Yes or no?

YABU = yes to potatoes

YANBU = no to potatoes

Yikes. There's a bit more to making a biriyani than that.

Of course there is!

mynameiscalypso · 09/04/2024 18:39

I'm always wary about potatoes in these kind of dishes in case they are undercooked (see also: sweet potato in a chilli). But if it's been cooked for long enough and the potatoes have soaked up a lot of delicious juices, I think I would be in favour.

LMMuffet · 09/04/2024 18:40

Whether the answer is yes or no depends wholly on which regional biryani is being made because the spices and cooking method differs for each. So YABU to suggest there is a straightforward yes or no answer to this question!

LunaNorth · 09/04/2024 18:45

Yep. Also love cauli in it.

Simonjt · 09/04/2024 18:46

Nope, no self respecting asian would ever put potato in.

Although I am shocked no one has lost their shit about double carbs 🤣

A very good point! Maybe we should just embrace our carb based diversity!

I did a cooking course in Rajasthan and they put potatoes in the biriyani. I don’t tend to though.

Approx 15 million people in Kolkata (and many more in the surrounding areas) would like to have a word with you…

ImWearingPantaloons · 09/04/2024 19:11

Yes, in the veg curry sauce

Olinguita · 09/04/2024 20:29

Any South Asian mumsnet-ers please correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard it's traditional in Bengali cooking to have potato in a biryani. The odd aloo is always a welcome addition to a biryani as far as I'm concerned.
(DH is Indian but not from that region, but we have Bengali friends)

LMMuffet · 09/04/2024 20:36

Yes @Olinguita that’s correct. And it’s delicious! And used in some other regions too. But I wouldn’t want potatoes in a Hydrabadi biryani for example. It’s so specific to the flavouring and cooking method.

25milesfromhome · 10/04/2024 13:59

I carried out an incredibly objective survey and 100% of the respondents (me) were overwhelmingly in favour of potato inclusion.

I had the privilege of eating biryani at Darjeeling Express in London some years ago and it contained potatoes, and was one of the best meals I've ever eaten. It looks like a really really difficult dish to make and I have so much respect for anyone who makes it at home!
Eating an actual Hyderabadi biryani in Hyderabad is on my bucket list!

FrenchandSaunders · 10/04/2024 14:45

Yes I sometimes put potatoes in mine.
I make it with lamb mince, peas, onions, spices, bit of curry paste, add rice.
Then (wait for the pearl clutching 😁), I open a TIN of potatoes and chop them in half, then fry them in delicious indian spices before adding to the biriani.
Yes it is a double carb dish but it goes a lot further ... lovely leftovers for lunch.

toomuchlikemyusername · 10/04/2024 14:48

Yes if they are in the curry sauce.
Extra points for a hard boiled egg in the rice too.
Whole cardamom pods can stay well away though.

doubleshotcappuccino · 10/04/2024 14:49

Carb in the carb .. isn't that the same as aloo paratha .. but weirdly I'm going to say no in a biryani but yes in a paratha ..

strawberryblue · 10/04/2024 14:50

Indian 🇮🇳 and yes potatoes in biryani x

South African Indians (who have been in SA from 1820) would disagree.

Other types of biryani... including shockingly tinned fish biryani! Which is so good 😋

I often have vegetable biriani at Indian / Bangladeshi restaurants and that always has potato in either the rice . I love potato and would fee short-changed if it didn't have it .

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 10/04/2024 19:26

conniecon · 09/04/2024 18:13

No as rice and potatoes is too carb heavy!

🙄

MsLuxLisbon · 10/04/2024 19:30

Absolutely no. I'm a carb fiend but potatoes do not belong in a biryani.

SophiaElise · 10/04/2024 19:31

As a side dish with other vegetables - yes

Mixed in with the rice - no

newwings · 10/04/2024 19:31

Absolutely and peas

AhBiscuits · 10/04/2024 19:34

There are few dishes that aren't improved by adding potatoes and / or cheese.
