Biryani has so many varieties. 'Sindhi' biryani is unthinkable without potatoes and is one of the best biryanis you would ever eat. It is very spicy and not seen very often in UK.
Traditional lucknow/ mughlai biryani is made without potatoes and is purely a meat affair!
I love both varieties.

What's wrong with carbs in carbs? It makes it tastier.
Yes you can have potato

Yes. Asma Khan put some in her Biriyani. It was delicious

There are few dishes that aren't improved by adding potatoes and / or cheese.

Agree! Perhaps the potato biriani needs to be accompanied by a cheese naan !
Not quite a biriani but I quite often have sag aloo pilau rice with a side dish size veg curry as a smaller and cheaper biriani style dish .

In restaurants it's a no no, as they always just dump half a massive unchopped potato in it, all bland in the middle. Small amounts of fried potato are fine though.

I've not seen one with them in, but I would welcome potatoes in anything! I tend to order/ attempt to cook a veg curry or 2 alongside it that had potatoes. As long as they're not too hard or too squashy, I think it's a good plan?

Typical UK Indian restaurant biryani doesn't include potatoes, but I've had regional variants which included potatoes and were absolutely delicious. Sindhi biryani (from Sindh province in Pakistan) is really tasty and typically includes potatoes, with dried plums in the mix giving an unexpected sweet hit that I really like. See e.g. Sindhi Lamb Biryani - Fatima Cooks
