compassion and just get better in time. There will be other opportunities and you won be labelled a selfish superspreader next time.

What a load of arrant nonsense.

I think you're right. I believe the NHS has now largely abandoned that diagnosis chart and replaced it with this time-honoured one.

wishIwasonholiday10 · 10/04/2024 12:33

Please don’t go. If the virus (whether or not it’s flu) you have is as nasty as you say it’s really inconsiderate to infect others with it. Conferences are a perfect environment for respiratory viruses to spread and your going may at best result in lots of other people having to take time off work ill or at worst make someone seriously ill.

That's an entire medical degree right there.

It's really not fair to make exposure to the flu an unavoidable part of an event for everyone else there.

OK, there may be people who unknowingly are infectious (because their symptoms have not yet begun but their viral load is climbing) but that's really not a good reason to knowingly mix with a large and disparate group of people when you know that you are.

If you are cool with the idea of infecting other people (some of whom may have underlying medical conditions, or a household member being treated for cancer, or a very elderly relative they visit) then nothing we say will stop you.

But please wear a mask, do not mingle, open windows, stay the minimum time, and warn people so that if they need to avoid illness (could be as simple as being unable to afford to be on sick leave - flu can last 2-3 weeks even for those in normal health) they can leave and not share air with you.

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 10/04/2024 13:58

I had flu about two months ago - and I'm pretty sure it was flu, started abruptly, fever, aching all over, chest felt awful. But DH also had flu (and has an underlying condition - ended up calling 999), and DS had it (ASD, absolutely refused the nasal flu vaccine, first time having flu, very distressed, upset about DH being so ill). I couldn't spend three days in bed like I did the last time I had the flu, around seven years ago. It was horrible, difficult, and I still don't feel 100% recovered now.

rupsky · 10/04/2024 14:22

I feel like you want advice on how to get through this rather than suggestions saying don't go... so here goes.

Packet of Solpadine Max from pharmacy. Take 2 every 4 hours. The codine will give you a lift

A bottle of lucozade energy. The red fizzy one

A bottle of lucozade sport (for electrolytes)

Good luck! x x x

rupsky · 10/04/2024 14:23

I just realised you posted this yesterday. Hope you're coping!

Yes, what the actual fuck? People with respiratory issues don't have to wear masks just because it makes some entitled twats feel more comfortable.
